School Uniforms Good Or Bad? Part I}

School uniforms – good or bad? Part I

by

Adam Nowak

1. Deroticed schoolgirls

As usual, people believe that squeezing children into school uniforms will prevent sexual abuse, rapes, etc. This kind of argument is similar to the one saying that “she provoked him and she is to blame”. People who share this opinion should see on the Internet how great of an erotic fetishism the school uniform is for men! All the laughter from people who hear that argument will be the best evidence that what I have just written is very true. That is why I would firmly stick to that reaction.Unless you’re going to persuade the ladies who don’t get what you’re talking about – they’ll probably stare goggle-eyed at you with astonishment. The results on the Internet should open their eyes to that problem. It’s also typical that in countries where uniforms are most popular – for example, Great Britain or Japan – they have the most erotic connotations.Evidence for that can be found in Google. If one looks for “school uniform” in Google, one will encounter pages presenting uniforms as erotic fetishism. Yet, once you insert “schoolgirl” or “school uniform” in Google, you’ll be flooded by a great number of pornography sites!!!Summing up, if anyone believes that girls in uniforms will be safer, is definitely wrong. On the contrary, this kind of clothing may just attract more deviants.2. Uniforms will prevent fashion and vanity ecstasya. Uniform requiring clothing of a specified colour and cut e.g. white blouse/shirt; navy blue sweater/cardigan, grey skirt/trousers. But the school doesn’t impose any shop or brand. The ‘fashion parade’ will stop only seemingly, because the need for individual expression cannot be suppressed by uniforms. Children and teenagers will certainly find other ways to emphasize their distinctness, and to show their alleged superiority over other children. Thus, if a school uniform consists of a navy blue sweater/cardigan/shirt and grey skirt/trousers, one child will have the most expensive, designer sweater/cardigan/shirt and designer skirt/trousers, while the other will wear old, stretched rags. Where is that equality? One cannot compare two sweaters just because they have the same colour and name. People who are still in favour of introducing school uniforms, should familiarize themselves with experiences in that field taken from other countries. In Belgium, for example, there are private schools which require uniforms and this leads to fanatic attitude on behalf of the children towards these clothes. That is because of the fact that by depriving somebody of their identity, it will turn into a complete obsession. Kids in such schools go nuts and feel excessive pressure not only to possess the best and the most fashionable clothes, but also those of the “right” brand. As I’ve written before, one grey skirt cannot be compared with another, even if its cut or length are firmly determined. Commercial companies easily make use of kids’ obsessions and compete to produce such cool stuff. It also has an appropriate price! Thus, any parent who thinks that their children’s obsession with clothes will come to an end, is mistaken. It’ll be just the opposite, because both bans and orders result in resistance. The stricter these bans and orders are, the bigger resistance and obsession among people of different ages they cause. So, not only among adults, but also among children and teenagers. The ban on wearing designer labels won’t change anything either, because producers will find the gap in the market at once. They’ll start producing clothes without any logos, but which can be immediately recognised by children as the better ones. The quality, as well as best cut are easily noticeable. Those who remember times when they wore school uniforms themselves, should be aware of the fact that they’ll not eliminate any fashion parades, competitions or condescension acts. People should remember themselves and talk about what they did when they were that age in order not to be deprived of their individuality. Uniforms didn’t change anything in the schools that I attended.b. Full uniforms – they’re bought in one shop and they are all of the same quality, have the same cut, including shoes and bags – however, they’re quite expensive.Such uniforms will be out of reach for many children. There’ll be children possessing only one such uniform. Not to mention the fact that introducing identical uniforms will cause a hellish temptation of corruption. Because, who is to decide which shop will provide children with uniforms?Imagine the hell a child will have to go through, when possessing only one uniform? His/ her uniform will be much more worn-out in comparison to other children’s uniforms. So where is this alleged equality? It’ll be also more often dirty, because it will be washed only during the weekend. And what about winter, if it doesn’t dry until Monday?Of course, we assume here that a schoolchild has responsible parents, and that they won’t forget to clean and iron the uniform. At the same time we realise that this is not always the case. There are children whose parents won’t care about their child having a clean uniform every single week. Parents don’t have time, they forget, are tired, or simply drink, etc. And then what? What should such a child wear to school? A dirty uniform? A wet uniform?Of course, one child will have a few uniforms and they’ll always be new, not worn out, neat, clean and ironed. At the same time, other pupils will wear dirty, worn-out or even ragged uniforms. They may also be too small, because there can be a case when parents don’t have enough money to buy a child a new uniform, when the old one doesn’t fit any more.We shouldn’t forget that as many as 30% of children in Poland live in poverty and don’t have anything to eat. They don’t have enough money for school equipment or books, let alone buying a new uniform. That will only be extra expense, because everyday clothing can be found in second-hands for peanuts. A uniform cannot.Apart from that, should all parents be obligated to keeping their child’s uniform clean and ironed? What if they don’t fulfill their duty? Can a child, in such a case, wear other clothes at school? Following this thought, a child who has such irresponsible parents will surely feel discriminated by other children? Finally, everybody will realise that such a child has parents who don’t take care of him/her. This is an ‘ideal’ reason to tease and persecute the child! Why should children suffer the negative consequences of being neglected?Yet another matter concerning the alleged equality of the children in uniforms. At once there’ll be established schools that are “better” and “worse”. Richer children will attend one school, and the poorer a different one. As every school will have its own uniform, it’ll be easily noticeable which school a child attends. So, there is a great probability that children outside the school ground will be treated with contempt, hate or envy.Copyright (c) 2008 Adam Nowak

