eBay removes Canadian town’s listing of sperm whale carcass

Thursday, May 8, 2014

Citing violations of its policy regarding “Marine mammal items”, eBay terminated an online listing on Monday by the town of Cape St. George, Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada, for a 40 ft (12 m) sperm whale carcass reportedly beached upon its shores about a week prior.

With an initial asking price of 99 cents, bidding for the carcass reportedly rose to C$238.03 within 15 bids. Reports variously state the final price of the whale, prior to the removal of the listing from the auction site on Monday at about 2:30pm, was C$2,025 or C$2,075. Listed in eBay’s “really weird” category, the carcass was considered by eBay to be an example of “items made from marine mammals regardless of when the product was made”, which are prohibited as per site rules.

Following a council meeting on Sunday in the town of 950 residents, Cape St. George’s mayor, Peter Fenwick, put the whale up on the auction site in a bid to have it removed from the town’s premises, citing a lack of cooperation from provincial and federal government officials on the matter. “It’s your problem, you solve it”, Fenwick recounted to The Globe and Mail (TGaM) as the response he received from them. Apart from eBay, Kijiji was also suggested as another avenue by which to sell the carcass.

Fenwick told CTV News, several years prior another sperm whale measuring 15 ft was beached in the area, but disappeared without incident, an act Fenwick attributed to be the work of Fisheries and Oceans Canada. “This time”, he remarked, “the authorities have told us that it’s our whale, it’s our responsibility to get rid of it.”

On putting the carcass for sale, Fenwick remarked, “We knew we had to do something with it and this seemed to be the least expensive way of disposing of it.” In a news release, Fenwick highlighted a possible use for the carcass, particularly its bones. “The 40 foot sperm whale will make a spectacular exhibit once the fat and muscle is removed, and the town is asking museums and other organizations that could use a whale skeleton to contact the town for further details.”

On retaining the whale himself, Fenwick stated, “As a town we would dearly love to keep the whale and put it on exhibit in the town but the cost of such a venture would be hard to justify.” Fenwick told TGaM the whale was “in half decent shape”. “This one looks like it died very recently and hasn’t decomposed much”, which Fenwick suggested elsewhere was due to the whale’s present location, partially submerged in near-freezing water. However, Fenwick noted its close proximity to a residential area, saying homeowners who lived there were “very interested in seeing the whale gone.”

eBay was not the only organization who barred the sale from taking place. “We also got threatened by the federal department of the environment, and told to pull the ad off or they would prosecute us”, said Fenwick on the opposition he said he received from Environment Canada, which viewed the sale as contravening a federal act designed to protect endangered species. “I received a call from the federal department of the environment saying that you’re not allowed to sell any parts of sperm whales, even if they’re dead.” he added. “So I said, ‘Oh that’s very good, I’m glad to hear that, now can you send somebody over here to get rid of it for us?'” Fenwick’s request was met with a negative response from Environment Canada.

“They’ve got to sort it out somehow. The uncertainty means it just sort of sits there and rots.” Once decomposition sets in, Fenwick remarked the carcass would become a “real nuisance”. “I don’t know if you’ve ever seen a whale that’s been rotting on the beach for a couple of months — actually sometimes you can’t see it for the clouds of flies around it — but you can smell it for about a mile”, he added.

On finding alternate means to dispose of the carcass, Wayne Ledwell, a member of Newfoundland’s Whale Release and Strandings, suggested the whale be towed out to a remote area. “They need to do that right away, when they come in and they’re fresh,” said Ledwell. “No one wants to go touch them … everything becomes gooey and slippery and you can’t stand up on the whale and it gets on your boots and you can’t get the smell off and then you go home and the dog rolls in it and you get it in your kitchen and you curse the whales, and you curse the government and … it becomes a mess.” Fenwick said they’d considered the idea, enlisting a local fisherman who, however, judged his engine too small for the job.

