Wikinews interviews Fred Karger, U.S. Republican Party presidential candidate

Saturday, April 28, 2012

United States political consultant and gay rights (LGBT) activist Fred Karger of California took some time to discuss his Republican Party presidential campaign with Wikinews reporter William Saturn. Karger holds the distinction as the first openly gay person to seek the presidential nomination of a major U.S. political party.

Before entering electoral politics, Karger worked as an adviser for such prominent Republicans and former U.S. Presidents Gerald Ford, Ronald Reagan and George H. W. Bush. Since retiring as an adviser in 2004, he has been involved in LGBT issues: opposing California Proposition 8, which banned same-sex marriage in the state; and leading investigations of such same-sex marriage opponents as the National Organization for Marriage (NOM) and the The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (The Mormon Church).

In 2010, Karger first announced his intentions to seek the Republican presidential nomination, but did not officially announce until March 2011. One of his early campaign goals was to participate in a GOP presidential debate, but was never invited due to polling thresholds. However, Karger argued that he did meet the requirement for an August debate, but was still excluded after the organizers deemed polls he cited as inadequate.

So far, Karger has appeared on four Republican primary ballots including Puerto Rico, where he was able to top Congressman Ron Paul, who, at the time was one of the four major candidates in the race. Karger will next appear on the ballots in California on June 5, and in Utah on June 26.

Karger brands himself as “a different kind of Republican” that wants to open the party to outsiders. He backs gay marriage, is pro-choice on abortion, and wants to lower the voting age. However, he also holds some traditional Republican views: he favors a strengthening of the private sector and believes the U.S. should be steadfast in its support for the nation of Israel.

In talking to Wikinews, Karger discusses his personal political background and activism, the 2012 presidential election and his GOP campaign, as well as his political views on both domestic and foreign affairs.

Essential Mobile App Testing Stages

Agile methods and CI/CD added a tendency to fast and frequent delivery of a code. The average duration of each sprint is ten days. Engineers have to write test cases for parts of code or particular functions to test them at the end of each sprint.

One of the ways to improve the development process is software testing.

The robust testing strategy facilitates an arduous development process and increases the chances to stand out among thousands of applications in stores.

The strategy depends on the type, size, and goals of a project.

Some companies choose mobile automation testing to speed up processes and increase performance. Such an approach requires a higher budget and more qualified staff.

But there are common stages of mobile app testing. They can help developers teams to create usability apps easily.

Let’s consider them.

Documentation and planning

Mobile app strategy should begin by determining the scope and main goals of testing. At this stage, teams create documents that contain the main statements and points of the testing process. Proper documentation is key to a robust and streamlined process that increases performance.

First, you should determine which functions and functionality parts of the mobile app you check. It facilitates choosing types and methods of testing. Usually, engineers test at first most frequently used functions(sign up, log in) and most crucial functions for business goals. But every project is unique and requires an individual approach and deep analysis.

There are some points to pay attention to during the planning mobile app testing strategy:

 • interaction with other apps
 • compatibility with multiple networks
 • compatibility with different platforms
 • scope web traffick that app can handle

Documentation fixes test procedures, requirements, who responsible for conducting tests, all test cases, and criteria for passes and failed tests. Through planning helps minimize risks and extra expenses.

Functional testing

Functional testing ensures that all main app functions and features are workable and give correct responses. The type of app, its business goals, and target audience determine the main functions. If it’s a social app, the main functions will be adding photos, sending messages, sharing posts, etc. For booking app, it is searching tickets and places, ordering, safe payment methods.

Besides core features, there are crucial test cases to consider:

 • app launches and works correctly every time
 • fields and buttons respond correctly
 • app behavior when something interrupts its work (turning off, incoming call other issues)
 • users get notifications and alerts about incorrect app work
 • after system crashes and errors app can resume at the last operation

Usability testing

Studies show that 79% of users reject to use a mobile app with bad usability and pick an app with a better user experience. Usability testing helps a company to ensure that every user’s interactions are smooth and convenient. Usability includes that users can achieve their goals within the app easily and app intuitive for understanding.

