Stars “schmooze” at Toronto International Film Festival party

Monday, September 10, 2007

The Toronto International Film Festival rages on in Canada, as various companies and celebrities host parties. One of the largest so far was eTalk Star! Schmooze hosted at the former CHUM-City Building in the Queen West neighbourhood of Toronto.

Wikinews sent freelance photographer Robin Wong to this star-studded event, which included the casts of many of the movies being played at the festival.

The second day of the festival didn’t stop there.

Toronto’s Design Exchange museum and education centre hosted a party for the movie “Michael Clayton”, for which George Clooney was scheduled. Earlier in the day, Sienna and Savannah Miller launched their new twenty8twelve fashion label at the Holt Renfrew department store, a classy, upscale Canadian chain.

Tonight actress/singer Hilary Duff is scheduled to host a party at the club This is London. CTV will host an afterparty for Matt Damon‘s documentary Running the Sahara, and some of his Oceans co-stars are expected, including Clooney. Wyclef Jean and the African runners featured in the film are also on the guest list.

A One x One Benefit at the Four Seasons Centre for the Performing Arts will see Matt Damon, Richard Gere, and Shakira. Gere scrambled up to Toronto today after appearing live on Good Morning America and Live with Regis and Kelly.

A 2002 study by the Toronto International Film Festival Group found that the event brings CDN$67 million to the Toronto economy. With stars dropping CDN$5000 a night on a room at the Four Seasons Toronto, or $10K on a dinner at Bistro 990, the numbers quickly begin to explain themselves. Distributors spend $30 million on purchasing films for release at the fest, one of the top numbers worldwide.

Planning To Visit A Foreign Country? Know The Fa Qs Of A Visitor Health Cover

Are you a nomad? Of course, who doesn’t like to explore new countries? Taking time out of your busy schedule and planning to relax for a few days with your family is in your bucket list? Travelling abroad requires taking care of many items, such as visas, passports and their health as well. Often, during a trip, people overlook their health needs thinking they’d only be at a location for some time. But problems with illness or safety can occur anywhere and anytime. So, this is the best practice to be prepared for the worst circumstances and taking precautions so that one can handle the situation, especially when you are planning to travel countries where the cost of medical expenses is pretty high.

That is where an Overseas Visitor Health Insurance (OVHC) comes into the picture. Usually, this type of insurance plan is short-term and offers protection against any accidental injury or disease while travelling to another country. There are several questions people have regarding this type of insurance. Below are some of the customers’ frequently asked questions you’d like to know before you go ahead with the travel plan. In Australia, purchasing a Visitor Health Insurance is not mandatory for tourist visas; however, the government of Australia always recommends buying one prior to travelling the country to avoid unwanted health emergencies.

What is the difference between Visitor Insurance and travel insurance plan?

Visitor health plans are somewhat similar in terms of benefits to the travel insurance. Nonetheless, the former fulfils the insurer’s medical requirements explicitly when visiting another country along with other travel insurance costs. On the other hand, travel insurance covers for travel expenses, such as luggage loss, delayed flights, fraud and even delayed flights.

When should you purchase it?

The right time to purchase it is before travel. Only after you have entirely ascertained your travel plans and ensure all your travel documents are in place, you should buy a health insurance plan for the visitor. It is best to buy it in a way so that the insurance plan starts functioning from the date of departure, and you can be covered right from the start of your journey.

What is the minimum duration of coverage?

The standard length of health insurance coverage for tourists varies from one insurance provider to another. Talk to various insurance companies until you find one that suits your needs and the length of your stay in another country. Always remember to keep the insurance for the entire duration of your visit to avoid any health-related medical expense.

What is covered by the OVHC?

The benefits vary from one provider to another. However, generally, Visitor health benefits cover much of your medical needs, such as:

  • Medical emergencies
  • Medicines Prices
  • Health cover costs for visitors
  • Hospital costs
  • Surgery costs
  • Dental costs
  • Health injuries
  • Emergency Disposal
  • The cost of getting home in the event of a disease, death or accident
  • Assistance in legal matters
  • Loss of baggage
  • Delay in flights, cancellation costs
  • Theft

What should you keep in mind while buying the insurance?

You can buy this insurance by contacting an insurer either online or conventionally. A wrong buy can cause you a lot of money. So, it is always recommended that you should research before buying the policy. Not only that, but you should also buy the plan according to the needs. Budget is still a key factor; however, you should also check what benefits you are getting. Getmypolicy.online can be your go-to go site while buying a visitor’s health cover. We understand that it is quite a hefty job to visit every insurance provider’s website to know the best deal. But, getmypolicy.online makes this easy for you. You can get the quote from the leading insurance provider’s by providing the visa type, start and end date. You can compare the plans and buy what is best suited for you.