Previously, blue whale carcasses washed ashore in the towns of Trout River and Rocky Harbour, located about 150 km further north, and were taken by Royal Ontario Museum for preservation of the skeletons. Fenwick suggested the sperm whale carcass in his town might also meet a similar fate, as the sperm whale’s status as the largest toothed whale might prove to be a drawing attraction for such a facility.

Regarding what he plans to do next with the carcass, Fenwick said “If we’re not allowed to sell it, we’re willing to drop our 99 cent price down to a zero.” He said he hoped some eBay bidder stays interested in the whale. “We’ll be glad to talk to them about giving them the whale. We’re hoping that’s not illegal.” He also said he hoped the publicity from the town’s predicament, which garnered national attention, and its unusual means of finding a solution, would draw in someone interested in taking the whale off his hands at their own expense.

Should the whale fall under new ownership, Fenwick advised it be moved away from the town to a beach devoid of people, and the blubber left as food for seagulls, insects, and other predators. He estimated “It’ll probably take a year or so to get down to the skeleton.” As monetary gain was reportedly not what the town cared about, Fenwick was willing to offer the carcass for free, though one report noted money raised from the listing could have gone towards the building of a skate park.

The listing on eBay, as put up by Fenwick, read:

This 40 foot sperm whale rolled up on the beach last week. The actual seller is the town of Cape St. George which is responsible for disposing of it before it starts to decay. Once the fat and flesh is removed you have a spectacular 40 foot skeleton of the largest toothed whale in the world, great for museums and other attractions. To prevent it rotting in the town it can be towed to isolated beaches on the Port au Port Peninsula to allow the seagulls and other birds to remove the flesh. Call 709-644-2290 or 709-649-7070 for more details.

Please note the successful bidder will have to remove the whale within 30 days

Bank of America leads Consumer Financial Protection Bureau complaints about mortgages

Thursday, October 3, 2013

A review this week by Wikinews of US Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) complaints about mortgages in the United States shows Bank of America leads all lending institutions in complaints.

Since mortgages complaints were recorded in December 2011, 77,622 total have been added to CFPB’s database. 29.2% of these complaints involved Bank of America, with the second most received by Wells Fargo, accounting for 15.5% of all complaints. JPMorgan Chase ranked third by volume of complaints with 9.8%. Ocwen was fourth with 8.7% and Citibank was fifth with 4.8%. Nationstar Mortgage; Green Tree Servicing, LLC; HSBC; PNC Bank; U.S. Bancorp; OneWest Bank; SunTrust Bank; Flagstar Bank; and Select Portfolio Servicing, Inc. each had between 1.0 and 3.8% of total complaints. The remaining 14.4% of all complaints about consumer mortgages were divided between about 530 other lending institutions.

The Motley Fool reported last month that for the past fiscal quarter, the biggest US based mortgage lenders were from first to fifth Wells Fargo, JPMorgan Chase, Bank of America, Quicken Loans and U.S. Bancorp.

According to the US Federal Reserve, debt for family residences stands at US$10.706 trillion for the second quarter of 2013. As of the end of June of this year, Bank of America is the United States’s second largest commercial bank with US$1.343 trillion in domestic assets. Wells Fargo is the fourth largest commercial bank with US$1.251 trillion in domestic assets. JPMorgan Chase is the largest US commercial bank with US$1.329 trillion in domestic assets and US$1.947 trillion in total assets.

The mortgage complaints in the CFPB report include several subproducts. Conventional fixed mortgages account for 27.1% of all complaints. Conventional adjustable mortgages account for 10.0%. FHA mortgages account for 7.7% of all complaints. Home equity loans or lines of credit account for 3.8% of all complaints. VA mortgages are 1.4% of all complaints. Second mortgages and reverse mortgages each account for 0.6% of complaints. The remaining 48.7% of complaints are about other mortgages or other mortgage issues. A few years ago, FHA loans accounted for about 10% of all US mortgages while VA loans accounted for about 3%. Prime loans accounted for over 75% of the market and the rest were subprime mortgages.