Wikinews’ overview of the year 2007

Monday, December 31, 2007

What would you tell your grandchildren about 2007 if they asked you about it in, let’s say, 20 year’s time? If the answer to a quiz question was 2007, what would the question be? The year that you first signed on to Facebook? The year Britney Spears and Amy Winehouse fell apart? The year author Kurt Vonnegut or mime Marcel Marceau died, both at 84?

Let’s take a look at some of the international stories of 2007. Links to the original Wikinews articles are in bold.

Toxic Mold Testing Procedures

By Daryl Watters

During a typical mold investigation, one of the inspectors our first steps is to interview the client to determine specific details in regards to any known mold problems, any health complaints, or any known changes or defects at the subject property that may have resulted in mold or moisture problems.

Next, a comprehensive visual inspection is conducted of accessible areas of the Florida property, concentrating in areas of known mold problems, in areas where plumbing fixtures and AC units exist and where condensation problems and moisture damage may exist.

Usually inspections and testing takes us about 2 to 3 hours and around 5 to 10 air samples are taken on residential mold investigations, sometimes more and sometimes less. Most testing firms use Air-O Cells or Micro 5 spore traps, however, CyClex, Andersen and other impactor plates are also used. With these airborne spore testing devices at least one outdoor sample is taken as a control for comparison. Samples are used for measurement of spores per cubic meter of air and for identification of mold genus. Some mold testing firms take air samples from inside suspect walls.

Direct samples of actual mold or moldy materials called bulk samples, or impression type samples of mold using simple clear tape or swabs are sometimes taken as well for identification of mold types. Such sampling methods lets the inspector know the type of mold growing on the surface that was sampled, but this provide less information in regards to your air quality.

Because of high humidity in some area such as Florida, both indoor and outdoor readings of humidity are also commonly taken during mold testing.

Temperature and dew point levels should also be monitored.

A moisture meter should be used to measure moisture levels in representative building materials.

Finally, after sample results are returned from the lab, your inspector will rely upon his or her knowledge of your specific buildings conditions, general building sciences, lab result interpretive skills, and interview information they obtained from you to draw conclusions regarding your mold problem. They should also come up with solutions to the problem as well. Information should be communicated to you in the form of a comprehensive and professional written report.

Some examples of the type of information you should expect to find on your report are as follows:

1) The causes of moisture or humidity problems at your property.

2) Did toxic mold testing indicate airborne mold spore levels at your property to be higher than normal.

3) What should be done to professionally and safely correct the mold problem without causing the mold spores to be dispersed during cleanup.

Von D from “LA Ink” TV series sets world record for tattooing

Wednesday, January 9, 2008

Realising how visual a medium tattooing is, tattoo artist Kat Von D of TV series LA Ink set a world record while raising funds to fight childhood blindness. In 24 hours, Von D tattooed 400 people with an “LA” logo, in her West Hollywood, California tattoo shop.

The December event at High Voltage Tattoo drew 1000 people in line, although only 400 could get the image emblazoned on them, for a $20 donation. Most learned of the event through her MySpace profile. In all, the funds raised will help 32,000 children’s eyesight, through Vitamin Angels.

Vitamin Angels is the only organization in the world solely dedicated to eradicating vitamin A definciency among children, with the goal of warding off youth blindness by 2020. The year 2020 is chosen because perfect vision is described as “20/20“.

