Participant claims drug trial gave him cancer

Sunday, August 6, 2006

A man who fell ill after participating in a drug trial at Northwick Park Hospital in north-west London earlier this year has revealed he has the early signs of an “aggressive” form of cancer.

David Oakley was one of six men who volunteered to take part in a trial of a drug intended to cure conditions like rheumatoid arthritis and leukemia in March. But after taking the drug, the thirty-five year-old suffered multiple organ failure and prominent inflammation.

Mr Oakley, who lives in west London, told today’s Mail on Sunday that doctors have informed him he has “definite early signs” of lymph cancer. He also fears he could develop other debilitating illnesses like rheumatoid arthritis, multiple sclerosis, chronic fatigue syndrome and lupus. He will now undergo tests to see what treatments will be required. “It’s very frightening,” he told the newspaper. “I’m trying not to be too down about the thought of having chemotherapy or that I might die.”

Mr Oakley was paid £2,000 for his involvement in the trial, and that money subsidised his marriage to wife Katrina in June. He now fears their hope of having children has been jeopardised as a result of his ill health. “Katrina and I had planned to start trying for children six months after getting married, but we can’t do that now. Everything is on hold.”

There is nothing to suggest that Mr Oakley’s cancer was triggered by the experiment. He is now seeking compensation from Parexel, the company which organised the drug trial. “Really, I’m just trying to do my bit and pointing out their mistake. If someone doesn’t point it out it could happen again and there’s no way I would like to see someone else go through what we’re going through right now.” Earlier this year, six men had to be admitted to an intensive care unit at the same hospital, in another Parexel drug trial which caused much upset.

US Nationwide Pollution Permit Restrictions Upheld

Wednesday, October 4, 2006

The US Army Corps of Engineers decision to place restrictions on issuance of nationwide pollution permits has been upheld by a federal court. In National Association of Home Builders v. Army Corps of Engineers, the District Court for the District of Columbia found that the Corps of Engineers had not acted in an “arbitrary” or “capricious” manner in changing the terms and conditions for issuance of a national pollution permit, including reducing the size of area into which pollutants may be discharged from 10 acres to 1 acre, raising the threshold for requiring additional permits from 1 acre to 1/10 acre,

A nationwide permit allows an organization to engage in certain industrial activities on a national basis (such as mining and construction), reducing the amount of paperwork and filings needed for otherwise minor environmental impacts, as opposed to an ordinary permit for a specific location which will engage in activities which generate water pollution.

Due to concerns over the amount of discharge taking place in waterways, the Corps of Engineers began in the 1980s to reduce the authority granted by nationwide permits and to bar use of the permits in certain ecologically sensitive areas.

Some industry groups, including the plaintiff in the above case, The National Association of Home Builders, sued the Corps of Engineers in 2000 over the change in an attempt to block its implementation. Environmental groups, including the Sierra Club, were given permission to intervene in the case in support of the actions of the Corps.

Environmental groups were pleased with the decision, but are concerned over other actions of the Bush Administration, such as the attempts to weaken provisions of the 2002 Clean Water Act to allow additional dumping of construction and mining waste into waterways as fill material.

School dinner costs just 49p in Wales

Wednesday, March 30, 2005A survey carried out by BBC Wales has revealed that the contents of a school meal in Wales cost on average just £0.49 per pupil. Average spending on meal ingredients varied slightly from council to council; with the Cardiff City council spending just £0.40 on each meal, whilst Powys council lavished £0.69 per pupil.

The survey follows a recent surge in media coverage of the eating habits of teenagers and children in the UK. Celebrity chef Jamie Oliver recently embarked on a campaign to improve food standards and raise awareness in schools. In response to his campaign the government has promised to spend an additional £280 million over three years on school food in England.

Volunteers and food needed for flooded Manitoba, Canada

Tuesday, March 31, 2009

Local municipal and provincial volunteers in Manitoba, Canada are exhausted in their efforts to divert the rising waters of the Red River of the North.