California leads all states by volume of complaints with 14768. It is followed by Florida, New York, Georgia and Texas. When complaints are divided by a state’s total population, New Hampshire leads. The state is followed by Washington D.C., Maryland, Georgia and Florida. Complaints do not correlate with national rankings for August’s foreclosure rate by state where Nevada topped the list, followed by Florida, Ohio, Maryland and Delaware.

Two zip codes account for over 1,000 total complaints between them. 565 complaints originated in the 48382 zip code, which is in Commerce Township, Michigan, located in suburban Detroit. 553 complaints originated in the 33071 zip code, in Coral Springs, Florida. According to real estate website Zillow, there are currently 1,033 properties in foreclosure in Coral Springs while Commerce Township only has 131 properties currently in foreclosure. Four other zip codes have 100 plus complaints originating from them. 91730, in Rancho Cucamonga, California, had 158 complaints. 33409, in West Palm Beach, Florida, had 132. 92626, in Costa Mesa, California, had 125 complaints. 92660, in Newport Beach, California, had 122 complaints. Respectively, the towns had 534, 1,068, 153, and 134 properties currently in foreclosure. These numbers are higher than for the cities of a few sampled zip codes where there was only one complaint, such as Gold Hill, Oregon which has 4 properties in foreclosure, and Decatur, Illinois which has 6 properties in foreclosure.

The CFPB categorizes complaints into six categories: “Loan modification, collection, foreclosure” or problems when a person is unable to pay; “Loan servicing, payments, escrow account” or problems with making a payment; “Application, originator, mortgage broker”; “Credit decision / Underwriting”; “Settlement process and costs”, and “Other”. The CFPB says the complaint types indicate consumers “appear to be driven by a desire to seek agreement with their companies on foreclosure alternatives. The complaints indicate that consumer confusion persists around the process and requirements for obtaining loan modifications and refinancing, especially regarding document submission timeframes, payment trial periods, allocation of payments, treatment of income in eligibility calculations, and credit bureau reporting during the evaluation period.” Currently, 59.6% of all complaints against lenders deal with being unable to pay. 25.1% deal with problems in making a payment. 7.0% have to do with the application process.

Of the complaint-heavy zip codes, for 48382 in Commerce Township, Michigan, 98.9% of all complaints have to deal with being unable to pay. Accounting for 23.4% of all mortgage complaints in Commerce Township, 132 of the complaints for being unable to pay were made regarding Bank of America, accounting for 97.8% or all but 3 complaints against them from the zip. 121 of the Bank of America responses in Commerce Township were closed with explanation and 12 were closed with non-monetary relief. 33071 in Coral Springs is different, with 537 of the 553 complaints being categorized under other. Only 11 complaints relate to foreclosure and issues with being able to pay. 92626 in Costa Mesa, where 32% of the mortgage complaints were about Bank of America and 26.4% were about Wells Fargo, had 93.6% of its complaints dealing with being unable to pay. 5 total complaints dealt with payment issues and 3 dealt with applications.

Beyond regional variance in complaint types lodged, the top five mortgage lenders by volume of complaints all had being unable to pay as their top complaint category, ranging between 55.8% for Citibank and 69.4% for Bank of America. Problems with payment accounted for the second largest area of complaints, with Ocwen having the largest percentage of complaints at 31.9% and Bank of America having the smallest at 18.8%. Foreclosure was the top area of complaints for a number of other lending institutions including 1st Alliance Lending, OneWest Bank, Ally Bank, Banco Popular de Puerto Rico, Bank of the West, BMO Harris, BOK Financial Corp, Caliber Home Loans, Inc, Capital One, Deutsche Bank and EverBank.

