US Congresswoman Jackie Speier comments about Obamacare, Paralympics

Saturday, November 9, 2013

With the 2014 Winter Paralympics set for March, Wikinews sought comment from U.S. Representative Jackie Speier, who serves California’s 14th congressional district about the event and how current U.S. policies impact people with disabilities. Elected to the U.S. House in 2008, she serves on the Committee on Oversight and Government Reform and the House Armed Services Committee. For the first time ever, the Paralympics will be broadcast live in the U.S. on network television.

((Wikinews)) : Will “Obamacare” have a positive or negative impact on the lives of people with disabilities?

Jackie Speier: By-and-large the Affordable Care Act will have a significant and lasting beneficial impact on persons with disabilities […] Most importantly, pre-existing conditions will no longer prevent persons with disabilities from obtaining health insurance. Lifetime limits on medical expenses will be removed and preventive services will be free. All of these provisions of the law create health insurance that is highly supportive of good health outcomes for everyone, but in particular for those who have a disability.

((WN)) : Are there any Paralympic athletes or elite athletes with disabilities from your district that people should know more about?

Jackie Speier: There are currently two Paralympic athletes who train or live in my district that people will definitely hear more about in the coming years. One is a young woman named Allie Hyatt who trains in Judo with Willy Cahill, [whom] I have also trained with. Allie, who is visually impaired and just 15, has already won numerous awards and will participate in the Youth Olympic Games next year. She is sure to be a force in the Judo world for many, many years. Hyatt lives in San Francisco and Cahill is the founder and CEO of the Blind Judo Foundation.

Another great athlete is Mohamend Lahna who is training for the Rio Olympics in 2016 for the paratriathlon,” Speier continued. “He is from Morocco originally but lives now in San Mateo and trains daily at the College of San Mateo. He runs marathons with a prosthetic leg and has his sights set on winning several medals atworld and Olympic events in the future. Lahna has proximal femoral focal deficiency (PFFD), a birth defect that affects the hip and pelvis. He is married and has a 1-year-old child.

Wikinews also sought comment from other members of Congress, including John K. Delaney, Mike Honda, Kyrsten Sinema, Eric Swalwell, Raúl M. Grijalva and Ann Kirkpatrick but at publication time, had received no response.

Chemical plant fire decimates Danvers, Massachusetts neighboorhood

Wednesday, November 22, 2006

According to outgoing Massachusetts governor Mitt Romney, an explosion that was “equivalent to a 2,000 lb. bomb” and registered 0.5 on the Richter scale decimated an area of Danvers and is also a “Thanksgiving miracle.”

The explosion occurred around 2:45 am EST, this morning in the Danversport area of Danvers, Massachusetts at the plant for solvent and ink manufacturer, CAI Inc. The explosion, which was caught on security camera and was heard up to over 25-50 miles away in southern Maine and New Hampshire.

The explosion damaged over 90 homes, blowing out windows and knocking some houses off their foundations. Officials believe that some of the more extensively damaged houses will have to be leveled and rebuilt. Some of the buildings damaged included a bakery, boats at a close by marina and the New England Home for the Deaf, an assisted-living facility for people who are deaf or deafblind and elderly residents requiring constant care. “These people are extremely fragile,” said state Rep. Ted Speliotis, D-Danvers, whose district includes the affected area. “Many of them have Alzheimer’s and other illnesses. It’s clear they can’t stay here long, but it’s clear they won’t be able to return for quite a while.”

Danvers Fire Chief James P. Tutko toured the area by helicopter and said many residents would be kept from their homes for the foreseeable future. “It looks like a war zone, that’s the only thing I can say,” Tutko said. When asked about the loss of no life at all, he responded “Somebody out there likes us.” Finally, he said that finding out the cause of the explosion would take days.

Outgoing governor Mitt Romney toured the area and said the explosion was a “Thanksgiving miracle” as the explosion was “equivalent to a 2,000 lb bomb going off in a residential neighborhood,” and that no one was killed and only about 10 people suffered only minor injuries in area that included over 300 residents. Residents of the area have been evacuated to the Danvers High School where temporary shelter has been set up by the American Red Cross of Massachusetts Bay. Donations are being taken for residents affected by the explosion. Residents are also being told to start filing insurance claims right away and to keep track of their expenses for items bought.

