Gardening Tips: Managing Kids and the Garden

While many kids like to do whatever their parents are doing, the reality is that besides managing the watering can many gardening responsibilities are too much for kids to carry out or just too boring for them. Most adults I know don\’t get pleasure from weeding so it\’s a little much to expect that a child will either. One of the best ways to occupy your children in the garden is to get creative and find ways to turn what could be a mind-numbing afternoon into a fun learning experience.

A wonderful idea is to offer your child their own space in the garden to grow what ever they want to. This tip comes from a friend of mine whose mother allowed her to do this, and she remembers feeling bad for the weeds that were always being thrown away! It didn\’t make sense to her so she started to save them and grow a patch of weeds. Obviously this may not be ideal, but it kept her interest, and she exchanged the weeds for viable produce as she developed. Special projects in the garden can be another fantastic way to keep a child\’s interest. Things like making a tipi from the fallen branches around the yard and then planting a variety of flower like morning glories around the base. I love this one because it comes with a bonus, your child tidies up the yard by gathering branches and then eventually delights at the lovely vines crawling up around the tipi and flowering. Plus your child has a great hideout that gives sun relief once the vines have filled in the walls of the tepee. There will be many hours of play in that delightful tepee while you get work done in the garden. Watering plants is a really fun job for a young person. Using a watering can that is easy to manage is a real bonus for a child. The U can has a handle specially designed for easy handling and pouring. For a youngster, part of the fun of watering is making mud puddles. As long as you don\’t mind the necessary cleanup time a mud puddle spot is great to have in the garden. Here\’s one of my favorites, and it\’s one that will keep your child interested in the garden every day and that\’s growing pumpkins. Have them choose their very own baby pumpkin and then take a sharp knife and score your child\’s name or simple pattern into the pumpkin skin. As the pumpkin matures, the wounds heal leaving behind the special customization which makes for a very special pumpkin come harvest time. Getting your children involved in gardening early on is a great gift to both of you. You get to achieve all your gardening needs while they develop an interest in gardening that will bless them their entire life.