Nationally, complaints reached a high of 5,840 for January 2013, 1,107 more than the next highest month of April 2013. The total emerging for September is the second lowest since records were first kept in December 2011. On a state by state level, this pattern largely repeats with a major exception for Florida which saw a peak of 849 complaints in June 2012. Then, as now, Florida was one of the top five states in the nation in its foreclosure rate. The national January spike came as the Qualified Mortgage standard required by the The Dodd-Frank Wall Street Reform and Consumer Protection Act of 2010 came into play. It required mortgage lenders to take steps to insure borrowers could repay their mortgages.

Bank of America’s complaint volume follows the national trend, with a spike in January 2013 with 1,925 total complaints. Unlike nationally, the next month by volume of complaints was February of this year with 1,598 complaints. Prior to that, the highest month was May 2012 with 1,418 complaints. The lowest volume of complaints is September this year with 334.

Wells Fargo matched national trends for volume of complaints by month, with the exception of the current month being the lowest on record for number of complaints with 197 compared to the next lowest month, December 2011, when they had 221. JPMorgan’s complaint volume by month spiked in January and March of this year with 504 complaints. April of this year was the next highest month with 493 complaints, edging out May of last year with 488 complaints. September this year is on track to be the lowest month by complaint volume.

The federal government shutdown is unlikely to impact the current mortgage situation in the United States directly for most consumers, though mortgage processing by the Federal Housing Administration could be slower, resulting in fewer mortgages processed.

Electric company faces lawsuits from residents of California neighborhood destroyed by explosion

Thursday, October 21, 2010

The Pacific Gas and Electric Company (PG&E) is facing several lawsuits, including one filed by residents of San Bruno, California, after a gas line exploded in their neighborhood on September 10, completely destroying over 50 structures, 37 of them homes. In their lawsuit, residents claim that PG&E knew the pipeline was “defective” and was a “ticking time bomb”. They further allege that the company was aware that the pipeline could fail, but did not act.

This wasn’t an accident. This was a foreseeable consequence of ignoring safety measures

The lawsuit was filed by at least five families who resided in the Glenview neighborhood of San Bruno. The Danko firm who is representing the residents say they expect to file at least a dozen more lawsuits against the company alleging they were liable and responsible for the explosion and the damages that occurred as a result of it. “This wasn’t an accident. This was a foreseeable consequence of ignoring safety measures,” one attorney representing the families said. It has also been reported that several other wrongful death lawsuits have been filed against PG&E. Three people were killed in the explosion.

The explosion and subsequent fire was originally thought to have been a downed commercial aircraft. Live scanner communications at the time of the explosion had stated that fire departments from six different companies reported to the scene. Residents say that firefighters were not able to bring the blaze under control because the pipeline was active for at least 5 hours after the explosion.

Residents filing the lawsuits are seeking damages and removal of the pipeline from the neighborhood. Jim Ruane, the mayor of San Bruno, backs residents in their request to PG&E to remove the pipeline from Glenview. “We want our neighborhood rebuilt, and we want our people back,” he said. A PG&E spokesperson denied having officially received the lawsuits, but said: “We remain committed to our customers in San Bruno and will continue to be there to help rebuild the neighborhood.”

What’s The Buzz About Cohesive Implants Vs. Silicone…}

What’s the buzz about cohesive implants vs. silicone…

by

zetterloo

What distinguishes cohesive implants is that the silicone gel is firmer, essentially a soft solid. If a cohesive implant is cut in half, there is no gross movement of gel, and the implant maintains its shape.

The way these are made is that the company uses more “crosslinker” in the making of the implant. The ingredients are the same, but with more crosslinker added, it makes the gel firmer.Unfortunately, given the recent media attention to cohesive implants, many are using the term to describe “regular” silicone gel implants. Technically, they are correct; all silicone gel is cohesive to some degree. But the term cohesive has always meant form stability, and when patients ask for cohesive gel, it is because they are looking for an implant with those particular characteristics of durability and shape retention. Hopefully, the terminology will be clarified in the coming years.Silicone or cohesive implants. Which did you use and why???

Italian MP starts thirst and hunger strike to protest Saddam execution

Thursday, December 28, 2006

Marco Pannella, a member of the European Parliament (MP) and leader of the Nonviolent Radical Party, started a thirst and hunger strike to protest the death sentence against former Iraqi leader Saddam Hussein.