Usability testing can be performed in two ways: with usability experts and real users. Experts use deep analysis of an app and their knowledge to find usability issues. Testing with real users can provide insights into how the audience interacts with your app and what challenges they face. To facilitate mobile app testing with real users :

 • Set clear, strict, and detailed tasks (book a trip to Miami for two on one week). It helps to measure users’ experience effectively.
 • Don’t interrupt during interactions. Observe how people reach tasks. It may provide insights.
 • records users action to fix how they deal with tasks

Most common things that can impact usability:

 • buttons size are appropriate for convenient using
 • font size and color easy to read on different screens
 • last actions in an app restore after closing
 • user can cancel inappropriate or mistaken action

Security testing

Every mobile app collects and keeps private and sensitive information about a user. Besides, an insecure mobile app can be a loophole for cyber hackers that intrude into a user’s system and hack a smartphone overall.

Almost all apps refer to servers which vulnerable to the same types of cyberattacks as desktop and web apps. However, mobile apps have better security measures and a smaller attack surface. But there are principal security issues we should pay attention to:

 • Local data storage. Improper usage of APIs system by an app can cause data breaches and other security issues. For example, failures in local data storage can transfer private users’ data to other apps on a device.
 • Insecure networks. Smartphones connect with various networks regularly. It increases the risks to be hacked. Companies should ensure that their systems are protected and control what information they share with remote service endpoints.
 • Authorizations issues. Usually, the authorization process is associated with endpoints but there are security risks related to the mobile app side. Some authorization frameworks (such as OAuth2) transfer the authentication process to a side provider. It can lead to transferring the logic of a user’s authentication to other apps.

Wikinews interviews Bill Hammons, Unity Party of America presidential nominee

Friday, October 23, 2020

Wikinews accredited reporter William S. Saturn reached out to Unity Party of America presidential nominee Bill Hammons of Colorado to discuss Hammons’s 2020 campaign for President of the United States.

Hammons, a former Newsweek manager and owner of the website “Bill’s List”, founded the Unity Party in 2004 with supporters of General Wesley Clark’s unsuccessful campaign for the Democratic Party’s presidential nomination. The party, which describes itself as centrist, advocates in its constitution for, among other things, a balanced budget amendment, elimination of the federal income tax, tax deduction for health care costs, a global minimum wage for fair trade, term limits for Congress and judges, lowering the voting age, DC statehood, and expanded space exploration.

Hammons has grown the party with various campaigns for public office.  He ran for US Congress in 2008 and 2010, US Senate in 2014 and 2016, and for Governor of Colorado in 2018.  Last year, Hammons embarked on a presidential campaign and became the Unity Party’s first presidential nominee. Engineer Eric Bodenstab, the party’s 2018 nominee for Lieutenant Governor of Colorado was picked to be his running mate. Bodenstab spoke to Wikinews last August. The Hammons-Bodenstab ticket has qualified for ballot access in Colorado, Louisiana, and New Jersey.

With Wikinews, Hammons discusses his background, campaign, the COVID-19 pandemic, the U.S. Supreme Court, and Black Lives Matter, among other issues.

Participant claims drug trial gave him cancer

Sunday, August 6, 2006

A man who fell ill after participating in a drug trial at Northwick Park Hospital in north-west London earlier this year has revealed he has the early signs of an “aggressive” form of cancer.

David Oakley was one of six men who volunteered to take part in a trial of a drug intended to cure conditions like rheumatoid arthritis and leukemia in March. But after taking the drug, the thirty-five year-old suffered multiple organ failure and prominent inflammation.

Mr Oakley, who lives in west London, told today’s Mail on Sunday that doctors have informed him he has “definite early signs” of lymph cancer. He also fears he could develop other debilitating illnesses like rheumatoid arthritis, multiple sclerosis, chronic fatigue syndrome and lupus. He will now undergo tests to see what treatments will be required. “It’s very frightening,” he told the newspaper. “I’m trying not to be too down about the thought of having chemotherapy or that I might die.”

