Friday, June 20, 2008

The Ocean Surface Topography Mission (OSTM), or Jason-2, satellite, has been launched into low Earth orbit. A Delta II rocket carrying the satellite lifted off from Space Launch Complex 2W at the Vandenberg Air Force Base in California, United States, at 07:46 GMT this morning. Spacecraft separation occurred around an hour later, and the solar panels on the satellite have deployed.

OSTM is a collaboration between the American space agency, NASA, and the French space agency, CNES. It will study and map the surface of the oceans from space. The Delta II rocket flew in the 7320 configuration, the lowest capacity variant, with three solid rocket motors, and no third stage. The exact launch time was 07:46:25.192 GMT.

This is the third launch of a Delta II carrier rocket to be conducted so far this year, and the 137th overall. The next Delta II is scheduled to launch in mid-late August, with the GeoEye-1 civilian imagery satellite, however A GPS satellite launch which was delayed from mid July to an unconfirmed date could potentially occur before this. This is the 32nd orbital launch of 2008.

Baseball player Manny Ramirez retires after testing positive for performance-enhancing drug

Sunday, April 10, 2011

Champion Tampa Bay Rays baseball player Manny Ramirez, 38, notified the MLB on Friday that he would retire after being notified that he had tested positive for a banned perforance-enhancing drug. It was his second offense and he was facing a 100-game suspension. In 2009 as a Los Angeles Dodger, he served a 50-game suspension for violating the MLB’s drug policy.

Ending a 19-year career, the twelve-time All-Star player who is considered one of the baseball’s greatest hitters, won two World Series championships with the Boston Red Sox.

He batted a career average of .312, and for 13 seasons he produced more than 200 RBIs. He hit a career total of 555 home runs and 1,831 RBIs, exceeding the number of home runs and RBIs of Mickey Mantle. He ranks number 14 on the all time list. Now there may be an asterisk after his record numbers.

“His numbers, he was unreal,” said Red Sox infielder Omar Vizquel, who was Ramirez’s teammate with the Cleveland Indians. “He was one of the most feared guys with runners in scoring position. … If there is a guy you really want at the plate in a tough situation, it would have been Manny.”

Ramirez’s retirement coincides with the trial of another of baseball’s great hitters, Barry Bonds, charged with falsely denying to a grand jury that he used performance-enhancing drugs.

“Until the past couple of years, I thought [Ramirez] was on his way to the Hall of Fame,” said Texas Rangers manager Ron Washington. “I don’t think many guys got as many big hits in their careers as he has. There weren’t many guys who had as big an effect on a game as he had. You hate to see greatness all of a sudden just fade.”

Lose Up To Seventy Five To Eighty Percent Of Their Body Weight With Obesity Surgery

Submitted by: Suzanna Pepper

As a result of Gastric Bypass Surgery the average patient can expect to lose up to seventy five to eighty percent of their body weight. This weight loss is very rapid in the first year which usually results in the seventy five percent weight loss initally. If a patient experiences no health complications and continues with the plan prescribed by their doctor they should have continued weight loss up to ninety percent at the five year mark depending on their presurgery weight and body type, which is a dramatic amount of weight loss.

Due to this rapid weight loss patients can often expect to experience a lessening of their health problems that were related to obesity. Studies have shown improvement of sleep apnea, asthma, joint pain, arthritis, acid reflux, shortness of breath and lowers the chances of heart disease, lowers blood pressure, and has even shown that type-two diabetics may no longer need their medication. In a study of five hundred patients, ninety six percent experienced an improvement in one or more of their health conditions.

Of course there are risks associated with obesity surgery. One in every three hundred gastric bypass patients dies post-operatively. This can often be from a variety of complications. This surgery is performed on patients with a high risk of complications from surgery, due to their obesity. The obesity surgery patient would have a higher risk of complications from any surgery compared to those healthier patients. As such it should only be done as a last resort.

After surgery you are at a higher risk of infection, (one patient took steps to prevent infection by putting up signs asking people to please wash their hands before touching him) which can set in around the staples on your stomach and on the incision where the doctor entered or you could develop blood poisoning.

KKE: Interview with the Greek Communist Party

Thursday, May 13, 2010

Wikinews reporter Iain Macdonald has performed an interview with Dr Isabella Margara, a London-based member of the Communist Party of Greece (KKE). In the interview Margara sets out the communist response to current events in Greece as well as discussing the viability of a communist economy for the nation. She also hit back at Petros Tzomakas, a member of another Greek far-left party which criticised KKE in a previous interview.

The interview comes amid tensions in cash-strapped Greece, where the government is introducing controversial austerity measures to try to ease the nation’s debt-problem. An international rescue package has been prepared by European Union member states and the International Monetary Fund – should Greece require a bailout; protests have been held against government attempts to manage the economic situation.

Thailand forces registration of prepaid phones to thwart insurgency

Tuesday, November 15, 2005

In a move aimed at hampering the near-daily bombing attacks in southern Thailand, all owners of prepaid phones are required to register by midnight local time today or face being blocked.