“The Iraqi government would commit a horrible act, of the same level as those committed by Saddam Hussein himself,” Pannella said yesterday in a statement on the party’s Web site.

Granting clemency to the former Iraqi leader would be “an extraordinary occasion, to make literally explode in the hearth of the Middle East and in the world, an immense act of peace and a debate among the peoples and consciences, the scandal of nonviolence as an alternative to dictatorships and to the war; a war that now, more than ever, is impending on humanity”.

“In 2003”, he said, “despite the vote by a large majority of the Italian Parliament calling for the exile of Saddam Hussein as an alternative to the war, and for a free Iraq, both the Italian Government and the parliamentary opposition, did not follow up to that vital decision. Saddam Hussein was aware of our initiative. He could remember it now with gratitude and regret for not accepting it. A living Saddam Hussein, could become an essential and unique instrument to pacify and deligitize the ‘army’, made up of gangs of assassins, which is continuously committing massacres against the Iraqi people”.

Marco Pannella, aged 76, has been at the forefront in Italy of the promotion of important reforms regarding narcotics, facing incarceration on various occasions for his civil disobediences. Engaged in the defence of civil rights in Eastern European countries, in 1968, he was arrested in Sofia for having distributed leaflets against the Communist regime. He is one of the first promoters and founders of the “Green” and “ecologist” political movements in Europe.

On August 12, 2006, as reported by news agencies, Marco Pannella made a bold new proposal for World Peace, composed of three elements:

 • A World-Wide Satyagraha for Peace, including co-ordinated hunger strikes around the world

Lose Weight Naturally Stop Dieting And Start Eating

By Roy King

There are many ways to lose weight effectively but are totally misunderstood by many people. You want to lose weight but you have no idea where to begin, you think you’re doing everything right but you’re still not seeing any results, and the frustration sets in. What are these magical principles you need to know which speed up fat-burning?

The principles are easy to understand and get to know, and if you follow these easy principles expect to see 3 to 10 pounds of weight loss in the first week, And then consistent weight loss after that.

If you follow these principles there is no question that you will lose fat. This is not a crash diet plan, diet scam, pitch for supplements weight-loss pills, fruit supplement bars, definitely no calorie counting, or starvation diet, this is real information that you can use right now and for the rest of your life. These results are typical, just by eating the natural foods that your body needs to be healthy. You just have to learn which foods are preventing you from burning fat and hindering you from being healthy.

Understanding Sugar

Everybody attempting to loose fat must manage their particular blood sugar levels, when your blood glucose level is higher, meaning anything over the 100 to 120 zone for a consistent period of time your body has no choice but to release a hormone called insulin, insulin signals a person’s system to retain unwanted fat and that is exactly what you don’t want.

When insulin is released into your bloodstream it actually takes your blood sugar right from a dangerous high into an severe low, and you know what happens when your blood sugar is low, you happen to be hungry, experience food cravings, as well as your very exhausted. The solution to this problem is that you understand exactly which foods that you can eat that will not cause this blood sugar roller coaster.

What you also need to know is not all carbohydrate foods are made similar and those that you are eating and thinking are healthy perhaps are doing you more damage than good. Your body needs to have carbohydrates to make it function properly but there are certainly many carbohydrates that you do not need. For example, many people believe that the whole-wheat breads they are eating is good for them, definitely not. Whole-wheat breads and most all other types of breads create an increase in blood sugar levels and insulin flow. Whole-wheat pasta’s, cereals, and crackers, all having healthy claims on their packaging will also place your body in the fat storing state and prevent you from losing weight.

Which breads are considered healthy? Breads which are produced from sprouted whole grains such as rice and spelt will fit completely into your own excess fat meal burning plan and they taste good also. Many other healthy grains you need to consider are, rice, quinoa, and millet.