There were minor environmental concerns due to water runoff of chemicals. According the Environmental Protection Agency‘s on-scene coordinator Mike Nalipinski, preliminary tests showed low levels of toluene, a solvent, but said it was nothing of significance. Water runoff from the water used by firefighters left a purple sheen on the river and tests were being conducted. However, the water is not a local drinking water supply and the chemical evaporates quickly. Chief Tutko said there was no risk of toxic fumes getting into the air.

An Eastern Propane facility was also located near the area, however, it was not the source of the explosion. A spokesman for the company said that although the property suffered some minor damage, their tanks are secure.

According to WHDH television, a person who answered the telephone at CAI’s Georgetown, Massachusetts headquarters refused comment, and a telephone message left at the company president’s home was not immediately returned.

Israeli barrage of Gaza continues with strike on PM’s office

Sunday, July 2, 2006

Israel has continued its barrage of the Gaza Strip with an attack by a helicopter gunship on the office of the Palestinian prime minister. The attack, which left the building ablaze, injured three Palestinian security guards and was described by the prime minister, Ismail Haniya, as senseless. “This is the policy of the jungle and arrogance,” Haniya told Reuters. “They have targeted a symbol for the Palestinian people.”

Israel claims the attack on Gaza, codenamed Operation Summer Rains, is to pressure the Palestinian government into freeing Cpl. Gilad Shalit, the Israeli tank gunner Israel describes as having been kidnapped by Palestinian militants on Monday.

Other Israeli strikes on Saturday night hit a school in Gaza City and Hamas facilities in the town of Jabalia in the north of the strip where one 34-year-old Hamas operative was killed and another wounded.

Thousands of jobs to go at Corus

Sunday, January 25, 2009

International steel conglomerate Corus Group is to axe 3,500 jobs worldwide.

Up to 2,000 jobs are to be lost in the former British Steel plants in the United Kingdom. Owner Tata Steel employs 42,000 people worldwide, with 24,000 being in the UK. Corus did not comment on the report so far, but a union official told BBC News that the company would be making an announcement at 0930 UTC on Monday. The cuts would be part of long term restructuring plans made by soon to depart CEO Philippe Varin, which have been accelerated by the worldwide downturn.

Tata Steel’s sister company Tata Motors is said by The Sunday Times to be considering 1,500 job losses at the UK’s Jaguar Land Rover car manufacturer. It is not thought that any Corus plants in the UK will close outright.

Corus was formed from the merger of British Steel and the Dutch steelmaker Hoogovens, creating the ninth largest steel company in the world and the second largest in the European Union. The merger was uncomfortable and the company suffered severe financial problems in 2003. It later recovered and was bought by India’s Tata two years ago.

Loads Of Loaders Loaders Explained}

Submitted by: Schaffer Loaders

Below broad definitions of various loader types are outlined.

Some of these definitions are interchangeable and often just relate to the size loader you are talking about. For example articulated loader is the generic term for any articulated loader and can include mini loader, mini digger, front end loader, wheel loader and can even include some backhoe loaders which are articulated.

ARTICULATED LOADER

An articulated loader has an articulation joint in the middle. The loader is made from two chassis joined together, as opposed to a rigid bodied machine, like a car or skid steer. An articulated loader by definition has articulated steering, and covers all loaders with articulated steering from articulated mini loaders weighing in at just 1500kg, to the worlds largest wheel loaders.

Articulated loaders have a lot of benefits compared to rigid bodied machines and any operator will quickly tell you this.

MINI LOADER and MINI DIGGERS

A mini loader is generally classified as a loader with a weight under 2000kg. The smallest mini loaders are stand on skid steer type loaders, although relatively recently some companies have released stand on mini articulated loaders. The stand on mini loaders are very limited in terms of capacity and size, as operators arent given a high comfort level as they have to stand up all day which isnt conducive to a productive work life. The mini stand on loaders are suited to small jobs requiring the operator to jump on and off frequently.

The next step up in mini skid steer loaders are mini bobcat style loaders which have a seated operating position. These mini skid steers allow the operator to perform tight access work, and the comfort level increases as at least the operator has a seat to sit on throughout the day.

The biggest recent trend however is towards articulated mini loaders which are now rapidly becoming commonplace on construction sites across the world. They have a seat to operate from , great all round visibility as the operator sits on top of the machine and are able to handle more weight as the wheel base is significantly longer than a mini skid steer. An articulated loader of the same weight can outperform a mini skid steer in lift capacity as a longer wheel base gives more leverage at the tool frame.