First in line at the event was Jose Flores, who had camped out in front of the store since 7:15 the previous evening. Doors didn’t open until 10 am, and Flores didn’t get the tattoo until Von D was done with her friends and family, including internet celebrity Jeffree Star.

A Guinness World Records official was scheduled to attend, but was caught in a snow storm.

Katherine Von Drachenberg told the Los Angeles Times that, as a teenager, she “be at the mall and parents would grab their kids and be like, ‘Honey!’ It was like that scene in Pretty Woman, where the women on Rodeo Drive think Julia Roberts is going to shoplift. Now people just come up to me more out of curiosity — everyone from grandmas to soccer moms.”

The record setting event was filmed for LA Ink, a series that airs Tuesday nights on TLC in the United States. The series is a spin-off of Miami Ink, a series featuring Von D’s previous place of employ, before she set off on her own.

The series’ second season started last night, however that particular episode will air March 4.

SEPTA buys rail cars from NJ Transit to deal with crowding

Tuesday, July 29, 2008

As gas prices have risen in the United States, the regional transport authority for southeastern Pennsylvania, SEPTA, has seen a sharp increase in ridership, which has caused overcrowding on the trains.

“As fuel prices have continued to rise, SEPTA ridership has steadily increased and is the highest in 18 years,” said SEPTA General Manager Joseph Casey. Monthly ridership was 22 percent higher last month than a year ago.

“They have crushed loads on their rail lines, already where people are standing, and there’s not enough seats,” said Rich Bickel, the director of the Delaware Valley Regional Planning Commission.

“At peak times some railcars are standing room only and commuter parking lots are nearly full. All Regional Rail lines are running near full capacity and the train station parking lots are at about 90 percent capacity or more,” SEPTA spokesperson Felipe Suarez said.

While SEPTA awaits new Silverliner V trains from Hyundai Rotem, which begin arriving in 2009, it had hoped to lease eight rail cars from New Jersey Transit, at an agreed-upon rate of US$10,000 per month. However, due to problems with insurance and liability indemnification, the deal fell through, according to Casey.

SEPTA has entered a new agreement to purchase the eight rail cars from NJ Transit. The transit authority will pay US$670,000 for the cars and assorted supplies plus one additional inoperative car which will be used for spare parts. The rail cars will be operated using a SEPTA provided locomotive as they are not self-propelled.

The cars are being disposed of by NJ Transit because it has switched from single-floor cars to double-decker cars.

SEPTA is expecting to raise US$3.1 million by selling rail that has been out of service since 1981 at auction.

China overtakes Germany as world’s biggest exporter

Sunday, January 10, 2010

Chinese officials have said that their country’s exports surged last December to edge out Germany as the world’s biggest exporter.

The official Xinhua news agency reported today that figures from the General Administration for Customs showed that exports jumped 17.7% in December from a year earlier. Over the whole of 2009 total Chinese exports reached US$1.2 trillion, above Germany’s forecast $1.17 trillion.

Huang Guohua, a statistics official with the customs administration, said the December exports rebound was an important turning point for China’s export sector. He commented that the jump was an indication that exporters have emerged from their downslide.

“We can say that China’s export enterprises have completely emerged from their all-time low in exports,” he said.

However, although China overtook Germany in exports, China’s total foreign trade — both exports and imports — fell 13.9% last year.

Using A Home Equity Loan To Pay Off Credit Cards

By Debbie Dragon

The majority of Americans carry some sort of credit card debt. Unfortunately, many of us carry so much debt at such high interest rates that it becomes difficult to make a difference in the amount we owe, even when we send a payment to the credit card company each month. Falling behind just makes it worse, with late fees and finance charges added on to your next statement- and often a late payment will result in an increase in your interest rate. High interest rates quickly add up and result in our monthly credit card payments doing little or nothing to reduce the balance. It’s a vicious cycle that can be difficult to get out of.

One effective solution for getting off the credit card rollercoaster if you are currently a homeowner, may be to obtain a home equity loan and use it to pay off your high interest credit card debt. Homeowners often take home equity loans to make home improvements, figuring that the improvements will increase the value of their home and therefore make the loan worth it, but why not take a home equity loan to eliminate high interest debt and make it easier to pay your monthly expenses?

The Benefits of Refinancing Credit Cards with a Home Equity Loan

There are a number of benefits of credit card refinancing, with the most obvious one being the decrease in interest rates you are paying. The other primary benefit is the fact that you aren’t incurring more debt when you pay off your credit cards with a home equity loan – you’re keeping the amount you owe the same and moving the debt to a more affordable repayment method. If you had previously been struggling to make several individual payments every month, using a home equity loan to pay off your credit cards will result in a consolidation of your debt, making it easier to pay.