You know what else qualifies as a good form of carbs, pretty much any fruit or vegetable. The truth is that good fiber, vitamins, minerals, nutrients, and most fruits and vegetables will actually help you burn fat faster.

Understanding Fat

There are two types of fats that you need to understand, the good and the bad. Good fats will work in your favor burning a huge amount of unnecessary fats away, while bad fats will constantly be stored in your body. Whenever a person provides their body system the proper type of fat it really raises their own fat burning capacity in order to burn away your own undesirable body fat. Eat the right kind of fat and you will burn fat, eat the wrong kind of fat and you store fat preventing you from losing weight.

Here are the some of the bad fats that you should be avoiding causing you to acquire weight and preventing you to lose the bad fat from your body, Vegetable oils, Hydrogenated oils, margarines, canola oils, and definitely no substitute fake butter products.

The delicious fats that one could enjoy are raw nuts, avocados, coconut oil, olive oil, whole eggs, and real butter. Statistics have proven unnatural processed fats that are not full of chemical substances are not only your friend but everything you definitely will need to reduce that excess fat from your entire body.

Processed Foods

Considering sugar enemy number one, processed foods has become enemy number two. The majority of processed foods on the market today contain a huge amount of sugar combined with large concentrations of chemical substances which render it extremely hard for our bodies to eliminate excess fat as well as lose weight.

An individual’s hardworking liver has many functions but the two we are concerned with are the breakdown of fat as well as the actual filtering associated with dangerous toxins in your blood. If it’s your liver’s task to break-down body fat you want it working full strength. When your liver is too busy trying its hardest to remove all of the dangerous substances that are being released from all those highly processed food items there is virtually no time or even strength with regard to excess fat break down. The easiest solution to help your liver break down fat is to stop feeding it harmful foods to process.

What are some of those harmful substances? Synthetic sweetening, higher than average fructose syrup, hydrogenated cooking oils as well as refined soy products. These foods contain chemicals that are overwhelming your liver and you need to avoid eating them.

Healthy foods are ones which contain just one ingredient such as steak, poultry, seafood, eggs, vegetables and fruits, organic olive oil, coconut oil, butter, rice, sweet potatoes, there are literally hundreds of delicious meals that can be created with any combination of all these foods. By greatly reducing or eliminating processed foods from your diet plan allow your body to get in fat burning mode.

Understanding calories

It is actually definitely not the quantity of calorie consumption that really matters concerning weight loss, simple fact is that it’s the level of quality of food items that you’re consuming as well as the metabolic enhancing effects that are contained in your body that matters. Should you simply remove the unhealthy foods, the particular processed food items, and concentrate on eating the good foods that we mentioned earlier you’ll be able to get rid of the calculator as well as halt all of the calorie counting. There should be a reasonable amount of food that you simply consume, however what is specifically reasonable to you may not be reasonable for the other person. Surprisingly enough it’s a lot more calories than you think.

Calorie restriction may lead your body into starvation mode, when your body thinks that you’re dying of starvation it protects you by holding on to every last bit of fat and every last calorie that you have in your body.

knowing the foods that are good for you and which are not will assist you to lose weight quickly. This is where most diet plans seriously fail. They are not specific for you. This is where metabolic typing comes in. Knowing your metabolic category can provide a perfect fat reduction natural environment and help you lose unwanted weight quickly.

Creating a good metabolism system for your body to endure is paramount to a healthy weight loss system and maintenance program of your fat content.

Looking and feeling better is an ideal goal for everyone. Knowing and understanding your body and the foods that you consume on a daily basis are relevant to naturally losing weight, feeling good, and your healthy well-being.

Hard drive technology breaks storage density record

Sunday, April 10, 2005

Hitachi Global Storage Technologies, the San Jose, California-based joint venture of Japanese storage vendor Hitachi and U.S. technology giant IBM, has set a new record for storage density at 230 gigabits per square inch (Gb/in2). The company has developed technology to implement a recording method known as perpendicular recording, which allowed the increase in density above the current ~130 Gb/in2 limit.