Allianz Global Assistance is a big name when it comes to buying an OVHC policy. They are operating in 66 countries, catering to millions of consumers, providing a wide variety of products and insurance services. With 24*7 availability and an extensive network of medical practitioners, Allianz OVHC is undoubtedly a trustworthy name while buying an Overseas Visitor Cover.

Being in a foreign country is your dream, and you are expecting it to be a daunting experience. So, any mishap or illness during that time can be quite upsetting. The costs of medical care are also much costlier overseas, which makes it extremely essential to remain protected. So, if you don’t have it, it’s time to start looking for the best health insurance for visitors, instead of merely choosing cheap health insurance plans that give them little coverage.

Space Shuttle Atlantis launch delayed until 2008

Sunday, December 9, 2007

NASA have today announced that the launch of Space Shuttle Atlantis, mission STS-122, which is a module delivery mission to the International Space Station (ISS), will be delayed until January 2nd, 2008 at the earliest, after scrubbing today’s launch attempt, and an earlier attempt on December 6th.

The decision to scrub the launch attempt was made at 7:24 a.m. EST by shuttle program managers. The reason behind the scrubbing is to allow shuttle engineers to spend time diagnosing and fixing the erroneous readings presented to the crew and Mission Control by the intermittent malfunctioning of a critical engine cutoff sensor (ECO). While only one of the four sensors was malfunctioning, the current launch criteria for the mission state that all four ECOs must be functioning correctly in order to launch.

At a meeting held at 9 a.m., NASA’s Mission Management Team for STS-122 decided on a postponement until January 2nd at the very earliest. Atlantis is due to deliver the European Space Agency’s (ESA) Columbus laboratory module to the ISS. Alan Thirkettle, ESA’s Space Station Program Manager, said, regarding the delay in launch: “In the big picture, it’s not a setback. [But] it is disappointing because we have 750 people over here.”

Water Quality For Horses

Water Quality for Horses

by

Ronald Pawlowski Way back in the early nineties, people found it trendy to drink bottled water. Today, most people will drink only bottled water that costs more per gallon than their gasoline. Few will trust municipally treated water and those on farms and other rural properties using wells are concerned with run-off contamination, pesticides, chemicals as well as bacteria that may make their water unfit for human consumption. What about water for your horses? Many articles discuss the quantity of water that various horses need on a daily basis. Estimated Water Intake For Horses Activity Gallons/Day Non-Working 4-8 Gestation 7-9 Peak Lactation 9-11 Medium Work 9-15 Heavy Work 12-15 (Reference: NC State University) However what elements will affect their quality of your water? Are there different standards for horses as opposed to humans? Not surprisingly, the answer is yes! You’ll find that horses can tolerate a lower quality of water compared to humans, however it’s important to know what these levels are. We’re intentionally not going to discuss limits of various elements in detail, as opinions vary from medical institutions as well as universities on the levels acceptable to horses. However, we can highlight the main elements in water to evaluate and offer insight into how to determine whether your water is deemed acceptable or not. Step 1 You should have your barn water tested every six months. Schedule your tests in the mid Spring and Mid Fall where your wells will encounter the most surface runoff. During these periods of the year, your well may encounter the largest level of pollutants. Shallow dug wells are more affected by surface run-off in comparison to deep drilled wells. Let the water run for a few minutes out of your source tap and capture a sample in an approved water sample container. These are usually available at no charge from your municipality and have a small amount of preservative in them to keep your sample stable until it is tested in the lab. Take your sample to a certified laboratory. Certified labs have been inspected by your State or Province and satisfy their criteria in testing methods and controls to assure accurate test results for your sample. Most jurisdictions will publish a list of certified labs in your area. Step 2 Discuss the purpose of your water testing with the laboratory management. Explain that you want to determine water quality specifically for horses on your property. They can advise on which specific elements are important to your horses’ health that may be suspect in your area. Ask about the following elements and test criteria: Total bacteria count Total Coliform count Fecal Coliform count Nitrates Nitrites Total Dissolved Solids Your lab may also test for trace minerals such as iron, aluminum, zinc and magnesium. Step 3 Have your water test interpreted into plain language so everyone can understand it. Either ask the lab to interpret the results or refer to other reputable sources such as your veterinarian or a university that studies equine health. Your interpretation should list acceptable numerical ranges for horses and your results so that you can demonstrate to all visitors to your barn that your water is healthy for horses. Within a short time, it will be a common practice to post water test results in horse barns. Those that start this practice will be ahead of the curve and demonstrate leadership and initiative in an area that will become increasingly important to all horse owners. horses, equestrian, water, health, Total bacteria count, Total Coliform count, Fecal Coliform count, Nitrates, Nitrites, Total Dissolved Solids, water tests

A new study has found that people storing extra fat around their waist have a strongly increased chance of early death, even if their overall weight is average. The study, published in the New England Journal of Medicine today, found that for each addition 5 cm on the waist, the chance of early death is increased by between 13% and 17%.

