Haze in South East Asia worsens

Friday, October 6, 2006

The acrid haze situation in Southeast Asia is worsening. Visibility has been severely reduced in neighboring countries and some schools have been closed due to the health hazard posed. The annual smoke season is caused by illegal slash and burn clearance of land in Indonesia, particularly the island of Borneo.

The haze has spread over 2,250 miles (3,600 kilometers) into neighboring countries such as Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand, and even drifting to Guam in the western Pacific.

Aviation has been severely impaired in Indonesia, where in certain areas, visibility is only a mere 200 to 300 meters. Helicopter service in Malaysia’s Sarawak state, a key mode of transportation there, has been halted due to the poor visibility. A Mandala Airlines Boeing 737-200 carrying a 110 people had overshot the runway at Tarakan airport in Kalimantan province in Indonesia. The aircraft came partly to rest in a nearby swamp. Visibility at the time was around 400 meters, 600 meters short of Indonesian landing safety regulations.

Schools in Thailand, and Indonesia have also been forced to closed, and look likely to stay closed well into next week.

Air pollution indices around the region have also registered a spike in poor air quality. Sarawak state’s index came in at 106-188 with 100-200 being unhealthy. In Malay peninsula, the air pollution index in five states came in at 101-116. In Singapore, the Pollution Standards Index registered between 80-130 with 81-100 in the moderate range and 101-200 in the unhealthy range.

Wikinews journalist Timlee90 reports:

The air quality here in Singapore is so bad that I could feel the dust in my mouth as I was walking on the streets today. The air constantly smells of burning wood and visibility is never more than a kilometer. Singaporeans I know are concerned about the deteriorating situation.

Timothy Low, a Singaporean who’s just finished his national service says that he is concerned about the situation, “I can’t run to exercise. People with lung related problems have difficulty breathing; It causes tearing also.” The government here has advised citizens to reduce vigorous activity, especially those with existing heart or lung conditions.

The Indonesian government has been criticized by environmentalist groups such as Greenpeace, which claims that the allowed conversion of forests into cropland is the cause of the problem. The also call on the Indonesian government to “investigate and hold liable plantation companies responsible for slash and burn clearing”.

The Indonesian government has responded to the criticism that it is doing all that it can do. “We don’t know when we can put out the fires but we are working tirelessly and have spent billions of rupiah (hundreds of thousands of dollars) in our efforts,” Forestry Minister Malem Sambat Kaban said. “As for complaints from neighbouring countries, there’s nothing else we can do. We don’t cause the fires deliberately.”

In 1997-98, the haze cost the Southeast Asian region an estimated US$9.0 billion by disrupting air travel and other business activities

Nokia appoints Microsoft Business Division Head as chief executive

Sunday, September 12, 2010

The Finnish communications corporation Nokia announced that its Head will change on September 21. The previous chief executive Olli-Pekka Kallasvuo will continue to chair in non-executive capacity. The head of Microsoft Business division Stephen Elop will take the position. It is the first time a non-Finn becomes Nokia president and chief executive.

The change follows Nokia’s fall in world markets. It includes a decrease in Nokia’s American market share to less than ten percent after failed negotiations with a number of leading American phone providers. An analyst at a market analyst company Canalys, Pete Cunningham, said, “Despite holding 38 percent market share of the smartphone market, Nokia’s failure to compete with the iPhone and high-tier Android devices, combined with its lack of progress in gaining significant traction in the United States, has led to press and investor dissatisfaction.”

Some commenters suggested that Nokia chose Mr. Elop partly because he is a Canadian, following criticism of American candidates by the Finnish press. However a Nokia spokesman rejected this, saying, “Nationality was not a selection criteria.”

Stephen Elop was president and CEO of the graphics and web-development software house Macromedia prior to its acquisition by Adobe in 2005. He then joined Microsoft as President of Microsoft’s Business Division in January, 2008. Commenting on his new role he said, “Nokia has a unique global position as well as a great brand upon which we can build. The Nokia slogan clearly states our key mission: Connecting People, which will acquire new dimensions as we build our portfolio of products, solutions and services.”