It has been hard work with little sleep for the residents who live on the shores of the Red River to shore up their defences with sandbags, build dikes, clear frozen culverts and break ice jams

Volunteers to spell relief for local volunteers and food are desperately needed.

“It’s a week now we’ve been doing this … you’re talking four, five, six public works guys. In my one community we’ve got 25 volunteer firefighters and those guys have been going 24/7, so of course it’s wearing them down.” said Paul Guyader, Manitoba’s emergency measures coordinator.

“We’re dealing with one of the biggest floods the province has ever seen,” said Steve Strang, mayor of St. Clements, Manitoba “We’ve put out hundreds of thousands of bags already. The municipalities are working very well, we’re working with the provincial government, we’ve brought in every possible resource we could to address this issue. The volunteerism within the community has been phenomenal.”

The Portage Diversion has taken some spring waters from the Assiniboine River and diverted the flow to Lake Manitoba.

Roseau River Anishinabe First Nation has been totally evacuated, as well as many homes near the Canada – United States border.

The cold weather is freezing the ice jams into place. Guyader has had 2 Amphibex Excavators operating on the river breaking up ice.

The Red River is right now 16.7 feet (5 metres) above spring ice conditions. The Red River Floodway gates cannot be opened with the current ice jams.

“If we operate now, we can get ice jamming going into the floodway, jamming up against the St. Mary’s bridge, as such, the floodway capacity would be reduced and would cause higher water levels in the city of Winnipeg.” said Steve Topping, Manitoba Water Stewardship spokesman

The floodway was constructed in 1968 following the 1950 flood to divert the overflow spring flooding waters of the Red River. The floodway has been widened the since the 1997 “flood of the century” and the expansion is expected to be completed this spring. As well Manitoba built permanent dikes around communities within the flood plain since the last two major floods..

The Red River waters will crest between the beginning of April to mid April, at which time also the weather should be warming up. Communities are bracing for higher water levels, more ice jams as well as melting snow in the warmer spring temperatures.

Wikinews interviews Steve Burke, U.S. Democratic Party presidential candidate

Sunday, December 13, 2015

This article is a featured article. It is considered one of the best works of the Wikinews community. See Wikinews:Featured articles for more information.

Macomb, New York Councilman Steve Burke took some time to speak with Wikinews about his campaign for the U.S. Democratic Party’s 2016 presidential nomination.

Burke, an insurance adjuster and farmer, was elected councilman in Brookhaven, New York in 1979. He left the town after being accused and found not guilty of bribery in the 1980s. Since 1987 he has served as Macomb councilman off-and-on and currently holds the post. From 1993 to 1996 and 1999 to 2002 he worked as chairman of the Democratic Party of St. Lawrence County, New York. Among his many political campaigns, Burke unsuccessfully sought the Democratic Party’s presidential nomination in 1992 and recently attempted to run for U.S. Congress in 2014 but too many of his ballot petition signatures were found invalid. Burke filed with the Federal Election Commission to run for president in the 2016 election on September 18, 2015 and has qualified for the first-in-the-nation New Hampshire Primary.

With Wikinews reporter William S. Saturn?, Burke discusses his political background, his 2016 presidential campaign, and his policy proposals.

Football Betting Strategies

Match result betting strategy

This is one of the most popular football strategies widely used by the bettors. Also the freshers prefer this strategy. And experienced bettors in fact, admit that it is a reliable strategy.

Match result betting strategy means that you need to predict the outcome of this or that match – the winning of the first or second team or even the draw. Bookmakers mark such outcomes as 1, 2 and X. Always remember, that in some events, the outcome can include extra time and in other – only normal time. Variants of this kind of football strategy are one team not lose (1X or X2), one team win (there won’t be a draw) – 12. Usually, odds are not very high and such bets are included into express bets.

Correct score betting

This kind of football betting strategies is very hard to predict but it attracts bettors because of “tasty” odds. If you tell precisely the correct score of the match, you will multiply the sum of your bet in 5-6 times of even more. It is possible to make several bets on different variants of the score of one and the same match and due to huge winning you will recover all your betting expenses and save quite a nice profit.