Mr Oakley was paid £2,000 for his involvement in the trial, and that money subsidised his marriage to wife Katrina in June. He now fears their hope of having children has been jeopardised as a result of his ill health. “Katrina and I had planned to start trying for children six months after getting married, but we can’t do that now. Everything is on hold.”

There is nothing to suggest that Mr Oakley’s cancer was triggered by the experiment. He is now seeking compensation from Parexel, the company which organised the drug trial. “Really, I’m just trying to do my bit and pointing out their mistake. If someone doesn’t point it out it could happen again and there’s no way I would like to see someone else go through what we’re going through right now.” Earlier this year, six men had to be admitted to an intensive care unit at the same hospital, in another Parexel drug trial which caused much upset.

Which Roof Rack System Will Fit My Car?}

Which Roof Rack System Will Fit My Car?

by

Charles Manfredi

It’s always a big question not just because it is a matter of a perfect fit, but also because it is usually accompanied with which is the best roof rack for my car. Read on to see how this knotty problem is resolved.

The way to finding the which roof rack system will fit your car as well as the best roof rack system for your car is to first check out the best roof rack system for any car and then see if they have a model that is specifically designed for your car.

That’s right! Each roof rack manufacturer makes minor variations in their roof rack design so a particular model will fit a particular brand and model of vehicle. For example, each roof rack manufacturer will have a roof rack specifically manufactured for (say) Landrover and for a specific model too. The way they do this (usually) by separately marketing roof rack accessories i.e. ‘shoes’ or ‘fit kit’. The bars of the roof rack remain the same but the shoes that anchor the bars to the car or vehicle vary slightly depending on the size and shape of each car or vehicle.

Which is why you first find the best roof racks in the market and then tell the salesperson which vehicle you need them for. They will outfit you with the roof rack and the appropriate fit kit for your vehicle. Once you’ve got that in hand, you can either fit the roof rack yourself or have it fitted at the nearest automotive garage.

Before you start checking for the best roof rack system, here’s a tip: look up your vehicle manual and read up on the section on roof racks specifically your vehicle’s weight carrying capacity on the roof. You need to do this because you can’t just dump loads and loads of stuff onto your new roof rack. Doing so will cause your vehicle roof to collapse after all, they don’t have a ‘pillar’ in the middle to hold up the roof. Your vehicle’s roof is supported by 4 rather flimsy pieces of metal at the 4 corners. So any excessive load placed in the middle of the roof rack will first cause the roof rack to collapse in the middle and in turn, the centre of the roof of your vehicle will also cave in looking rather ugly and be expensive to repair. So read up your vehicle manual before you head out to buy or order your first roof rack.

That said, roof racks typically distribute their load towards the outer frame of the vehicle’s roof. But again, weight specification apply so read up on your vehicle’s load bearing specifications first.

Here are two of the best Roof Racks Sydney systems in Australia and all of these can be view and purchased at https://www.barsnracks.com.au/:

Haze in South East Asia worsens

Friday, October 6, 2006

The acrid haze situation in Southeast Asia is worsening. Visibility has been severely reduced in neighboring countries and some schools have been closed due to the health hazard posed. The annual smoke season is caused by illegal slash and burn clearance of land in Indonesia, particularly the island of Borneo.

The haze has spread over 2,250 miles (3,600 kilometers) into neighboring countries such as Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand, and even drifting to Guam in the western Pacific.

Aviation has been severely impaired in Indonesia, where in certain areas, visibility is only a mere 200 to 300 meters. Helicopter service in Malaysia’s Sarawak state, a key mode of transportation there, has been halted due to the poor visibility. A Mandala Airlines Boeing 737-200 carrying a 110 people had overshot the runway at Tarakan airport in Kalimantan province in Indonesia. The aircraft came partly to rest in a nearby swamp. Visibility at the time was around 400 meters, 600 meters short of Indonesian landing safety regulations.