In the announcement the Chairman of the Nokia Board of Directors Jorma Ollila stressed an expected shift of focus from hardware to software. “His [Stephen Elop’s] strong software background and proven record in change management will be valuable assets as we press harder to complete the transformation of the company. We believe that Stephen will be able to drive both innovation and efficient execution of the company strategy in order to deliver increased value to our shareholders”.

Nokia stated in an official blog post, “Nokia is transitioning from a hardware manufacturer of mobile devices to a software and solutions business. …Stephen’s background in the software industry is one of his key strengths.”

Things You Ought To Know About Gold Initial Necklace

By Georgina Clay

Throughout the ages, people were religiously following the rituals of wearing different kinds of necklaces around their necks with various designs and often irrational styles. These designs were handed down from generation to generation, and while doing so, new styles and designs evolved to reflect the personality of the ages. The most noted is the initial necklace. Not only is this kind for decoration and expression, it also has more important uses. During those times, people are conscious enough about their identities; and having an initial necklace for such purpose is as important as expression and decoration.

Since then, time has again influenced the evolution of the initial necklace. Precious metals are being attached to the necklace to the point that these are being carved out from those special metals. The most adored among these is the gold initial necklace. It’s so enchanting that it made huge impacts to everybody everywhere.

The idea of having an initial necklace makes the item a person’s most personalized jewelry that he can possess when compared to other body beautification paraphernalia. Today, there are lots of varieties when it comes to the initial necklace’s design. The most eye-catching feature is the initial’s font variation. The initials are displayed in block, and look a lot sexier with its arched designs. Embellishments are a good addition as it enhances the beauty of the necklace when encrusted to the pendant. There is also another feature of having the initials engraved on flat plates with other gemstones on it.

So how do you buy a gold initial necklace? These days, you can find jewelries just about anywhere convenient. The initial necklace is a hot trend right now, which makes it available and easily accessible in different stores all over, like specialty booths around local shopping malls. A good example is those elegant gold necklaces found when shopping upscale. There are also less-expensive necklaces which give off a hippy look. Online, the initial necklace is a big hit too. These online stores abound and you have lots of choices to choose from. They cater to different kinds of personalities and different occasions.

Now that you have one, how do you care for it? Taking good care of your initial necklace will obviously prevent it from getting damaged and keeps it looking new all the time. One of the basic and sensible rule is to store it separately from other jewelries. For sure you will be having a hard time untangling these things. One of the best ways to store it effectively is to simply have it hanged with its own hook away from others. Another effective way is to use a jewelry roll. Gold necklaces can always be cleaned in any regular jewelry cleaner. Take note that using the ultrasonic cleaner will have an effect on the chains especially those thin chains. It gets agitated which will result to tangling. In this case, have the pendants cleaned separately.

Your initial necklace is great when you are trying to make a fashion statement and express out your personality. It’s like telling the whole world who you are with that initial. No wonder people around you get attracted, wanting to know your name as they are curious about what that means.

Australia Votes 2007: Liberals promise personal income tax cuts

Tuesday, October 16, 2007

With the election campaign just beginning, Australian Prime Minister John Howard has promised AU$34 billion in personal income tax cuts over the next three years. That is on top of $31.5 billion announced in May, and $36.7 billion announced in 2006.

The new tax cuts are based on new projections for growth in the Australian economy. The Treasury estimates that the economy will expand by 4.25% in the 12 months to June 2008, up from growth of 3.75% predicted in May.

The Government has challenged the Labor opposition to announce their tax policy immediately.

“The biggest, boldest tax plan that we’ve seen in a long time is presented yesterday, it deals with participation, competitiveness, building capacity in the Australian economy, and what does Kevin Rudd say? Nothing,” treasurer Peter Costello said. “He better have an answer today.”

Costello described the government tax policy as “very responsible” and said Rudd was a “Nothing Man” because he has not revealed Labor’s tax policy.

The Shadow Treasurer, Wayne Swan, replied “The only responsible course of action here is to study the detail. We’ve said we’ll put out all our policies well before the election and we’ll do that”.

“But in terms of what the Government’s put forward, we will take our time to study the detail. That’s the only responsible and reasonable thing to do.”