Half-time/full-time strategy

This is one of the most interesting football betting strategies. The bettors should predict, how will the first half of the match and the whole match finish. Widely spread are the bets where eventually stronger team is playing with a weak one. The high odds are given for the first half draw and the favorite’s winning of the whole match. It is due to the fact that thanks to the perfect physical performance, good luck and drive many underdogs can hold the draw during the first half but because the football team is weak it loses after the break. Freshers can use time-match – rather profitable and interesting kind of football betting strategies.

Over/Under Betting

This is one more widely spread football betting strategy variant. There is nothing difficult about it. You just need to predict how many goals the teams will score. The common total for the whole match is 2.5.

Now it is possible to find special programs that monitor the movements of totals from the moment of its appearing in bookmakers line and up to the sport event start. Having analyzed these variables, you will be able to make a right decision much more easier and it will help you to stand to gain.

Sending off football betting strategy

The variant of the football betting strategies that presupposes the analysis of teams discipline during the last matches is the possible sending off of the football player. This variant is ignored by the vast majority of the bettors, but absolutely wrongly. If you don’t make a mistake and a football player is sent off, you will be able to win three times as much you have put a bet

For this strategy the real football battles are usually chosen – classic grands fights (Barcelona-Real, Manchester United-Chelsea and others), where passions run high from the first and up to the last minute and where the possibility of sending off is very high.

If you decide to use this strategy for real, don’t forget to pay attention to the figure of a chief referee who can influence greatly on the match. Pay attention on the mean number of the red cards he had given in his career and the particular season, is he considered to be a strict referee or not, etc.

Emergency declared in US state of Washington, eight additional casualties, many still without power

Monday, December 18, 2006

A state of emergency was declared Sunday for the U.S. state of Washington by governor Christine Gregoire, as additional reports of storm-related casualties surfaced. The state National Guard has been deployed to aid in distributing supplies.

Thousands were still without power in the coastal and Puget Sound regions, though most urban areas were back with power as late as Sunday afternoon, and outages were mostly contained to rural and unincorporated areas. Puget Sound Energy reported that roughly 500,000 energy customers out of the 700,000 who lost power were back in service by Sunday evening. Seattle City Light, the city’s independent municipal utility, reported only 18,000 customers still without power as of Monday morning, down from a peak of 175,000.

Four additional deaths related to the post-storm power outage had been reported as of Monday, bringing the total number of casualties to eight. A man in Gig Harbor was electrocuted by a downed power line while walking his dog. Another man in Spanaway died when an unattended candle caused a house fire.

Two died from carbon monoxide poisoning in separate incidents related to use of combustion devices indoors. Roughly a hundred additional cases of non-fatal carbon monoxide poisoning were reported from people using generators or grills indoors. News radio stations and authorities warned the public to stay away from downed power lines and not to use grills indoors. Dr. Neil Hampson at Virginia Mason’s hyperbaric unit, where a number of victims were being treated, warned it could be “the worse case of carbon monoxide poisioning in the country”.

On Monday, four new carbon-monoxide deaths were reported in a family of five in Burien due to an indoor generator. In Canada, which had some damage from the week’s storms, two southern British Columbia carbon monoxide deaths were also reported. Despite continued warnings, hospitals are still seeing cases of carbon monoxide poisoning, including a family in w:Shoreline, Washington which was taken to the hospital after they reported symptoms due to their indoor grill. Neighbors of the Burien family suggested that noise concerns are leading people to place noisy generators indoors.

The massive power outage left many stores and gas stations unable to operate. Some businesses opened with the help of backup generators, conserving power by foregoing heat and refrigeration, exterior lighting, and half the interior lighting. Most stores had run out of “D” size batteries, the most common size for flashlights, as well as firelogs and other essentials. Gasoline shortages were reported throughout the area, with one man selling excess fuel for as high as $15 per gallon, over 5 times the average retail price.

The Red Cross set up shelters throughout King and other affected counties for those without power or food. Hotels reported no vacancies as whole families took shelter in powered hotels, especially in Seattle. Restaurants also reported brisk business as people sought out a hot cooked meal. Tons of perishable food were expected to have become unsafe after the prolonged outage disabled refrigerators and freezers both in homes and stores.