Schools in Thailand, and Indonesia have also been forced to closed, and look likely to stay closed well into next week.

Air pollution indices around the region have also registered a spike in poor air quality. Sarawak state’s index came in at 106-188 with 100-200 being unhealthy. In Malay peninsula, the air pollution index in five states came in at 101-116. In Singapore, the Pollution Standards Index registered between 80-130 with 81-100 in the moderate range and 101-200 in the unhealthy range.

Wikinews journalist Timlee90 reports:

The air quality here in Singapore is so bad that I could feel the dust in my mouth as I was walking on the streets today. The air constantly smells of burning wood and visibility is never more than a kilometer. Singaporeans I know are concerned about the deteriorating situation.

Timothy Low, a Singaporean who’s just finished his national service says that he is concerned about the situation, “I can’t run to exercise. People with lung related problems have difficulty breathing; It causes tearing also.” The government here has advised citizens to reduce vigorous activity, especially those with existing heart or lung conditions.

The Indonesian government has been criticized by environmentalist groups such as Greenpeace, which claims that the allowed conversion of forests into cropland is the cause of the problem. The also call on the Indonesian government to “investigate and hold liable plantation companies responsible for slash and burn clearing”.

The Indonesian government has responded to the criticism that it is doing all that it can do. “We don’t know when we can put out the fires but we are working tirelessly and have spent billions of rupiah (hundreds of thousands of dollars) in our efforts,” Forestry Minister Malem Sambat Kaban said. “As for complaints from neighbouring countries, there’s nothing else we can do. We don’t cause the fires deliberately.”

In 1997-98, the haze cost the Southeast Asian region an estimated US$9.0 billion by disrupting air travel and other business activities

Nokia appoints Microsoft Business Division Head as chief executive

Sunday, September 12, 2010

The Finnish communications corporation Nokia announced that its Head will change on September 21. The previous chief executive Olli-Pekka Kallasvuo will continue to chair in non-executive capacity. The head of Microsoft Business division Stephen Elop will take the position. It is the first time a non-Finn becomes Nokia president and chief executive.

The change follows Nokia’s fall in world markets. It includes a decrease in Nokia’s American market share to less than ten percent after failed negotiations with a number of leading American phone providers. An analyst at a market analyst company Canalys, Pete Cunningham, said, “Despite holding 38 percent market share of the smartphone market, Nokia’s failure to compete with the iPhone and high-tier Android devices, combined with its lack of progress in gaining significant traction in the United States, has led to press and investor dissatisfaction.”

Some commenters suggested that Nokia chose Mr. Elop partly because he is a Canadian, following criticism of American candidates by the Finnish press. However a Nokia spokesman rejected this, saying, “Nationality was not a selection criteria.”

Stephen Elop was president and CEO of the graphics and web-development software house Macromedia prior to its acquisition by Adobe in 2005. He then joined Microsoft as President of Microsoft’s Business Division in January, 2008. Commenting on his new role he said, “Nokia has a unique global position as well as a great brand upon which we can build. The Nokia slogan clearly states our key mission: Connecting People, which will acquire new dimensions as we build our portfolio of products, solutions and services.”

In the announcement the Chairman of the Nokia Board of Directors Jorma Ollila stressed an expected shift of focus from hardware to software. “His [Stephen Elop’s] strong software background and proven record in change management will be valuable assets as we press harder to complete the transformation of the company. We believe that Stephen will be able to drive both innovation and efficient execution of the company strategy in order to deliver increased value to our shareholders”.

Nokia stated in an official blog post, “Nokia is transitioning from a hardware manufacturer of mobile devices to a software and solutions business. …Stephen’s background in the software industry is one of his key strengths.”

