Rachel Weisz wants Botox ban for actors

Tuesday, July 7, 2009

English actress Rachel Weisz thinks that Botox injections should be banned for all actors.

The 39-year-old actress, best known for her roles in the Mummy movie franchise and for her Academy Award-winning portrayal in The Constant Gardener, feels facial Botox injections leave actors less able to convey emotion and that it harms the acting industry as much as steroids harm athletes.

In an interview with UK’s Harper’s Bazaar, coming out next month, Weisz says, “It should be banned for actors, as steroids are for sportsmen,” she claims. “Acting is all about expression; why would you want to iron out a frown?”

Currently living in New York, she also mentions that English women are much less worried about their physical appearance than in the United States. “I love the way girls in London dress,” she claimed. “It’s so different to the American ‘blow-dry and immaculate grooming’ thing.”

How To Reduce Debt Savings Right Under Your Nose

By Sue Young

Reduce debt, how can you possibly do that? Well one of the keys to reducing debt is to pay it off. Sounds obvious doesn’t it, but in reality this cunning debt reduction technique is hardly used. Now you’re probably thinking – ‘what the heck are you talking about?’ Well let me explain by telling a story, but this time we’ll get an imaginary person to be the poor sap in the story instead of having me – again. So meet Mary, a nice, hard working, average lady with a husband and two children.

Reduce Debt – Reduce Debt – Am I making My Point

So here’s Mary, does she have any debts, yes she does. She has a $2000 credit card with a balance of $1000, she has some other debts but we won’t worry about them right now. Mary is very uncomfortable with the debt she has and would love to reduce that debt as quickly as possible. The payments eat her income and keep her awake with worry at the end of every month. How can she possibly think about reducing her debts with all of this worry going on?

Let’s switch gears here for a moment and take a closer look at one of these debts, Mary’s’ credit card. What is it exactly? Is it money? No it isn’t. Is it cash in Mary’s pocket? No it isn’t. Is it a free loan that Mary never has to pay back? No it isn’t? Are we agreed on all the no’s? If we are agreed, the question remains, what is it?

Redue Debt – Reduce Debt – I’m Trying Again

Well the answer is quite simple. A credit card is a loan that attracts interest (and boy does it do that) and it must be paid back. It lures Mary into spending money that she doesn’t have, the buy now and pay later plan. Mary could avoid the interest on her loan as long as she pays the total outstanding amount each month, but does she. No she doesn’t, it’s way too much for her to afford to pay in one lump – so why the heck did she spend it in the first place?? Because it’s so easy that’s why, and because there are so many shops, and so much pressure to have this, that and the other thing, but that’s another story, this is about Mary reducing her debts by using something right under her nose.

So how has she got into this mess. Is she some kind of obsessive shopper who can’t stop herself? Does she have an alcohol habit she is feeding. No, none of that, she’s just a regular wife and mother doing her best. Unfortunately she has picked up some bad habits along the way and the credit card is one of them.

The fact is, the banks want Mary to use the card, they want her to take it out to the maximum limit and then make the minimum payment, which will be 3-5% of the balance. And they want her to roll the rest over to the next month. That’s how they make their profits, and fair enough, they need to make a profit to stay in business. But Mary needs to be smart and keep herself in profit, not the bank.

But it’s not the interest that I want to focus on, although that can be a considerable saving when trying to reduce debt. There’s a bigger fish to hook here and it’s simply this. Reduce debt by not creating any more. That’s right, stop using that darned card. Those credit cards are not money. Every time Mary gets it out of her purse to use it, she is spending money she doesn’t have. She is living beyond her means, and she is potentially creating a debt that could take her years to pay off. Those purchases of $100 here and there which attract on average 20% interest and are rolled over month after month, and added to month after month, grow and grow. Debt reduction doesn’t even get a look in.

Let’s get back to Mary. She like many of us, has been lured into thinking that she needs a credit card to manage, but she doesn’t. These cards haven’t been around forever and people managed very well without them way back when. I think they used something called ‘cash’. They spent money they had, not money they were going to get. Of course there has always been time payment, but the proliferation of credit cards has exploded the misery of debt world wide. Mary is part of this misery and it’s up to her to stop using her credit card, her store card and any other type of card she might have. Are you listening Mary?

