Voluntary sterilization of poor women proposed by Louisiana state legislator

Thursday, September 25, 2008

A Louisiana representative has proposed a controversial solution to “generational welfare,” which would pay women on welfare to get sterilization. Republican John LaBruzzo said he thought of the idea because of his constituents’ outrage over paying for welfare.

“You have these people who are just fed up with working their buns off to try to provide for their own family and being forced by the government [to] provide for others’ families who just want to have unlimited kids”, he commented. He is currently working with Baton Rouge to gather data in support of his proposal.

The idea, which LaBruzzo has not finished forming, would award any woman on government assistance a check of $1,000 if she gets a tubal ligation operation. LaBruzzo is also considering rewarding sterilization in poor men and giving tax incentives for higher-income families to have more children.

LaBruzzo, who is pro-life, said that the people “on the other side of the political spectrum are pro-choice. Well, let’s give these people the ability to choose.”

While LaBruzzo has stated that he has received an outpouring of support over his idea, the ACLU spoke out against the proposal and called it a “meanspirited attempt to eliminate the poor.” Planned Parenthood representative Julie Mickelberry called it a “bribery”, suggesting a solution which attacked the root of the problem was needed and that the representative needed to “go back to addressing issues of education about unintended pregnancy and opening healthcare access.”

Oil leaking container ship might cause environmental catastrophe

Sunday, January 21, 2007

In the United Kingdom, an anti-pollution operation is under way after the stricken ship MSC Napoli started to leak dangerous heavy fuel oil.

The heavy fuel oil that is leaking from the beached Italian ship is extremely dangerous for the environment. Fear of pollution increased after the ship was further damaged during storms last Thursday. MSC Napoli was beached by Devon coastguards after it suffered heavy structual damage in the gale force storms of Thursday, 18 January 2007, that wreaked havoc across Northern Europe. The ship, which contains 160 containers of hazardous chemical substances, is listing at 35 degrees.

The entire 26-man crew was rescued by navy helicopters Thursday after severe gales. Cracks were found on both sides of the ship, but the current oil leak was not expected.

Around 2,400 containers were carried by the 62,000 tonne ship, some of which contain potentially dangerous hazardous chemicals.

The Coastguards have reported that up to 200 of the containers carrying materials such as perfume and battery acid are loose from the ship and they are looking for missing containers. South African stainless steel producer Columbus Stainless confirmed on Friday that there was at least 1,000 tonnes of nickel on board MSC Napoli.

A hole in the ship flooded the engine room and there’s now fears that the ship will break up. Saturday MSC Napoli was towed to Portland when a ”structural failure” forced the salvage team to beach it. As the storms have continued MSC Napoli has been further damaged.

The authorities have warned people about the pollution, which already has reached the beaches at Devon, but many want to see it on their own. Police have closed Branscombe Beach as more than 20 containers have broken up scattering their contents along the beach.

Sky News reported Sunday that the costs of the accident might be very high as thousands of pounds worth of BMW motorbikes, car parts, empty oak barrels and perfume might get lost in flooding containers.

The Benefits Of Online Physical Therapy Exercise Software Over Installed Software

By Jay Winburn

WINNIPEG, MANITOBA, CANADA – Although some physical therapy practices find themselves in search of areas in which to cut costs when tough economic times hit, they don’t want to sacrifice treatment quality or customer service in the process.

An area where cost savings and other benefits can be seen that sometimes is overlooked is physical therapy software. Physical therapy clinics who use physical therapy documentation software often use installed software.

But as the Internet becomes more robust, an increasing number of clinics are gravitating toward cloud-based online software, which eliminates the need to maintain expensive computer equipment on-site.

Instead of taking a do-it-yourself approach that requires clinics to account for their software, servers, firewall protection, etc., online software brings all of that to the user as a service.

“We are experiencing an evolution in computing,” says Mike Gauthier, vice president of product development for Prognition Corp., the makers Mavenlive physical therapy exercise software, a cloud-based software solution. “We believe that for those who don’t convert to Internet software, they will incur more expense in the future than those who have the foresight to adopt the model.”

Internet software users can access the latest versions of the software, because updates are made automatically by the software manufacturers, which requires no effort from users. There is no need to download or purchase service packs or upgrades. Internet software also can help save money on sometimes costly IT support services. Installed software is self-limiting, Gauthier says.

Use of that software frequently is restricted to the computer on which it is installed. That means clinicians dont have the ability to work from home on a laptop if they want to catch up on paperwork after work hours. If a modified exercise or program is made on one computer, it may not be able to be accessed from another.

Office networks can be set up to work around some of these setbacks, but that doesn’t always combat all of the negatives associated with installed software, Gauthier says.

The benefits of online software are numerous in terms of exercise software.

