Professional Or Homemade Natural Skin Care Remedies?

Submitted by: Valerie Rosenbaum

Many companies provide natural skin care remedies and you can make some of your own. Here are the pros and cons of doing it yourself.

Water is one of the major components of cleansers, creams and other skincare products. Professional manufacturers used distilled or purified water for mixing.

You could buy distilled or purified water to use for mixing, but you would spend a lot of money. There is also the issue of bacteria growth. Once a jug of distilled or purified water is opened, it is no longer pure. Bacteria will be present, as well as other contaminants.

If you use the tap water present in your home and you are serviced by a public treatment facility, then you will be adding chemicals to the safe and natural compounds that you worked so hard to collect.

You could install a home purifier on your tap to reduce the number of chemicals and other contaminants present in your water. But, you would still have to mix your skincare products on a daily basis.

Without preservatives, bacteria would start to grow in any pre-mixed solutions. Using natural skin care remedies containing bacteria is counterproductive. They would be detrimental to your skin s health and appearance.

Mixing up your skincare products every day would be time consuming. As busy as most people are, they simply don t have time for that sort of thing.

Most cosmetic companies use artificial preservatives to help protect you from bacteria and the skin infections they can cause. The better companies preserve their products with naturally occurring vitamin E.

You might be able to add a crushed up vitamin E tablet to the natural skin care remedies you prepare at home. But, that s risky. There is also the problem of finding a tablet containing natural vitamin E. Most of the vitamin E on the market is manufactured synthetically using petrochemicals.

There are other reasons that making your own products is ill-advised. The preservative issue is just one of the most important in terms of your skin s health. At the least, you will experience more blemishes and breakouts. At the worst, you could develop a nasty staph infection. Staph infections have become more difficult to treat as they have become more resistant to antibiotics.

My suggestion is to leave it to a company you can trust. Let them prepare your natural skin care remedies. Not only is it the safest solution. It is also the most effective.

There are naturally occurring compounds to smooth, soften, moisturize and de-age your skin. Certain types of antioxidants have been shown to reverse sun damage and wrinkles. Active protein complexes have been shown to stimulate the growth of cells and collagen fibers.

For specific problems, such as psoriasis, eczema and acne, there are specific naturally occurring solutions. Shea butter works well because of its natural anti-inflammatory activity. Manuka honey helps to prevent acne and heal existing blemishes, because of its antibacterial activity.

Not all commercial natural skin care remedies are safe and effective. But, if you do a little shopping around, you can find the ones that are.

UN carries out first review of US human rights record

Saturday, March 19, 2011

The United Nations has completed its first ever assessment of the United States human rights record, which began last November. They made 228 recommendations for improvements. On Friday, the U.S. accepted about 174 of these, agreeing to such recommendations as the humane treatment of terror suspects and repudiation of torture, but rejected the recommendation to drop the death penalty.

The Legal Adviser of the Department of State, Harold Koh, listed nine core areas in which the U.S. agreed to make improvements, including civil rights, immigration, and the humane treatment of suspects held at Guantanamo Bay detention camp. Koh said President Obama agreed to push for ratification of conditions under the Geneva Conventions and to add protections for international armed conflict detainees. Koh refused to drop the death penalty as many European countries requested, arguing that it was legal under international law.

Some nations wanted the U.S. to reduce prison overcrowding, prevent racial profiling, and ratify international treaties protecting the rights of women and children. China and Russia wanted Guantanamo to be shut down. Cuba, Iran and Venezuela said the U.S. was ignoring too many recommendations.

The Obama administration joined the 47-nation UN Human Rights Council two years ago, allowing for increased international scrutiny. This is the first time the five-year-old council has reviewed the U.S. record of human rights. Nations are held accountable to make the improvements in the recommendations that they agree to.

In criticism of the U.S., the director of the American Civil Liberties Union’s human rights program, Jamil Dakwar, noted that the U.S., unlike 100 other countries, lacks an independent human rights monitoring commission.

Japan suggests dumping Fukushima waste at sea as radiation hits lethal levels

Monday, September 2, 2013

Radiation at Japan’s damaged Fukushima Nuclear Power Plant yesterday spiked to lethal levels around a leaking tank. Today the national Nuclear Regulation Authority (NRA) said contaminated water may be pumped into the sea.

Tanks holding contaminated water at the site continue to leak; operator Tokyo Electric Power Company (TEPCO) says up to 300 metric tons may have leaked from one tank alone. Radiation at that tank soared to 1,800 millisieverts per hour yesterday, a rate lethal to an exposed human in about four hours. Japanese law says nuclear workers cannot be exposed to more than 50 millisieverts in a year.

TEPCO says other locations at the plant have readings of 70–230 millisieverts per hour. Waste water totalling more than 300,000 tons has already been collected at the site; more is being stored at a rate of 400 tons per day. An unknown quantity of radioactive groundwater is flowing into the sea.