Originally scheduled for implementation at the end of last year, the move was deferred to allow people more time to register their phones. The policy only applies to the three southernmost provinces that border MalaysiaPattani, Narathiwat, and Yala — formerly the Malay Pattani kingdom.

Thais from other parts of the country with prepaid phones will also be required to register should they wish to visit the region. When doing so their calls will be treated as roaming, a feature of GSM which allows a user to make and receive calls on a network other than that of their service provider.

Many of the bombs used in the south are believed to be detonated by mobile phone, although most of the more than one thousand casualties in the region have been from drive-by shootings and stabbings.

It is reported that 65% of the near half-million prepaid phones in the region that this would impact have been registered. Prepaid phones are commonplace throughout Thailand and estimates put the number in use throughout the whole country at approximately ten million.

Other efforts to deal with the insurgency in the predominantly Muslim area include an announcement yesterday that approximately 20,000 local villagers will be given training and small arms to help defend their villages. Both men and women will be eligible, and those accepted into the programme will be put onto the government payroll.

A De Cluttered Student Is A Successful Student

A De-Cluttered Student is a Successful Student

by

PRIYANKA VINAYAK

Here’s How Students Can Clear Out the Clutter To Make Progress During their School Year.

Sure, a messy room is the sign of a creative mind, but how will that help when you can’t find your next masterpiece beneath all those heaps?

As a time management technique, I advise students to clear out the clutter in their rooms throughout the school year, which is always accompanied by mounds of stuff.

You’ve got to use textbooks and papers, and if you de-clutter your personal space and desk, you’ll have the room for the necessaries; but, in addition to de-cluttering, kids of all ages will get ahead of the game by using smart organizational tools to help them economize on time and stay calm when clearing out the mess.

Because of the experiences I’ve had in coaching thousands of both adults and teens about increasing productivity to achieve the goals they’ve set for learning, lifestyle, and business, I am very aware of how a study space that is organized can promote enjoyment, achievement and success.

Here are 5 Quick Tips To Clear Out the Clutter.

1. Get it Out of There. Imagine the building is on fire, and you have 60 seconds to grab whatever you can carry and make your escape. What would you grab? Consider those items your essentials and everything else potentially expendable. My advice is to toss out the clothes that don’t fit, the papers that aren’t needed, the socks that don’t match and other items from the “expendable” heaps to create more space before the school year and its demands get away from you.

2. Enlist a Cruel Friend. Breaking the “pack rat” habit can be difficult for people of any age. Your friends will not have the sentimental attachments you do to your clutter, and they will help you let go of your excess stuff that you know should be thrown away. It could be a fun game with their nudging.

3. Control Your Stuff. Control your stuff, or your stuff will control the time you spend stumbling over it. Look for bins and boxes that have lids and that are affordable. Stack them in your closed or beneath your bed or desk. You can toss all the loose stuff into those containers. Next, take ten minutes every other day to go through a box to pluck out what’s expendable. Then, toss it. It’s a smart system to cycle through the clutter and make more space inside those same containers for truly useful items.

4. Don’t Fall Into The Granny Trap. I call it the ‘granny trap,’ because kids and teenagers can also fall into the trap of keeping too many of what my grandmother called knick-knacks without real value cluttering up shelves and tabletops. Unless you’re a serious adviser, toss it. You’re young; stay portable.

5. Fake It. When you don’t have ten minutes to sort and toss your excess stuff, get it out of sight in those stackable, hide-able bins or boxes until you find ten minutes to clear out the clutter from your personal space. You could give up ten minutes of text messaging your friends, and you’ll have instant, if temporary, new floor space and stave off complaints from surprise visitors.

Spanish prime minister speaks on economic crisis

Monday, October 20, 2008

In an interview with Público, a Spanish newspaper, the prime minister of Spain, Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero, has stated that ” if there is a global recession, it seems logical to expect that Spain will enter the recession in 2009 .”

In the interview Zapatero also described the worldwide economic situation as “difficult.” He recognized that ” the developed countries are or are going to experience negative growth, and developing countries are also going to see falling growth; resulting in a worldwide loss of jobs.”

We have a year-long financial crisis, which has had its most acute moment in the past two months, and I think now the financial markets are beginning to recover

Regarding the global financial situation, Zapatero continued by saying that “the financial system is a part of the economy, a crucial part. We have a year-long financial crisis, which has had its most acute moment in the past two months, and I think now the financial markets are beginning to recover.”

Asked about whether it would be desirable to another plan to help those overwhelmed by the size of their mortgage, Zapatero reiterated the falls in the Euro Interbank Offered Rate .

Zapatero then claimed that the average Spanish citizen would see their mortgage decrease by 28 a month (€330 per year) as result of the recent drops in interest rate, lead by seven central banks, including the European Central Bank which covers Spain, dropped their interest rate by 0.5%.

The prime minister then said that he was pleased with the role of Spain in the recent summits discussing the financial crisis, before adding that he believes the European Union will lead the way in solving the current issues in the markets.
