Explosion, fire on guided missile cruiser USS Leyte Gulf injures five

Saturday, September 15, 2007

Five civilian contractors have been injured after an explosion and fire onboard the Ticonderoga-class guided missile cruiser USS Leyte Gulf at 9:25 a.m. today.

A large explosion erupted from the ship’s berthing area where welding work was being conducted during a stop in Norfolk, Virginia. A fire broke out two decks below main deck, but was quickly extinguished. The injured were taken to Norfolk General Hospital for treatment to injuries not believed to be life-threatening, according to John Kowalczyk, a spokesman for BAE Systems Ship Repair, who were conducting the work.

He added that the fire appeared to be an isolated incident. The ship has been laid up for repairs and modernizing since May.

City of Calgary, Canada removes fluoride from drinking water

Thursday, February 10, 2011

Calgary city council voted 10 to 3 on Wednesday to stop fluoridating their water supply. This overturns a previous plebiscite from 1989 to add the fluoride in an attempt to reduce tooth decay.

Opponents of water fluoridation claim that there could be unknown health effects of fluoride, and question its effectiveness in preventing tooth decay. They also claim that individuals should be able to decide for themselves whether or not to use fluoride. However, Alberta Health Services maintains that current evidence shows that fluoride is both safe, and beneficial to dental health.

It is estimated that no longer fluoridating the water supply could save Calgary’s city council C$750 thousand (550 thousand) annually, as well as cutting a C$6 million (4.3 million) upgrade to the fluoridation system.

Top 5 Fashion Must Haves For Spring/Summer 2009 A Recessionistica’s Guide

By Janice Tham

Recession or not, a girl needs decent clothes. What are the must haves this season every woman should own?

There are the very trendy clothes that may no longer be relevant next year. With the economy as it is, you might want to give those a pass.

Treat your wardrobe as an investment. What are the gorgeous pieces that can take you from this season through many Springs and Summers to come?

Dynasty style shoulder pads may be back but rather than buy one of the current heavily padded jackets or tops that would probably be out of fashion this year. If you must have that look, go dig up some old clothes that do have huge shoulder pads. Unpick them and remove them from these clothes and sew them into your existing jackets to get that look. Then when the fad is over, remove the shoulder pads.

Here’s what you should get instead.

1. Mini Dress

One hot trend that will never truly die out is the mini dress. You see that at every collection this year. Dresses are either minis that end mid thigh, or long gowns for the evening. A mini dress need not be slutty. Don’t bare cleavage and plenty of leg at the same time. Flaunt one, cover the other. This season, arms, legs and shoulders are the erogeneous zones. What’s hot? Toga dresses that show off one shoulder, halter dresses and bustier tops that show off both shoulders or the asymetrical dress. You know the new look where the dress has one long sleeve but the neckline slants down beneath the other arm to bare the other shoulder. These are the mini dresses to get this season, which you can still wear for many summers to come.

2. White Dress.

This is a summer staple. White looks great in the hot sun. A white dress makes a woman stand out beautifully, when surrounded by green grass and flowers in the park or the sand and sea at the beach. This season offers a myriad of white dresses, from mini dresses to long gowns. From girlish cotton dresses to the sexy mini dresses, to silky, floaty dresses that make you look ethereal. Pick one that suits your personality.

3. Strappy Shoes

High heel shoes make an amazing difference to the way a woman looks. This season strappy heels abound. Those with straps that wrap around the ankle are absolutely gorgeous. If heels aren’t for you, there are flats with straps that wrap around your ankle too. Consider getting those if you don’t want a Prada fall.

4. Silk Pants

Looks like the pajama pants trend isn’t going to die out. Silky pants are here to stay. Get yourself a pair of silk pants. These should drape your legs. Pick them in a neutral shade. Preferably in a color that matches a silk jacket so that you can wear them to work as well as for play. Silk pants in neutrals like gray, black, nude or white, this season’s colors, go with everything and you can wear them year after year.

5. Halters

Halter dresses and halter tops are the big thing this season. These are seen everywhere. The halter could be with cut in shoulders, fully covered behind, with a bare back or cross straps behind. Either way, show off your arms and shoulders this season by wearing halters. (Get them toned if you must but flaunt them once you can). There are so many gorgeous halters this season so stock up on them because these are timeless.

Beware: Platinum Quality Can Vary In Jewelry}

Beware: Platinum Quality Can Vary in Jewelry

by

Denny Reinke

Platinum has become a popular choice for jewelry due to its strength, durability, and marketing efforts of the platinum industry in recent years. Platinum is three times more expensive than gold. Jewelers aggressively market it because they make three times the profit on every platinum item they sell compared to gold. Platinum is a naturally white, lustrous metal that is long lasting. Sometimes the claims of strength and scratch resistance are overstated. Like all precious metals, platinum will scratch. A platinum scratch is different from white gold because it simply plows the metal instead of removing it.