NRA boss Shinichi Tanaka told a press conference today that stored water may be pumped into the Pacific after treatment to reduce contamination to within legal limits. “I’m afraid that it is unavoidable to dump or release the water into the sea,” he said, adding “careless management” was being applied to the water by TEPCO.

The situation at Fukushima is changing everyday… The accident has yet to be settled down.

TEPCO first noticed a leak at the now-deadly tank in July but said it was minor and the NRA gave it a level one “anomaly” rating on the seven-part international scale. Last week that was raised to “serious incident”, level three, after TEPCO said up to 300 tons of water had leaked. The exact amount is unknown as there is no gauge to measure levels inside the tank and TEPCO staff had said water levels in the tank had remained constant.

Last week levels under the tank, where lost water is thought to have seeped into the ground, stood at 100 millisieverts per hour, and another at the facility had a level of 70 millisieverts per hour. TEPCO found another leak yesterday in a pipe between coolant tanks. Highly radioactive material was dripping out, but TEPCO says the leak is now fixed. Monitoring at the site has been increased since the original leak’s discovery two weeks ago.

Around 1,000 tanks are used to store water from the power plant’s coolant system, which was contaminated when three reactors melted down after a tsunami in March 2011. Around 160,000 people were evacuated in the worst nuclear disaster since 1986. Tanaka said “The situation at Fukushima is changing everyday… The accident has yet to be settled down.”

The new radiation involves beta rays, TEPCO said, which can be stopped with a sheet of metal. Water treatment has extracted caesium from the tanks but other radioactive elements remain. TEPCO’s equipment to remove other contamination is out of action due to filter corrosion after a few months of operating, but the government has demanded it be returned to service this month.

None of the tanks have monitoring equipment and TEPCO’s initial procedure involved two employees manually checking each tank over a two-hour period. Since the tank was found to be leaking the total monitoring staff has increased from ten to 60, and patrols are carried out four times a day instead of twice a day.

Prosecutors brought criminal charges against TEPCO and government officials including then-Prime Minister Naoto Kan for their handling of the crisis formed after the tsunami. Daily newspaper Sankei Shimbun today claimed all charges, brought after local residents complained, were to be dropped. Sankei Shimbun suggests a formal announcement may come within days.

Kansai Electric Power today began shutting down one of only two reactors still generating power in Japan, reactor #3 at Oi Nuclear Power Plant, for mandatory inspection. The other, Oi’s reactor #4, is to be permanently switched off this month. When the accident began nuclear energy supplied a third of Japan’s power requirements, but in the aftermath of Fukushima the nation has switched to fossil fuels.

2005 Afghan opium harvest begins

Tuesday, May 3, 2005

Most heroin sold in Europe comes from Afghanistan’s poppies. This past week, the 2005 opium harvest was in full view and going full speed in Afghanistan. The cultivators gathering resin from the crop are operating even near the main road through Kandahar and the farmers are out gathering resin from opium poppies in full view.

Last year 80% of the world’s opium came from Afghanistan and production is up over 239% since 2003, according to U.S. government estimates. Afghanistan is the world’s largest producer of illegal drugs.

In 2002 Super Bowl ads, the White House sent out the message that “drugs fund terrorists”. Doug Wankel, a former U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) official, says the opium industry is “financing terrorism. It’s financing subversive activities. It’s financing warlordism… And if it’s a threat to the government of Afghanistan, it’s a direct threat to the national security interests of the United States.”

“The Bush administration has decided not to destroy the opium crop in Afghanistan,” stated a U.S. intelligence official returning from Afghanistan in relation to the 60% smaller 2002 crop. The source, who requested that he not be identified, noted “U.S. forces could destroy the crops using aerial spraying techniques, but no such actions are planned.”

U.S. plans to spray the crops were canceled at the request of Afghan President Hamid Karzai, who has called for jihad or “holy war”, but is concerned that aerial spraying could be harmful to the health of Afghan villagers. The U.S. claims that the spraying would be safe, but is granting Karzai’s request.

Karzai has indicated that he may change his mind if other U.S. strategies fail to halt the opium. Congress budgeted $774 million for anti-drug operations in Afghanistan just this year.

The CIA reports in From Flowers to Heroin that it takes 10 kg of opium to make 1 kg of 90% pure heroin. The CIA states that impurities are introduced into the processed heroin before it hits the street, making the purity of the end consumer product about 40%. That implies that 10 kg of opium makes about 2.25 kg of 40% pure heroin.

The Guardian reports that the 2002 opium harvest was 3400 metric tons. Using the conversion supplied by the CIA, 2002’s 3400 opium harvest could be converted into 765 metric tons of heroin. According to the International Narcotics Control Board, the 2003 opium harvest was 3600 metric tons. Using the estimated 239% increase of the present harvast over 2003, it means that the 2005 harvest is about 8600 metric tons.