Additional benefits of refinancing credit cards with home equity include:

eliminating variable interest rates and getting a fixed interest rate obtain a tax benefit with an interest rate tax write-off on home equity loan interest that could not be done with credit card interest consolidate a number of monthly payments into a single, often lower, payment easier record keeping, write and mail one check a month and make one transaction in the check register rather than multiple.

Disadvantages of Paying Off Credit Cards with Home Equity Loans

Like everything good in the world, there are also some disadvantages to using a home equity loan to pay off credit cards, that you’ll want to consider, though. For example, once you pay off the credit cards, you suddenly have lots of room on them to charge new purchases! This can be extremely tempting, and if you’re not disciplined, you could end up charging more debt and making your situation even worse (because now you have the home equity loan PLUS the additional high interest credit card debt!)

It’s a good idea to either get rid of the credit cards by cutting them up, or by placing them in a fire safe box in your home so that you aren’t tempted to pull them out of your wallet when you’re out shopping. Refinancing the credit card debt with a home equity loan can give you the opportunity to live credit card-debt free. Most financial advisors do not recommend calling to physically cancel the accounts right away, because reducing the amount of ‘available credit’ will often have a negative impact on your credit score.

Yahoo chooses Dublin as location of new European Headquarters

Tuesday, February 15, 2005

Dublin — Yahoo!, the internet portal, today announced it has chosen Dublin, Ireland as the location of its European Headquarters. Ireland beat off stiff competition from other European countries to win the investment. The move is expected to create over 400 jobs – two thirds of which are expected to be for graduates with skills in information technology, financial services, customer support and website editorial.

Earlier in the month, Ireland lost a potentially multi-billion euro investment by Dell for a new manufacturing facility to Scotland. This was a huge disappointment for IDA Ireland – the countries main development agency – which had offered heavy incentives to the US computer maker. This brought about fears that Ireland had lost its ability to attract high-value investments from foreign multinationals – the driving force of Ireland’s Celtic Tiger economy.

Speaking about the investment, the Irish Minister for Enterprise, Trade and Employment, Micheál Martin, said winning the Yahoo project was a “truly outstanding achievement for Ireland”. Yahoo’s Senior Vice President International, John Marcom, said the decision to locate its European operations headquarters in Ireland was influenced by a “number of factors” which included “the calibre and volume of graduates available in Ireland, the up to date cost competitive telecommunications and data centre infrastructure, and the assistance of IDA Ireland.”

Yahoo is one of the world’s largest internet companies. Its decision to locate in Ireland confirms Dublin’s continued attractiveness to internet and technology companies – Google, Bell Labs, eBay, Microsoft, Amazon and Oracle all have significant Irish operations.

Bird flu spreading through Indonesia and China

Thursday, February 9, 2006

Two Indonesian women, 23 and 27, have tested positive for the H5N1 strain of avian influenza. They are in “serious condition but seem to be improving,” said Hariadi Wibisono, a senior health ministry official. They are being treated in the designated bird flu hospital, Sulianti Suroso in eastern Jakarta. It is believed that both women had contact with infected poultry. This brings Indonesia’s number of confirmed cases of the virus to 25.

A 26 year old female farmer in Fujian, China whose surname is Lin, also has the deadly H5N1 virus. She was admitted to the hospital in January, but it was only confirmed on Wednesday that she had the virus. Some of the people that have come in close contact with the woman are under observation by local health officials. Her current condition is reported as stable. This is China’s eleventh confirmed case of the virus.

Julie Hall of the Beijing-based World Health Organization said that the latest patient was “highly likely to have had contact with sick animals,” but the WHO is still waiting for information on how she could have gotten the disease.

Some experts believe migrating birds from China’s Qinghai Lake nature reserve are spreading the virus; however, there others who believe it’s shipments of poultry and poultry products along with poultry manure.

As avian influenza confirmed in Nigeria, “We shouldn’t assume that is just in Nigeria” said David Nabarro, the United Nations’ coordinator for bird flu and pandemic influenza. “The outbreak in Nigeria means [we] have another central point for the virus to become embedded into the poultry population.”

About 20 countries have reported outbreaks of the virus in birds which has sickened people who come in contact with the infected birds. If the rate of human infection continues to increase, so does the chance the virus will change into a form easily transmitted by humans.