So back to my original point. One of the ways to reduce debt is to pay it off. You bet, by throwing the card away you will stop creating more debt and will actually be able to pay it off. Mary sincerely wants to reduce debt but has internalized the habit of seeing her credit card as a necessity, it is not a necessity. Reducing debt is a necessity.

So to summarize this long tale of Mary and her debt reduction plans, Mary needs to stop using her cards to live on, live within her means, and pay down the outstanding balance as fast as she can. How cunning is that? Give it some thought. Good Luck.

Egyptian treasures found in ancient tomb

Friday, March 13, 2009

A team of archaeologists excavating an Ancient Egyptian tomb have discovered golden jewelry in a recently-discovered lower chamber at the Valley of the Kings burial site in Luxor, Egypt.

Two golden rings and five golden earrings were found in the tomb of Djehuty, an 18th-dynasty official of Queen Hatshepsut, and were probably the property of Djehuty or his family.

The discovery was announced by Farouk Hosni, Egypt’s current Minister of Culture.

Djehuty was overseer of the treasury and overseer of works for the Queen. Hatshepsut reigned approximately 1479–1458 BCE. Djehuty was responsible for managing the huge amounts of precious goods brought in from Egypt’s military expedition to Punt in the Horn of Africa and the vast building projects of Hatshepsut which have made the female pharaoh one of the most-remembered of any from ancient Egypt.

Djehuty died after Hatshepsut did, sometime during the reign of Thutmosis III. Both Hatshepsut’s and Thutmosis’s names are recorded on the tomb. In a fashion typical of ancient Egyptian rivalries, Hatshepsut’s name was partly obscured on the monument over the tomb sometime after the queen’s death.

The team, led by José Manuel Galán of the National Research Center (Consejo Superior de Investigaciones Científicas, CSIC), in Madrid, Spain, had been excavating the tomb, designated TT11 and located in the necropolis of Dra’ Abu el-Naga’, since 2002. While much of Djehuty’s funerary equipment was lost to fire in antiquity, the lower chamber of his tomb was concealed at the end of a three-meter shaft and discovered at the end of 2008.

A superficial description of the tomb itself was recorded almost two hundred years ago by 19th-century French Egyptologist Jean-François Champollion, rubble blocking the entrance hindered excavation until the 21st century. In that time, emphasis in Egyptology has changed from the cataloging of treasures to the investigation of ancient culture, life and religion.

Since excavation began, Djehuty’s tomb has yielded a number of surprises. It was discovered that the tomb was re-used repeatedly up to and during the Greco-Roman period. There is an unusual face-on depiction of pharaoh Thutmosis III hunting ducks, and the mummy of a young, bejewelled, as-yet unidentified woman.

In 2007, 44 preserved bunches of flowers thought to be from Djehuty’s funeral were found in the site. In their 8th season of excavation, which ended on February 22, 2009, the team also found considerable evidence that below Djehuty’s tomb is a network of burial sites from the 11th dynasty, four thousand years old.

The lower chamber also displays passages from the Egyptian funerary text the Book of the Dead on its walls and a colorful mural of the goddess Nut, an embodiment of the heavens, on the ceiling. The names of Djehuty and his parents were also intact in the second chamber; the names were defaced in the previously-known first chamber of the tomb, which had also been looted.

According to a press release from Dr. Zahi Hawass, Secretary General of Egypt’s Supreme Council of Antiquities, Djehuty’s tomb is only the fifth known decorated burial chamber of the 18th dynasty. An additional unusual feature of the tomb is that its upper chamber is decorated in relief, rather than simply paint. When the excavation is completed, Dr Galán’s team plans to open the site to the public as the carved stoneworks will not be destroyed by tourists’ activities as paint would.

The identification of Djehuty is a complicated one, as a number of officials of the 18th dynasty bore the name, including a general and several governors. The name itself is an alternate transliteration of the name of the Egyptian god usually written in English as Thoth.