Things You Ought To Know About Gold Initial Necklace

By Georgina Clay

Throughout the ages, people were religiously following the rituals of wearing different kinds of necklaces around their necks with various designs and often irrational styles. These designs were handed down from generation to generation, and while doing so, new styles and designs evolved to reflect the personality of the ages. The most noted is the initial necklace. Not only is this kind for decoration and expression, it also has more important uses. During those times, people are conscious enough about their identities; and having an initial necklace for such purpose is as important as expression and decoration.

Since then, time has again influenced the evolution of the initial necklace. Precious metals are being attached to the necklace to the point that these are being carved out from those special metals. The most adored among these is the gold initial necklace. It’s so enchanting that it made huge impacts to everybody everywhere.

The idea of having an initial necklace makes the item a person’s most personalized jewelry that he can possess when compared to other body beautification paraphernalia. Today, there are lots of varieties when it comes to the initial necklace’s design. The most eye-catching feature is the initial’s font variation. The initials are displayed in block, and look a lot sexier with its arched designs. Embellishments are a good addition as it enhances the beauty of the necklace when encrusted to the pendant. There is also another feature of having the initials engraved on flat plates with other gemstones on it.

So how do you buy a gold initial necklace? These days, you can find jewelries just about anywhere convenient. The initial necklace is a hot trend right now, which makes it available and easily accessible in different stores all over, like specialty booths around local shopping malls. A good example is those elegant gold necklaces found when shopping upscale. There are also less-expensive necklaces which give off a hippy look. Online, the initial necklace is a big hit too. These online stores abound and you have lots of choices to choose from. They cater to different kinds of personalities and different occasions.

Now that you have one, how do you care for it? Taking good care of your initial necklace will obviously prevent it from getting damaged and keeps it looking new all the time. One of the basic and sensible rule is to store it separately from other jewelries. For sure you will be having a hard time untangling these things. One of the best ways to store it effectively is to simply have it hanged with its own hook away from others. Another effective way is to use a jewelry roll. Gold necklaces can always be cleaned in any regular jewelry cleaner. Take note that using the ultrasonic cleaner will have an effect on the chains especially those thin chains. It gets agitated which will result to tangling. In this case, have the pendants cleaned separately.

Your initial necklace is great when you are trying to make a fashion statement and express out your personality. It’s like telling the whole world who you are with that initial. No wonder people around you get attracted, wanting to know your name as they are curious about what that means.

Australia Votes 2007: Liberals promise personal income tax cuts

Tuesday, October 16, 2007

With the election campaign just beginning, Australian Prime Minister John Howard has promised AU$34 billion in personal income tax cuts over the next three years. That is on top of $31.5 billion announced in May, and $36.7 billion announced in 2006.

The new tax cuts are based on new projections for growth in the Australian economy. The Treasury estimates that the economy will expand by 4.25% in the 12 months to June 2008, up from growth of 3.75% predicted in May.

The Government has challenged the Labor opposition to announce their tax policy immediately.

“The biggest, boldest tax plan that we’ve seen in a long time is presented yesterday, it deals with participation, competitiveness, building capacity in the Australian economy, and what does Kevin Rudd say? Nothing,” treasurer Peter Costello said. “He better have an answer today.”

Costello described the government tax policy as “very responsible” and said Rudd was a “Nothing Man” because he has not revealed Labor’s tax policy.

The Shadow Treasurer, Wayne Swan, replied “The only responsible course of action here is to study the detail. We’ve said we’ll put out all our policies well before the election and we’ll do that”.

“But in terms of what the Government’s put forward, we will take our time to study the detail. That’s the only responsible and reasonable thing to do.”

Economists from Access Economics, the ANZ Bank, HSBC and Macquarie Bank noted that the tax cuts will boost demand at a time when the Reserve Bank is trying to slow the economy. The Reserve Bank has been raising interest rates to keep the inflation rate within its target range. Households with substantial mortgages could end up worse off.

Rudd has said the Opposition will reveal its tax policy in its own time – mimicking John Howard’s approach when he was Opposition Leader in 1996.