Techworld claims there is a race between Hitachi and Toshiba for who will get the first drives to market which use the technology. According to Hitachi, they expect, “to ship [their] first perpendicular recording product in 2005 on a 2.5-inch hard drive”. Toshiba is also planning to ship a drive in 2005 that uses perpendicular recording.

According to Techworld, Toshiba will ship an 80 GB, 1.8″ drive in 2005. Toshiba’s 1.8″ drives are used in portable electronic devices such as Apple’s iPod, which is currently available in sizes 60 GB and smaller.

While all commercially available hard drives to date use longitudinal recording, perpendicular recording has roots in research done in academic circles over 100 years ago.

Hitachi Tech has produced a Flash animation that explains the rudiments of perpendicular recording in a music-video style.

Inspired by the 1970s Schoolhouse Rock series of educational animation shorts, the flash movie features whimsical moments with data bits and disk platters that speak and sing (not possible with today’s technology), it also contains realistic details. Of no importance to the viewer, but perhaps of interest to some, the animation shows Texas Instruments’ UC5608DWP chips visible briefly in the background. While TI’s UC5608DWP 18-line SCSI terminator chips have been made obsolete by the new UCC5618, the chips are indeed designed for use in hard drives.

Facial Creams With Bioactive Ingredients Are The Next Fountain Of Youthful Skin!

By Valerie Rosenbaum

Facial creams may contain emollients, moisturizers or both. Some of the better ones include nutrients that improve the skin’s health and appearance. Here are a few definitions and some ingredients that all into these categories.

Emollients are compounds that soften rough spots and soothe irritation. They work in three ways. They leave a layer of oil on the skin’s surface that slows moisture loss. They increase the skin’s ability to hold moisture and they act as lubricants to protect against damage from wind or friction.

Grape seed oil, passion fruit and Babassu wax are examples of naturally occurring emollients used for centuries by people from countries to which the plants are native. Newer compounds have been found in recent times, because of technological advancements. An example of one of the newer compounds is bioactive keratin.

Keratin is a protein naturally present in the cells of the skin’s outermost layers. It serves to make the cells harder, more impermeable. It is a water-loving protein. It is because of keratin that the skin starts to wrinkle and pucker when immersed in water for long periods of time.

Facial creams containing bioactive keratin have anti-aging activity. They stimulate the production of new cells which helps to increase the skin’s thickness and its antioxidant content. Those things are important for fighting the visible signs of aging.

The term emollient and moisturizer are sometimes used interchangeably. But moisturizers are actually compounds that add moisture to the cells. Water is your basic moisturizer. Some people are disturbed when they see water or aqua listed first on a label of ingredients, but it is an important compound. It is used for hydrating dry extracts, for mixing and for moisturizing.

Several factors determine the moisturizing capability and the safety of facial creams. The inclusion of the compounds mentioned above is one of the first factors to consider. As far as safety goes, the ones mentioned here are some of the safest.

The exclusion of mineral oil and sodium laurel sulfate should be verified according to a recent laboratory study. Those ingredients contributed to the growth of skin cancer cells in mice. A moisturizer prepared specifically for the study without mineral oil or sodium laurel sulfate did not have the same effect.

Bacterial contamination is the final factor to consider. Natural ingredients such as grape seed oil can become rancid if no preservatives are included in the finished product.

However, facial creams containing paraben preservatives may also contribute to skin cancer. The safest preservative choice is natural vitamin E. Manufacturers like for their customers to know about it when they use naturally occurring vitamin E. The natural costs more than the synthetic version, which is derived from petrochemicals.

This brief lesson about the moisturizers and emollients is incomplete. The subject of skin health is a long and in depth one. You could have specific problems that need to be addressed. The thing to remember is that there are safe, natural and effective solutions for all of those problems.

The right facial creams will treat dryness, protect sensitive skin and improve the skin’s softness. The wrong ones will do more harm than good.