In the study, 360,000 people from across nine countries in Europe were surveyed.

One of the study’s authors, Professor Elio Riboli of Imperial College London, commented on the findings. “We were surprised to see the waist size having such a powerful effect on people’s health and premature death,” he stated.

The European Commission, the executive branch of the European Union, has today lifted its ban on unusually shaped fruits and vegetables, in what the EU’s agriculture commissioner has called “a new dawn for the curvy cucumber and the knobbly carrot”.

The regulation has previously been criticized as an example of the EU’s bureaucracy by critics of the organisation.

The products affected by the deregulation are apricots, artichokes, asparagus, aubergines, avocadoes, beans, Brussels sprouts, carrots, cauliflowers, cherries, courgettes, cucumbers, cultivated mushrooms, garlic, hazelnuts in shell, headed cabbage, leeks, melons, onions, peas, plums, ribbed celery, spinach, walnuts in shell, water melons and witloof/chicory.

Recent anonymous press briefings by US State Department officials indicated that its arms control division may punish Blackwater Worldwide for improper paperwork.

The Directorate of Defense Trade Controls has the power to fine or agree voluntary penalties with exporters of certain weapons, who do not follow correct procedures. Blackwater Worldwide, a private military company, exported automatic weapons to Iraq that became the subject of a federal investigation first disclosed in 2007.Concern was expressed by the unnamed officials that paperwork errors may make the weapons untraceable, and that some reached Iraq’s black market.

‘Rock and roll never dies’: Italy wins Eurovision after 30 years

Tuesday, May 25, 2021

On Saturday, Italy won its third victory at the Eurovision Song Competition, held this year at the Rotterdam Ahoy arena in Rotterdam, Netherlands. The Italian rock band Måneskin’s song Zitti E Buoni won 524 points from public and professional judges. French singer Barbara Pravi’s song Voilà received 499 points, and Swiss singer Gjon’s Tears Tout l’univers got 432 points; finishing second and third respectively.

Out of 39 countries participating this time, 26 countries including hosts Netherlands and the Big Five — France, Germany, Italy, Spain and the United Kingdom — competed in the finals. The competition began on May 18. Three of the Big Five, and the hosts finished at the very bottom of the vote ranking. Netherlands got 11, Spain got six, Germany bagged three and the UK received zero points. All four received zero points from the audience.

Dutch singer Duncan Laurence won the 2019 edition of Eurovision in Tel Aviv winning 498 points for his song Arcade. That victory meant Netherlands was to host the competition 2020, which was cancelled because of “escalating spread of COVID-19 throughout Europe”. This year, 3500 people were in audience, multiple reports stated. They all were tested negative to be eligible for attending the event, Eurovision stated.

Iceland’s Daði Freyr could not perform live in both semi-finals and the final, having tested positive of the virus. A pre-recorded performance of Daði og Gagnamagnið was played, which finished fourth, receiving 378 points, 12 more than Ukrainian singer Go_A’s song Shum.

Switzerland finished at top, during the jury voting, receiving 267 points. France finished second during the national jury voting with 248 points. During the jury voting, when France and Switzerland were very close to each other, Pravi said, “I think it is crazy that two French songs are on the top, thank you!”

National juries of both Switzerland and the UK awarded 12 points to France. Pravi uttered “Merci!” ((fr))French language: ?Thank you!, clapped and blew a kiss towards the Swiss team, upon receiving 12 points from the Swiss jury.

Italy received 318 points from the audience, putting them on top. That sufficed them to win the competition. Upon winning, Måneskin’s lead vocalist Damiano David said, “We just want to say to the whole Europe, to the whole world, rock and roll never dies.”

As the winner of this year’s competition, Italy is to host next year’s Eurovision Song Competition. Italy had previously won Eurovision in 1990. Måneskin is the first band to win the competition since 2006, the BBC noted.

The Types Of Betting On Sports In Us Bookmaker Sites

Are you into sports? Well, would it be more exciting if you can not only enjoy the sports you love, but also cheer on your favorite team and make money out of it? Betting on sports allows you to not only enjoy the game, but make it more exciting by injecting it with some sports betting. When this is done responsibly, you not only become a spectator of the sports you love, but you are also able to become part of it. And if you are good in analysis and have great inside knowledge of the sports, with added luck you can actually make a lot of cash bybetting on sports.