Economists from Access Economics, the ANZ Bank, HSBC and Macquarie Bank noted that the tax cuts will boost demand at a time when the Reserve Bank is trying to slow the economy. The Reserve Bank has been raising interest rates to keep the inflation rate within its target range. Households with substantial mortgages could end up worse off.

Rudd has said the Opposition will reveal its tax policy in its own time – mimicking John Howard’s approach when he was Opposition Leader in 1996.

Sydney Opera House ‘No War’ activists face court for paint cans

Tuesday, January 3, 2006

Two activists convicted for painting the words “NO WAR” in five-metre-high red letters on the highest sail of Sydney Opera House in March 2003, are facing court action again to prevent them from auctioning the equipment used to paint the controversial sign.

Dr Will Saunders and David Burgess were sentenced to nine months periodic detention and ordered to pay the Opera House Trust $151,000 for malicious damage to the building on March 18, 2003.

The pair spent six months in jail for painting the slogan on one of the sails of the Opera House on the eve of the invasion of Iraq. The protesters say they wish to auction the equipment for humanitarian causes in Iraq.

Police confiscated the paint can and two brushes used in the incident and have now applied for a court order to have the can and brushes destroyed. They are saying such an auction would contravene proceeds of crime laws.

Saunders said they wanted to auction the can and send the proceeds to humanitarian causes in Iraq. According to The Australian newspaper, Mr Saunders said the auction could be conducted by a registered charity to raise money for the Mother and Child Hospital in Basra.

He said the can should also be preserved as an important piece of Sydney history.

“We want to give the surplus money that we’ve raised, and anything extra we can make from an auction – not only the paint pot … I think we can raise many many thousands of dollars,” he said. “We’d be happy to come to any reasonable arrangement with the police about how this auction takes place … it’s just mean beyond belief, petty-minded just to destroy it.”

The matter will go before a Sydney court on January 16.

Meanwhile, the world-famous Sydney Opera House is one of 21 international landmarks short-listed to become the new Seven Wonders of the World. The list includes modern landmarks such as Paris’ Eiffel Tower and older candidates like the Colosseum in Rome and China’s Great Wall.

How To Select Earrings For Sensitive &Amp; Pierced Ears}

How to select earrings for sensitive & pierced ears

by

lagod4u

Red, swollen, itchy, oozy, and utterly disgusting. My ear lobes have declared mutiny. I try to quash their inflamed anger with swabs of hydrogen peroxide, but the rebellion continues with increasing strength against surgical steel fishhooks, sterling silver posts, and finally culminates in a victorious standoff against 14k gold-filled leverbacks. Am I condemned to face the world with naked lobes? Must I fall into the ranks of the envious, secretly abhorring every woman whose ear ornaments contribute so vitally to their appearance? Since that fateful day I have been compelled to find answers and sought endlessly for ways to peacefully coexist with the world of pierced earrings. Now I can say with confidence that there is hope. Read on and you too will be able to choose earrings your lobes will love.