The articulated mini loaders are also very comfortable to drive if an oscillating articulation joint is incorporated between the two chassis. The oscillating articulation joint allows the loaders wheels to conform to the rough terrain so each bump isnt going through to the operators seat, basically it acts a type of suspension. Articulated mini loaders are now highly maneuverable so give the advantages of a longer wheel base, but are still able to work in restrictive areas, the same as a mini skid steer. The articulated mini loader also has the massive advantage of low ground disturbance and very minimal tyre wear.

Being able to run as many tools as possible is critical with any mini loader and hence all mini loaders either articulated or skid steer, will have auxiliary output as standard. to be able to run tools.

FRONT END LOADER

The term front end loader can refer to any loader with a bucket attached at the front. However it is just about always referred to as an articulated loader and not a skid steer as front end loaders were traditionally used for the heavy duty front end work. The mast of a front end loader is fixed horizontally, as opposed to a telescopic loader, which can telescope out to gain more reach (described below). An articulated mini-loader, articulated loader and wheel loader are all a type of front end loader. What weight class actually contributes a front end loader category is quite arbitrary, but some manufacturers will designate articulated loaders in the operating weight 2 tonnes to 5 tonnes as front end loaders, however any size machine can often be called a front end loader.

The term front end loader is also used for tractor style front end loaders. These are a separate mast and bucket attached to the front end of a tractor, often after purchase, to enable it to do some work at the front of the machine. Tractors however are built for towing as the main weight of the machine, the engine, is placed far forward to give traction when towing and so is not ideal for heavy duty front end loader work.

All articulated front end loaders, articulated wheel loaders and all articulated mini loaders built by major manufactures have the seating position mounted on the rear chassis section. This is important as it allows much greater performance to be achieved quickly by the operator. When the operator sits on the rear of the loader, reversing is the same as when reversing a car, however when you sit on the front of the loader every time you need to reverse the loader it is like having a swinging trailer behind you. Most operators can eventually get used to this operating position, but having to think every time when reversing hinders productivity, even with very experienced operators. This is particularly noticeable when working in confined areas as the tail swings out when attempting to reverse and must be controlled. This is the reason that all major world manufacturers now make the operator sit at the rear of the machine.

WHEEL LOADER

A wheel loader is generally regarded as a large articulated loader, however one of Australias industry bibles Earthmover and Civil Contractor Plant Specs classifies all articulated loaders as wheel loaders and further categorizes them by operating horsepower. It is only articulated steering that gives the ability for such a large machine to operate efficiently, particularly over around the 8 tonne mark. Wheel loaders are often regarded as articulated loaders over 5 tonnes and continue up to the largest loaders in the word which are over 200 tonnes.

The larger the wheel loader, the greater the tendency for the loader to become a dedicated machine and not have a quick attach too frame. This is because wheel loaders are often used for production and so versatility is not required. Purpose built loaders can often be more efficient for a single job than a general purpose machine, by bringing in the hitch closer to the front axle of the loader, so capacity and stability is maximized.

FRONT AXLE STEERED LOADER

Front axle steered loaders are rigid bodied loaders, with the same steering principle as a car, the front wheels turn to steer the loader. This group covers the backhoe loaders, as explained below and all tractors. Tractors, although they can be fitted with a front end loader attachment to do light duty work, arent designed from the ground up for industrial earthmoving but are instead designed for towing as they have the majority of their weight mounted far forward so weight is still maintained on the front wheels when towing heavy implements.

BACKHOE LOADER

Backhoe loaders are a front end loader with a permanently mounted backhoe, which is an excavator arm designed for trenching. Most manufacturers offer backhoes as a rigid bodied loader for extra stability when trenching, however a couple of articulated backhoes do exist. Backhoes in recent years have fallen out of favour as the purpose build excavator will always outperform them on a job site. The backhoe is also a compromise as a front end loader as an articulated loader will always outperform a rigid bodied loader due to the advantages of articulated steering.

A new entry into this backhoe market that crosses some traditional boundaries is the release of the front mounted excavator hoe. This allows the front end loader operator to add a front mounted hoe to perform some excavation work. The performance isnt the same as a purpose built excavator, but allows extra utilization on a job site and doesnt require trucking a new machine in just to finish off routine excavation tasks. The front hoe is particularly suited to articulated loaders as the operator needs to just turn the steering wheel slightly to dump the load out of the front hoe, and then to turn back again to start excavating again. Skid steers on the other hand start to scrub a lot of earth out from under the skid steer wheels when turning on the spot to dump after excavating a scoop of earth.