As the Eurovision entrants return home, the home crowds weigh in

Monday, May 18, 2009

Most of the Eurovision entrants have returned home from their sojourn in Moscow, Russia, and the newspapers across Europe have varied opinions. Most national newspapers congratulated their entrants on a job well done, while others trash-talked other entrants, and still others called for their countries to pull out of the Contest.

Here are some interviews, articles and opinions that made it to the front pages of newspapers and to their sanctioned blogs.

Norway’s mass media was filled with stories revolving around the winner, Alexander Rybak, but a secondary story that received press coverage was outcry against NRK‘s Eurovision commentator, Synnøve Svabø, who was criticized for talking incessantly during the event, making leering comments regarding the contents inside the male entrants’ tight pants, and making a joke about stuffing sweatsocks in her own bra. When asked for a statement by Aftenposten, Svabø said, “I guess people think I should have put the socks in my throat.” NRK did not comment on Svabø’s commentating or whether she will be returning next year.

Sweden’s newspaper Aftonbladet wrote that the “Swede of the evening” was not Sweden’s entrant Malena Ernman, but Malmö-raised Arash Labaf, one of the two singers placing third for Azerbaijan. Markus Larsson wrote, “21st place? Well, this is our second-worst result ever…Malena Ernman fell so far and deep that she almost ended up in Finland. That is to say, almost last.” When asked if she was disappointed, Ernman responded, “No, but I am sorry if the Swedes are disappointed.” She went on to quip, “Europe is simply not ready for my high notes.”

Finland, despite placing last, wrote upbeat stories; Helsingin Sanomat published an interview with Waldo and Karoliina from the Finnish act, Waldo’s People, who announced how happy they were to have participated and will be going right back to work with performances and recordings as soon as they return to Finland.

Most British newspapers in past years published lengthy screeds regarding their bad luck in the Contest and whether they should send an entrant at all. This year all that talk subsided, and newspapers published articles congratulating Jade Ewen on her fifth place ranking. Sir Terry Wogan, former Eurovision commentator for the BBC, said to the Daily Express about this year’s voting overhaul, “I think my protest about the voting was totally vindicated by the changes that were made to the scoring this year. It made a real difference. It was the change that Eurovision needed.” One of the headlines in Monday’s Daily Mail reads: “She did us proud.” Andrew Lloyd Webber, who worked with Ewen, said, “Jade performed brilliantly. After years of disappointing results, the UK can finally hold its head high.”

Spain’s newspaper El Mundo published an article entitled “Soraya’s fiasco,” outlining Soraya Arnelas‘s failure to receive points from 37 of the 41 other voting nations, with the writer remarking, “After a whole year trying to forget [Rodolfo Chikilicuatre, Spain’s “joke entrant” from 2008], Soraya jumped on-stage with strength…Spain’s experiment ended with longing [for] Rodolfo Chikilicuatre.” When asked about her performance and the result, Arnelas said, “I’ll hang on to the experiences I had, the great friends that I made and I’m happy because now I’m known in Europe.”

French newspapers and blogs were muted compared to other countries, but the overall feeling was still very supportive of Patricia Kaas, who placed eighth. In an interview with Le Figaro, Kaas said, “Eighth place, that’s not so bad. It was a great moment for France, we held our head high.” France Soir noted, “[Kaas’s] emotion does not seem to have found a place with competitors that have relied on heavy artillery choreography worthy of those like Shakira, and glamorous outfits, to ensure a place on the podium.”

German newspapers published lengthy stories analyzing why Germany was in the bottom quartile for the third straight year. Die Welt wrote, “The Germans have become accustomed to it: winning the Eurovision Song Contest just does not work [for us]. [Compared] to the total failure of last place with No Angels last year, [this] result is almost a sensational success.” Bild commented, “For years we have had little success. Germany’s placement, despite all efforts, will not be better. Why are we still participating in the Eurovision Song Contest?”