Many of those without power visited nearby friends and family living where power had been continued or restored, while others traveled out of the area to places that had not been affected. The widespread outage made long-distance traveling treacherous on some major routes, with roadway lighting, cellular towers, and services disabled by the outage.

Most major roadways which were closed during the storm were reopened on Friday. The 520 Floating Bridge over Lake Washington, a major conduit to the technology-rich Eastside, sustained minor damage. Amtrak, which had halted its Cascades service, resumed Saturday evening. Sea-Tac Airport resumed operations with a reduced flight load, after a transient power outage on Friday disabled the airport radar and caused all planes to be grounded until it was repaired.

Forex And Trading Timing

A lot of people talk attract and tease new Forex traders by appealing to their senses such as greed, fear and desire for increased leisure. These are easy marketing techniques but are very misleading when it comes to Forex trading. Admittedly, buying and selling currencies in the Forex market is so simple its merely a matter of clicking a mouse button. However, that is where the easy part stops. Everything in Forex is timing and that is what one must understand.

Forex robots appeal to new traders because of the ease of execution and overall lack of effort required. But, this is the lazy mans game and it will far too frequently end in disaster. The appeal to traders dislike of spending hours in front of the computer is why so many new systems tout Mega profits in just 30 minutes a day. It has been said many times in the past, but if this were true then everyone would be involved in trading. The fact is, it is not true and if you are able to spend just 30 minutes a day trading Forex and succeed that is as much due to fortune (aka luck) as it is skill.

I am not saying that you cannot make money in 30 minutes. On the contrary, many times you can get a trade that gives you 20, 30 even 50 pips or more in just a few two minute candles! It is possible to make fast money in the Forex. What you need to understand is, that there is no correlation between the time you spend trading (looking at your screen) and your profitability. What is critical is not how much time you spend but what you can and are able to do with that time.

I have found through my own experimentation that, indeed, the more hours I spend trading does not at all necessarily equate into greater profits in the Forex market. On the contrary, when I have traded a full day (say from UK open to noon EST 8 hours) I have found that more often than not, I tend to either give back much (if not all) of my profits I acquired early on or even go so far as end down on what would otherwise be a successful trading day had I stopped after just a couple hours. I feel that it is easy to become embroiled in longer trades with more and greater leverage when you trade long hours than if you confine yourself to a shorter trading period. When you give yourself a specific amount of time to trade knowing that you must complete the trade (win or lose) in say two hours time. Under these circumstances, one often makes more crisp and disciplined decisions.

I feel that this is true but it doesnt not mean that you can just spend half an hour and bank big profits. On the contrary, you should give yourself enough time to see a trade through to fruition. That can be anywhere from 2 mins to 4 hours. Although, I would caution staying in a trade for more than 2 hours unless it was a planned, longer term trade where your risk is contained in some way (either via a proper stop loss at BE, or if perhaps you are letting the second half of your trade run). One must know that the longer a trade is on the more unknown factors creep into play. Things change and risk increases the longer you are in any one single trade. I know a number of very experienced and successful traders who use time stops taking themselves out of a trade automatically when something does or doesnt occur within a given time frame (often just 10 or 20 minutes).

In the end, realize that ending the day in the black (even up 10 or 20 pips) is a huge achievement. If Forex trading is an augment to your current salary then steady as she goes. Never get greedy and trade to satisfy your psychological needs. Pay strict attention to your body and your mind as well as your trade as time progresses. Trading over and over will not necessarily yield more profit. Give yourself enough time to find a trade and then let that trade run its course keeping in mind the limits of both the market and your own stamina. Often, it is as good to take a 30 or 40 pip win and walk away from your trading station as it is to exult in your trading prowess after such a win and keep bearing down on the market for more. Give yourself time limits and parameters on your trading. Keep in mind the market cant be forced. During your trading time there will not always be good trades, so dont trade just for the sake of trading.