“You can use the cheapest computers, notepads and laptops- even smart phones- that you want, because any of these devices are capable of accessing the Internet software,” says Dr. Jay Winburn, president of Prognition Corp., adding that users also can use Macs or PCs without any difficulty.

No installation process is required for using Mavenlive physical therapy exercise software or other online software, and it requires no use of hard drive space. Since online software does not run on a hard drive, users aren’t faced with issues that often occur when installing software.

Online software can be accessed anywhere there is an Internet connection. That makes it possible to catch up on documentation during a lunch hour, a break, or even at home. Another important factor for physical therapy clinics is that of security. Online software can store data securely, as well as provide automatic backups.

Sharing rehabilitation exercises and other data also is easy with online software, Winburn says.

“There just aren’t any monumental setbacks to Internet software that we’ve identified,” he says. “We feel confident that this is the direction all physical therapy practices are headed.”

Haiku Poetry And The Concept Of Wabi/Sabi

By Edward Weiss

It may sound like a tasty sushi dish, but the concept of wabi/sabi is a Japanese idea that literally means “sweet sadness.” It’s a feeling one may have when winter is approaching and you notice the change in nature’s cycles. It’s a feeling of impermanence that surrounds all living things on this planet. Nothing lasts and this idea finds its expression well in haiku poetry. For instance, look at this haiku poem by Bruce Ross;

winter sun…

the pigeons foot crackles

a dry leaf

The first line suggests the time of year and the general ambiance of the day. It is wintertime and as we all know, the sun’s position and relative affect on the earth is quite different during this season. Lines two and three complete the poem and focus, quite remarkably I might add, on the activity of a pigeon. Here, the pigeon happens to walk on a dry leaf and the leaf crackles because of it.

Now, lines 2 and 3 really have no poetic effect by themselves. But, when combined with the sentence fragment “winter sun,” we get what many have called an absolute metaphor.. a snapshot if you will of a moment in time. And it is precisely this moment in time that creates the wabi/sabi affect!

Nothing lasts. Not the winter, not the sun’s position, and surely, not an incident so small as the crackling of a dry leaf. Yet these seemingly small events are what life is about. To catch them is the haiku poet’s job and it is done superbly in this poem. When we read this haiku as a whole, we come away with that sweet sadness that most of us have felt at one time or another. We realize that this life is only temporary and that each “small” act is a miracle in itself.

Wal-Mart owes back taxes, according to State of Wisconsin

Wednesday, August 29, 2007

According to the state of Wisconsin, Wal-Mart has avoided paying millions of dollars in state taxes by paying rent on 87 Wisconsin properties. The Wisconsin State Department of Revenue call this behavior “abusive and distortion of income.”

Wal-Mart is doing this by setting up one subsidiary to run all its stores and setting up another subsidiary to own its real estate. The operating subsidiary then pays the rental cost to the real estate subsidiary and takes a tax deduction for the rent. This money will, however, end up in the corporation’s own pocket.

As a result of Wal-Mart’s actions, the state tax auditors say that Wal-Mart owes more than $17.7 million in back corporate income taxes, interest and penalties from 1998-2000.

The Wal-Mart corporation claims that they are doing nothing wrong, rather they are taking advantage of an overlap of state and federal tax laws in an effort to reduce their taxes and costs.

How A Contractor Installs Awnings In Orland Park

byadmin

Most all people enjoy spending time outdoors, but the sweltering heat of the summer sun can make it challenging to remain comfortable. While building an outdoor structure is an option that can make an outdoor space more pleasant, the cost associated with a project of this nature can be astronomical. Awnings in Orland Park are a great alternative, as they will provide shelter from the sun and rain, and can be installed for a price that won’t break the bank.

Home Preparation

The first step is to prepare the exterior of the home for installation of the support beams that are needed to hold the weight of the awning components. A technician will measure and mark where the support beams need to be located. They will then pre-drill the holes for the bolts that will hold the awning, which will ensure the device is installed in the correct location and that the bolts will be easy to start.

Support Bars And Awning Beams

Once the holes are drilled, the support bars will be secured to the house using the pre-drilled holes as a guide. Most contractors use aluminum bolts as they offer unparalleled strength and will not corrode due to exposure to outdoor elements such as rain. Once the supports are in place, they will then attach the Awnings Orland Park beams, which will serve as the framework for the installation of the awning cover.

Awning Cover Installation

The last step of the job is to place the awning cover over the support bars and beams. Once the Awnings in Orland Park is appropriately lined up, they will then use industrial velcro or plastic zip ties to secure it to the structure. As the awning is tightened onto the frame, it will begin to stretch, which will release any wrinkles that may have formed during shipment.

An awning allows anyone to enjoy the outdoors comfortably, and their affordability makes them a budget-friendly way to enhance an exterior area. The team at A Better Door & Window offers custom awning sales, installation, and repair services. Browse website to learn more about the full selection of awning products available and take the first step in making the most of any exterior living space.