TELESCOPIC LOADER

A front end loader has a fixed mast the mast cant extend horizontally, only up and down. A telescopic loader on the other hand can extend out horizontally. The extra reach of a telescopic loader can be advantageous in certain situations but must be used with caution as the further the mast is extended, the lower the capacity if the loader as the centre of gravity shifts out. For true earthmoving work or materials handling with a bucket, an articulated loader or one of the modern articulated telescopic loaders is always the machine of choice due to superior all round visibility compared to rigid bodied telehandlers.

SKIDSTEER

A skidsteer is a rigid bodied (single chassis) loader, designed to skid on their wheels or tracks to turn sharply, and can even turn on the spot if necessary. Articulated front end loaders on the other hand use the articulation joint between the front and rear chassis to steer the loader in the required direction, so they cannot turn on the spot. Modern articulated loader manufacturers now make articulated loaders highly manoeverable and give numerous benefits over skidsteers so give the extra benefit of low tyre wear in comparison to a skidsteer. For a skidsteer to turn so sharply, one side of wheels/tracks locks up allowing the wheels on the other side to skid on themselves, allowing a very sharp turn. The downside here is that the tyres may be worn out very quickly as a result. The ground also gets ripped apart, often doing a lot of damage to the surface, even on asphalt. Visibility is also quite bad, as the driver is confined in a small metal cabin with the mast attached either side of the cabin, further restricting visibility. The driver sits very low to the ground with the engine behind the operator.

Skidsteers are broken up into two main groups stand on skid steers, and larger skid steers. All sizes of skid steers are available with conventional tyres or with tracks. Tracks give more grip in boggy conditions, however maintenance costs are incredibly high compared to wheeled skidsteers. The cost isnt just the tracks themselves, but also the complex lug and wheel assembly that turn the tracks. Fuel consumption is also significantly higher in a tracked loader as the rolling resistance of a track is much higher than wheels.

FORKLIFT

A forklift is an industrial vehicle with a hydraulically operated vertical mast and pallet forks. Forklifts are a common sight in warehouses worldwide and generally dont have the capability to operate off hard surfaces unless they are specifically built for an all terrain capability. The pallet forks or tines are inserted under loads to lift, stack and move them. Typically a forklift is not designed to have many other tools or attachments.

Forklifts are purpose built and are able to lift larger loads that a comparable front end loader with a fork attachment. The vertical mast of the forklift is mounted much closer to the chassis of the machine, so the centre of gravity of the load is closer which allows the forklift to always outperform a front end loader of comparable weight. Some operators however still prefer to use a front end loader as the extra reach allows them to unload a truck from one side. A new entry into this market is the Schaffer articulated forklift, it combines the all terrain capability of a strong earthmoving front end loader with the capacity of an industrial forklift.

Bank of England governor warns housing market is biggest threat to UK economy

Sunday, May 18, 2014

The governor of the Bank of England, Mark Carney, has warned that the state of the housing market in the United Kingdom is the current biggest domestic threat to the country’s economy, due to lack of house building, and regulatory issues.

In an interview to be aired on Sky News today, he said the housing market is the “biggest risk” to the economy and has “deep, deep structural problems”. Of house building he said: “There are not sufficient houses built in the UK. To go back to Canada, there are half as many people in Canada as in the UK, twice as many houses are built every year in Canada as in the UK and we can’t influence that.”

“We’re not going to build a single house at the Bank of England. We can’t influence that. What we can influence […] is whether the banks are strong enough. Do they have enough capital against risk in the housing market?”

Carney also said the Bank of England would look into the procedures used to issue loans and mortgages to see if they were being granted appropriately: “We’d be concerned if there was a rapid increase in high loan-to-value mortgages across the banks. We’ve seen that creeping up and it’s something we’re watching closely.”

Kris Hopkins responded to Carney on behalf of the government, saying the government “inherited a broken housing market, but our efforts to fix it are working”. “We’ve scrapped the failed top-down planning system, built over 170,000 affordable homes and released more surplus brownfield sites for new housing. We’ve also helped homebuyers get on the housing ladder, because if people can buy homes builders will build them. Housebuilding is now at its highest level since 2007 and climbing. Last year councils gave permission for almost 200,000 new homes under the locally-led planning system and more than 1,000 communities have swiftly taken up neighbourhood planning. It’s clear evidence the government’s long-term economic plan is working.”