Here are the types of bets in bookmaker sites in the US which you can choose from. Enjoy and good luck with betting on sports.

The Types of Betting on Sports in US Bookmaker Sites # 1: Run line, puck line or goal line bets

This type of betting is an option and is given as an alternative to people who play straight up/moneyline prices in the games of baseball, hockey and soccer. These systems showcase bets which are at a fixed point spread. The run line, puck line or goal line bets give higher payouts on the favored and lower payouts if you choose the underdog team. The rates, of course, are compared to the moneyline payout system.

The Types of Betting on Sports in US Bookmaker Sites #2: Future wagers

Okay, so betting is pretty much betting on the future outcome of an event. However, in this particular description, it is that event which will happen in the long term timesheet and is gauged by the passing of weeks or months. An example of this is in the NFL. As soon as the season begins, you can already have future wagers, specifically betting on who will win the Super Bowl. The season of the NFL starts in September but the champion would be announced in February so the payout will be given only at the time. The payout in this type of wager is huge.

The Types ofBetting on Sportsin US Bookmaker Sites #3: Head to head

In this type of betting, the bettor tries to correctly guess the result of the competing teams going against each other rather than the overall result. Sometimes this is called ending.

The Types of Betting On Sports In The US Bookmakers Site #4: Totalizators

Sometimes, this is called flexible rate bets. Totalizors make odds which are changing in actual time based on the exchange of the results of a game. These outcomes take into consideration the return rate of the US bookie that is offering the bet.

U.S. superbug expected to emerge in Canada

Wednesday, January 3, 2007

An infectious superbug spreading in the United States is to “emerge in force” in Canada, doctors fear. The bacteria have been reported popping up in day care centers and locker rooms across the U.S. Usually elderly or very ill hospital patients get the disease.

More than 2 million U.S. residents are infected every year, the Centers for Disease Control estimates.

An article in the Canadian Medical Association Journal (CMAJ) on Tuesday said that Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) are “spreading with alarming rapidity.” The bacteria can cause boils, pimples, or in extreme cases, flesh-eating disease, and more.

“The resistant bacteria is an old foe with new fangs: a pathogen combining virulence, resistance and an ability to disseminate at large,” wrote Dr. John Conly, medical professor and an infectious disease specialist at the University of Calgary.

British Columbia, Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, and Ontario are the provinces which already have had MRSA in hospitals.

A 30-year-old Calgary, Alberta man died last year of lung abscesses associated with the infection, as well as a three-month old toddler in Toronto, Ontario.

Toronto Blue Jays outfielder Alex Rios, last summer, suffered from an infection caused by Staphylococcus aureus in his leg. Pitcher Ty Taubenheim had a similar infection on his foot.

Doctors are currently investigating some Calgary residents, who could be one of the first Canadian reports of MRSA outside of a hospital setting.

Ariel Sharon’s brain shows activity

Saturday, January 14, 2006

Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon remains in a coma after 10 days.

Medical experts on the outside say that Sharon’s failure to regain consciousness does not look well for his recovery.

On Wednesday, doctors began reducing the level of sedatives with the intent of drawing Sharon out of an induced coma. Hospital officials say that Sharon remains “lightly sedated”, but are not sure when he will wake up once they stop giving him the sedatives.

New reports say an EEG has shown that Sharon has activity on both sides of his brain and doctors say that’s the most “promising” signs they have had since they started to bring him out of the coma. Doctors also say that activity in both lobes doesn’t indicate anything about the extent of the brain damage. “It is another piece of information that on its own means nothing,” said Dr. Gal Ifergan, a neurologist at Soroka Medical Center in Beer Sheva, who is not treating Sharon.

Although he has activity on both sides of his brain, Sharon could still have extensive brain damage, Ifergan said. He also said that it’s “very worrisome that he hasn’t woken from his coma”, yet.

There are 2 major types of stroke, and Sharon has had both. The first was a mild stroke Dec. 18 caused by a blood clot that lodged in an artery in the brain, cutting off blood flow and causing minor damage. The second occurred just one day before he was scheduled to undergo surgery to repair a hole in his heart. This one was a severe cerebral hemorrhage

“After nine days he has had very slow progress and that indicates more permanent injury to a level where his quality of life is affected,” Dr. Demetrius Lopes, a Rush University Medical Center neurosurgeon said. “And then decisions will have to be made,” he added.

Sharon’s condition is still critical but stable.