The 2002 street price of heroin in the UK was about 60 £ per GRAM, or (assuming the present 1.89 USD to 1 £ exchange) 113.40 USD per GRAM. As the supply goes up the price will come down some, so for this calculation only the 2002 figures will be used. If all the opium harvest is converted into heroin and all of it is sold at the UK street price, the total street value of the harvest is 86.7 billion USD. (765 metric tons x 1000 kg/metric ton x 1000 grams/kg x 113.4 USD/gram = about 86.7 billion USD.) To the extent the 2002 numbers are valid today, the street value of the 2005 harvest should be roughly twice the street value of the 2002 harvest, about 173 billion USD.

To put these numbers in perspective, the total market capitalization of Ford, General Motors and Daimler Chrysler combined is about 76 billion USD. The total market capitalization of Toyota and Honda combined is about 167 billion USD.

The Financial Action Task Force (FATF) was formed to promote harmonization of international antimoney laundering (AML) laws. Despite the fact that tens of billions of USDs are generated from the Afgan opium harvest alone, the FATF has not added Afghanistan to its blacklist of uncooperative nations. One has to wonder, therefore, what the poppy farmers are doing with their share of the money that escapes the notice of the banking system and the FATF.

Medical Assistant Duties And Responsibilities

A medical assistant is a professional who helps other health professionals in various ways. A vocational school is the platform for this field. The course is actually a short one compared to some others connected to it. The individual who is studying to be one should know that he or she will also need to be registered and certified before they can practice. They are different from physician’s assistants, who are actually qualified to do other more complex procedures that may involve surgery and therapy among other things. What They DoA medical assistant supports doctors and other health professionals. The support that he or she does comes in many forms, primarily that of presenting these professionals with details of the patients that they are there to check up on or visit. The details on these reports may include, but are not limited to, the patients’ vital signs, keeping records of data gathered from individuals admitted in the hospitals, giving medicines and administering injections as per the orders of the attending doctors and the collection of the necessary samples from patients that are needed to complete a test or a screening. They may also be allowed to take x-rays and do other more advanced things after they have completed a course or training program pertinent to it. The medical assistant can take the vital signs of patients regularly to enable close monitoring of their health and well-being. The data from these will help the doctors assess and monitor their patients. These records will be kept for future references. The giving of medicines and the administering of injections can also be part of the duties that is included. In some states, these two tasks can only be done by those who have undergone special training or have taken a special test or screening. Other states also allow them to assist a surgeon or a physician in their routine tasks, such as a bevy of cosmetic treatments and remedies. These may include the administration of tumescent and local anesthesia, supervised incisions, dermal resurfacing using laser and many others.Other than clinical or surgical duties, the medical assistant may also be tasked by his or her superiors with some administrative responsibilities. These duties may include, but are not limited to, the backup and filing of patients’ records, filling up of health insurance paperwork, answering calls through the telephone, scheduling appointments, helping patients with hospital admittance and many others. The actual work that this individual may be expected to do may be dependent on what the agreement is between him or her and the hospital or doctor who hires them. These are the more basic duties and responsibilities that a medical assistant is expected to do during work. Other responsibilities may be highlighted upon hiring and be discussed extensively and in detail as needed. Salary should also be discussed and clarified before any hiring is to be done to avoid any misunderstandings. This is necessary before any contract or agreement is to be finalized.

Study links foie gras consumption with Alzheimer’s, arthritis, diabetes, other diseases

Wednesday, June 20, 2007

A study published on June 18 in the American Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences has found a link between the consumption of foie gras and other meat products and a number of diseases, including Alzheimer’s disease, rheumatoid arthritis, diabetes mellitus type 2, tuberculosis, and amyloidosis. The link exists in genetically susceptible individuals.

The study was lead by Alan Solomon, M.D., a professor and researcher at the University of Tennessee Graduate School of Medicine and the director of the Human Immunology and Cancer / Alzheimer’s Disease and Amyloid-Related Disorders Research Program. Amyloidoses are a group of disease states caused by the deposition in vital organs of proteins in the form of fibrils, causing a range of symptoms such as swelling and kidney damage. The deposition of amyloid beta in the brain is central in the origin of the disease process of Alzheimer’s disease. Foie gras is made from the livers of ducks or geese that have been force-fed.

According to Solomon, “we posit that this and perhaps other forms of amyloidosis may be transmissible, akin to the infectious nature of prion-related illnesses [such as mad cow disease]. In addition to foie gras, meat derived from sheep and seemingly healthy cattle may represent other dietary sources of [the fibrils]. People with a family history of Alzheimer’s disease, diabetes, rheumatoid arthritis or other amyloid-associated diseases should avoid consuming foie gras and other foods that may be contaminated with fibrils,” continued Solomon.