Ireland, who failed to make it to the final, led the cry to pull out of Eurovision. In the Irish Independent, Ian O’Doherty wrote, “Ireland managed something quite rare and rather gratifying last week — we actually managed to produce a Eurovision song that didn’t make you want to rip off your own eyelids so you could stuff them in your ears to stop the horrible sounds…[Sinéad] Mulvey’s elimination is proof of one thing: we need to pull out of this pile of rubbish as soon as possible.”

The Netherlands, another nation that did not make it past the semi-final round, has been very apathetic toward the Contest in recent years, and this year was no different. De Telegraaf conducted an opinion poll of Dutch television viewers, and 90% of them believed the Netherlands should not enter the Contest anymore. Despite the stated apathy, 2.5 million Dutch viewers watched De Toppers compete in the second semi-final, an improvement of 800,000 from last year’s semi-final, where Dutch entrant Hind also failed to advance. De Toppers singer Gordon, in an interview with De Telegraaf, said that the Netherlands should continue to compete: “One time, we will succeed.”

Pakistan’s intelligence agency said to support Taliban

Sunday, June 13, 2010

A report from the London School of Economics claims that the intelligence agency of Pakistan, the Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI), has close ties to the Taliban in Afghanistan.

According to the report, the ISI actively provides the Taliban with services such as funding, weapons, and the training of troops. Additionally, the report, which is based on interviews with members of the Taliban, says that numerous ISI officials are part of the Taliban’s council of war, the Quetta Shura, although some Taliban commanders say that all Quetta Shura members have ties to the ISI. A senior Taliban official said that “[i]t is impossible to be a member of the Quetta shura without membership of the ISI.”

Taliban commanders said that the ISI has specifically provided support to or encouraged strategies such as attacking specific NATO military installations or infrastructure essential to NATO operations such as roads or bridges and assassinating specific individuals, such as high-ranking tribal officials or civilians such as doctors or teachers. The ISI is also alleged to have been the impetus behind the introduction of a type of explosive called a “plastic bomb,” which is undetectable with current NATO detection equipment.

The report said that “[a]s the provider of sanctuary and substantial financial, military and logistical support to the insurgency, the ISI appears to have strong strategic and operational influence—reinforced by coercion. There is thus a strong case that the ISI orchestrates, sustains and shapes the overall insurgent campaign.”

The Pakistani government has denied the claims in the report; a spokesperson said that “[t]he allegations are absolutely baseless.” Another official, referring to an alleged meeting of Pakistani President Asif Ali Zardari with imprisoned Taliban commanders, said that “[t]here’s no such thing as President Zardari meeting Taliban leaders. This never happened.”

There Are Different Types Of Health Insurance Plans For Your Specific Needs

Health, like the weather, can be very unpredictable. You can be at the prime of health one day and then fall sick the next. With rising prices of medication, hospitalization and doctors’ fees, health insurance plans have become an important investment for families and companies. The first step, though, in deciding on a good health insurance plan for you and your family or staff is to understand the different types of health insurance plans available. The following information on the different types of health insurance can help you make the right choice.

Fee-for-service.

Also called Indemnity Insurance, this type of health insurance plan pays for part or all of the fees for medical services such as consultation, check-ups, lab work and hospitalization. The advantage of fee-for-service plans is that you can choose which doctors and hospitals are included in your health insurance plan, as long as they are accredited by the insurance company. You pay for the service and make a claim to get reimbursed for what you spent if that particular medical service is covered in the policy.

Preferred Provider Organizations (PPO).

PPOs are a type of managed care health insurance plans which consolidate different hospitals, doctors and healthcare providers and gets them to give their services to plan holders reduced cost. For a fixed monthly premium, members get to choose their own doctors and hospitals from a pre-approved list and can also get the same coverage (for a higher premium) even if their personal doctors are not on the accredited list. Another advantage of PPOs is that you do not need a referral to be able to consult with a specialist.

Health Maintenance Organizations (HMO).