The most common cause for a sudden onset of furious lobes is a dermatitis commonly referred to as a nickel allergy or sensitivity. This comes in many degrees of severity ranging from slight itching to alarming weeping and bleeding. A nickel allergy can occur at any time and is, unfortunately, often a chronic life-long condition. In some cases it may be controlled with a regimen of disinfecting the lobes and earrings before and after use with hydrogen peroxide or rubbing alcohol. Sadly enough, many will continue to experience discomfort, finding it is a matter beyond good hygiene. So now what?It seems glaringly obvious. If you have a nickel sensitivity, don’t put nickel in your ears. Yet even armed with this epiphany, choosing earrings is not a simple task. Nickel is a common property in metal alloys, often being present in even seemingly innocuous metals such as sterling silver and gold. Base metals typically have a high nickel content that will leech out through gold and silver plating. It is a good rule of thumb to avoid plated jewelry as the surface layer is extremely thin and will wear down through time exposing your tender ears to increasing amounts of nickel. Even earrings labeled “hypoallergenic” should be approached with caution. While these are indeed hypoallergenic for some, many will find the thin plastic coating inadequate protection from the underlying metal. Also, like platings, the plastic coating will eventually wear off leaving your ears to fend for themselves. Hypoallergenic earrings simply promise to have a lessened likelihood of causing a reaction and by no means should one assume they are nickel free. Now what about surgical stainless steel? The word “surgical” immediately conjures images of an immaculate room full of germ-free doctors and shining tools. Do not allow this association to mislead you. While surgical stainless steel with virtually no nickel does exist, surgical stainless steel jewelry often contains a nickel content of 8% to 12%. It is claimed that the properties of surgical stainless steel bind the nickel so tightly that it cannot emerge and irritate, but this is only true for people with minor to moderate sensitivity. If you would like to attempt wearing surgical stainless steel earrings, be sure that it’s high quality 316L, and not a lesser grade that will likely contain more nickel. So you’ve decided to boycott “cheap” jewelry but have found little respite in switching to silver and gold. This is because pure silver and gold are quite malleable and usually unfit materials for mass-produced jewelry parts. So what you are inserting into your ear is actually a metal alloy, meaning there are other metals present. It is assumed by many that sterling silver will not cause a reaction, as it is typically an alloy of 92.5% silver and 7.5% copper. Unfortunately, there are places that manufacture cheaper sterling products that are weighted down with other metals including nickel. When looking for sterling silver earrings, be sure it bears the “.925” stamp that verifies it’s silver content and also favor sterling silver products produced in the USA, as the likelihood of nickel being present is low. Sometimes you can find earrings made completely of “fine silver”, which has a silver content of 99.9%, and should be safe to wear. Do not be fooled by names such as “German silver” as this is merely a disguise for “nickel silver” which actually contains no silver at all and, clearly, lots of nickel.Gold, like silver, can be a friend or foe. Yellow gold contains nickel, but in decreasing amounts as the karats increase. Depending on your sensitivity level you may be able to wear 24k, 18k, or even 14k yellow gold, but keep in mind that gold is expensive, and an investment will be wasted if you find you are indeed allergic. If you choose to wear white gold, be sure to inquire as to the type of white gold used in the fabrication of the earrings. There are two major types of white gold, nickel white and palladium white. Nickel white continues to dominate the market as it is less costly and easier to work with, but palladium white and new alloys are coming into play as nickel allergies are receiving more recognition. Palladium white gold is virtually allergy free and a good high-end choice for those with severe nickel allergies. Two relatively affordable metals that are progressively emerging onto the jewelry market are niobium and titanium. Niobium jewelry does not contain nickel, and though its natural color is gray, it is easily recognized by the vibrant metallic colors produced through a process called anodization. Niobium does not react with skin and its bold colors are permanent, making it an increasingly common choice for body jewelry. Titanium is also completely free of nickel and an excellent alternative for people suffering from severe nickel allergies. Both titanium and niobium products may be found in select stores and are easily located online through a simple Google search. There are also products created for the purpose of helping people with nickel allergies. One such product that is gaining popularity is Earr’s pierced ear protectors. This consists of plastic sleeves that fit onto your posts or hooks and serve as an effective barrier against threatening alloys. These can be purchased on several websites including aaajewelry.com, which specializes in earring products for people with nickel allergies. Another product you may want to invest in is a nickel test kit offered by allerderm.com. Using this kit will ensure you don’t unwittingly inflame your ears with an earring mistakenly believed to be safe.A final word of advice is to pay attention to the quality of jewelry you are purchasing. Even if you only have a minor nickel allergy, be aware that cheap earrings often have a poorly finished post or hook. A lack of proper filing may leave sharp ends that can scratch the inside of your ear hole, causing a greater chance of infection and inflammation. If you like, you may use a quality emery board to file down sharp ends yourself. Now you know that with careful selection and persistent inquiry, you can find earrings your lobes will accept with pleasure. We dare to hope that the US will soon join Europe and countries such as Japan in strictly limiting the use of nickel in jewelry. Perhaps someday the world will be a nickel free place where our lobes can enjoy their right to wear decorative baubles without fear. Until then, slip some plastic sleeves over your studs and enjoy the fact that advancements in jewelry technology allows even us, the nickel intolerant, to sport beautifully bedecked ears.Jewelry ProductWorld NewsImran Ali