Earlier this month, the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development called on the UK government to “tighten” access to the ‘Help to Buy’ scheme introduced by George Osborne and the coalition government in 2013. ‘Help to Buy’ has also recently been criticised by three former Chancellors of the Exchequer — the Conservatives Norman Lamont and Nigel Lawson, and former Labour Chancellor Alistair Darling. Darling said: “Unless supply can be increased substantially, we will exacerbate that situation with schemes like Help to Buy.”

State Farm Insurance allegedly destroying papers

Tuesday, April 11, 2006

Zach Scruggs, a lawyer for United States Senator Trent Lott, says that State Farm Insurance Company is destroying records related to claims for damage from Hurricane Katrina.

The records allegedly contain information saying that State Farm fraudulently denied insurance claims made by its policy holders, including Lott, that had homes there were damaged or destroyed when Hurricane Katrina came ashore on the Gulf Coast.

Scruggs said that Lott has “good faith belief” that many employees of the insurance company in Biloxi, Mississippi are destroying engineer’s reports that were inconclusive as to whether or not water or wind was the main cause of damage to the buildings affected by the hurricane.

Lott is among thousands of home and/or business owners who had their property damaged or destroyed during the hurricane and had their claims denied because State Farm claimed that their policies don’t cover damage caused by floods or water that was driven by the wind.

State Farm has not issued a statement on the matter so far.

Sweden’s Crown Princess marries long-time boyfriend

Monday, June 21, 2010

Sweden’s first royal wedding since 1976 took place Saturday when Crown Princess Victoria, 32, married her long-time boyfriend and former personal trainer, Daniel Westling, 36. The ceremony took place at Stockholm Cathedral.

Over 1,200 guests, including many rulers, politicians, royals and other dignitaries from across the world, attended the wedding, which cost an estimated 20 million Swedish kronor. Victoria wore a wedding dress with five-metre long train designed by Pär Engsheden. She wore the same crown that her mother, Queen Silvia, wore on her wedding day 34 years previously, also on June 19. Victoria’s father, King Carl XVI Gustaf, walked Victoria down the aisle, which was deemed untraditional by many. In Sweden, the bride and groom usually walk down the aisle together, emphasising the country’s views on equality. Victoria met with Daniel half-way to the altar, where they exchanged brief kisses, and, to the sounds of the wedding march, made their way to the the silver altar. She was followed by ten bridesmaids. The couple both had tears in their eyes as they said their vows, and apart from fumbling when they exchanged rings, the ceremony went smoothly.

Following the ceremony, the couple headed a fast-paced procession through central Stockholm on a horse-drawn carriage, flanked by police and security. Up to 500,000 people are thought to have lined the streets. They then boarded the Vasaorden, the same royal barge Victoria’s parents used in their wedding, and traveled through Stockholm’s waters, accompanied by flyover of 18 fighter jets near the end of the procession. A wedding banquet followed in the in the Hall of State of the Royal Palace.

Controversy has surrounded the engagement and wedding between the Crown Princess and Westling, a “commoner”. Victoria met Westling as she was recovering from bulemia in 2002. He owned a chain of gymnasiums and was brought in to help bring Victoria back to full health. Westling was raised in a middle-class family in Ockelbo, in central Sweden. His father managed a social services centre, and his mother worked in a post office. When the relationship was made public, Westling was mocked as an outsider and the king was reportedly horrified at the thought of his daughter marrying a “commoner”, even though he did so when he married Silvia. Last year, Westling underwent transplant surgery for a congenital kidney disorder. The Swedish public have been assured that he will be able to have children and that his illness will not be passed on to his offspring.

Westling underwent years of training to prepare for his new role in the royal family, including lessons in etiquette, elocution, and multi-lingual small talk; and a makeover that saw his hair being cropped short, and his plain-looking glasses and clothes being replaced by designer-wear.

Upon marrying the Crown Princess, Westling took his wife’s ducal title and is granted the style “His Royal Highness”. He is now known as HRH Prince Daniel, Duke of Västergötland. He also has his own coat-of-arms and monogram. When Victoria assumes the throne and becomes Queen, Daniel will not become King, but assume a supportive role, similar to that of Prince Phillip, the husband of the United Kingdom’s Queen Elizabeth II.