Health Maintenance Organizations, which are also a type of managed care health insurance plans, provide medical care on a pre-paid basis, where plan holders pay a monthly, annual or bi-monthly fee for healthcare. A primary healthcare doctor is selected from a list, and this doctor is in charge of all your healthcare needs. A referral is needed from your primary doctor before you can see a plan-accredited specialist. HMOs also focus more on preventive healthcare rather than treatment.

Point of Service (PoS).

The point of service health insurance plan combines the characteristics of both a PPO and an HMO. You also select a primary healthcare physician (like an HMO) and he becomes your “point of service.” He can then refer you to other specialists accredited by your health insurance plan. Should you decide to see other doctors not accredited by your PoS plan (like a PPO), you will be required to do all the paperwork and filing of reimbursements with your health insurance company.

Short-term health insurance. This type of health insurance plan is good for those who are in-between jobs or those who are still saving up for a complete plan. Short-term health insurance offers coverage for a limited period, for about 6 months–although some may offer coverage up to a year. This type of insurance was designed to cover for accidents and unforeseen illnesses rather than giving complete medical care or treatment. They also do not cover pre-existing medical conditions.

Parents arrested after putting baby on Craigslist

Sunday, June 1, 2008

A couple from Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada has been arrested on charges of public mischief after listing their seven day old baby girl on the popular Internet classified ads website Craigslist.

The listing claimed that the baby was unexpected, “healthy and very cute”. It asked CAN 10 000 for the baby. It also listed a phone number belonging to a stolen cellphone, which was used to find the couple.

It was first noticed by a 62-year old grandmother browsing the website for furniture, who said “I was shaking, and I thought, ‘Come on, how did this even get through?'” The couple claimed that the listing, which has since been removed, was a hoax.

The father, Jeremy Pete, had a history of car thefts and evasion of police, while the mother, 23-year-old Bethany Granholm, had convictions of property theft, fraud and impersonation. The parents have now been released, but charges are still being considered. The baby has been placed in provincial care.

A suspected copycat incident occurred just four days later, also offering a seven-day-old baby girl for CAN 10 000 on Craigslist. This incident turned out to be a hoax, and no child was in danger.

Last week saw a similar incident in Germany, where a couple listed a seven month old baby on eBay. In this case the police have launched a child trafficking investigation, despite the parents’ assertion that the listing was a joke.

Used Car Dealer Chicago: Getting Your Kind Of Car

byalex

Getting your kind of car from a used car dealer Chicagobranch is easier if you have a friend who can stand by as you select from a long range of makes and models. It would not be a good idea to go out on your own as you need a second opinion when buying a car unless you are already bent on getting that car for yourself several months prior to going back to the dealer’s shop. This may also mean that you have long decided on which unit to purchase.

Used Car Dealer Chicago: Reasons why people sell their cars at used car dealersThere are many reasons why people sell their cars including needing a new one for a growing family. In addition, they may have either traded them or sold them for the purpose of acquiring another one that performs better. However, there are owners who, just for the sake of owning a new one, trade in or sell their cars to go with the trend. Other reasons could be the need for money like raising additional funds in setting up a business or for relocation purposes. Some people may have sold theirs to pay their debts.

Used Car Dealer Chicago: Getting good deals out of used unitsYou may get a better deal once you see a car in good running condition but just needing a little buffing. Painting jobs are costly only if it involves the entire unit. Some may have a broken windshield or have lost a side mirror; these are not major purchases as well. Other dealers may offer you free registration or other freebies such as car covers, seat covers or free insurance. But bear in mind that sometimes, the lesser freebies you get means the better performance the car can offer you.

Used Car Dealer Chicago: Checking for defectsThe thing that you have to look out for is a car that has a totally used up engine or transmission; now, this would cost you a fortune. In this case, you need not rely on this type as it is an impractical option. You can ask a used car dealer Chicago personnel for suggestions. These people know which ones can still perform as a car and which ones need to be towed every time it travels four miles and up. It is then time for you to finally decide which one to buy.

Get yourself the best used car deals at Kingdom Chevy. There are many units on display that can tickle your fancy. Choose from a long range of models and makes at http://www.kingdomchevy.com and ride your dream car.