Traditionally, jewelry manufacturers used platinum alloyed with metals from the platinum group metals (iridium, osmium, palladium, platinum, rhodium, and ruthenium). With the proper mix of these platinum group alloys, platinum becomes one of the hardest metals making it a strong and durable jewelry metal. Platinum will not rust or corrode and the platinum family metals make it hypoallergenic and ideal for persons with sensitive skin.

Federal Trade Commission (FTC) guidelines for platinum jewelry state that only items consisting of 950 part per thousand of pure platinum can be marked stamped PLATINUM or PLAT without more alloy information. From 750-950 Platinum, the platinum group metals must also be indicated. For example, PLAT900IRID for 10% Iridium alloy. Historically, the most common alloys in America were 95% Platinum with 5% Ruthenium or 5% Cobalt and 90% Platinum with 10% Iridium.

There is a misperception that the 950 platinum is better than the 900 platinum. However, pure platinum is very soft and the right alloy mix is what is important. Different alloys and different percentages produce better results for different jewelry purposes. Some alloy mixes work better for casting and some are better for handcrafting like bending the prongs over fragile diamond corners. Many artisans feel that PLAT900IRID is the best general-purpose alloy for diamond rings.

While platinum is best known for its use in jewelry, more than 60% of platinum is used for other industrial purposes such as catalytic converters in autos and pacemakers in the medical field. Because of its rarity and the rapidly increasing demand for this versatile metal, the price has soared in recent years.

The high price of platinum has caused some jewelry manufacturers to start using lower percentages of platinum and to use other alloy metals to lower the cost of the jewelry. Unfortunately, these new alloy mixes are reducing the very qualities that made platinum desirable. The new alloys produce more brittle platinum that is more susceptible to damage.

For example, metal that is stamped 585 Platinum is really only 58.5% pure platinum and 41.5% copper and cobalt with the result that it is more likely to crack, crater, discolor or irritate sensitive skin. Less scrupulous jewelry vendors remove the 585 stamp and complicate the situation, leading consumers to believe the metal is the traditional high quality platinum.

Historically the jewelry shopper did not have to be concerned about the purity of platinum because the alloy metals were in the platinum group the quality was uniform regardless of the particular alloy or percentage used.

Todays jewelry shopper is at potential risk because the lower quality platinum looks the same as the higher quality platinum. While platinum looks similar regardless of the alloy, the weight of lower quality alloy mixes is lower because there is so much less of the dense platinum.

Currently there are no FTC guidelines for the new platinum alloys so it is up to the jeweler or appraiser to help the consumer determine if the platinum is well suited for its intended use. The consumer deserves a warning if sold lower quality platinum since it might not hold stones as well and is more susceptible to damage. However, do not expect the jeweler selling low quality platinum to point out this potential problem. As with any important purchases, it is up to the consumer to be knowledgeable and ask the right questions before making a purchase.

Bumper Sticker Mania

Submitted by: Mark Trumper

Bumper stickers have been around almost as long as cars have it is a popular myth that they adorned the very first car, the Model T Ford, except this is very wrong. The simple reason is that the Model-T didn’t have any bumpers for anything to stick to in the first instance!

Stickers first had a stage with the appearance in 1927 with the Ford Model-A that car did have bumpers, but it took almost 10 years before anyone started thinking of slapping a sticker on them. Urban legend has it that a Kansas City entrepreneur named Forest Gill came up with the notion of a bumper sticker in 1934. Gill had formed a print shop operating from a basement and he was looking at ways to advertise his own business and drum up some innovative products for his business to offer clients.

Stickers took off rapidly after they were introduced, with many of them being fixed to bumpers with wire in order not to spoil the chrome, but also because they were used widely as marketing tools. Milk and beer distributors used the wire bumper plates widely and interchanged them on their carts and delivery vehicles which only need the wire to be untwisted and refixed as needed. Nevertheless, Gill saw that adhesive stickers were a better proposition for distribution to members of the public because once the message was on there, that bumper sticker would usually broadcast the promotional message for the life of the car itself. He was right today, bumper stickers can command hundreds of thousands of dollars from serious collectors, however many of the stickers that command these kinds of prices are already attached to the car they were originally stuck on decades earlier!

Bumper sticker popularity quickly spread to Chicago where they were used extensively by local politicians seeking election. By the time of the Second World War, bumper stickers played a prominent role in distributing propaganda messages and especially in the drive for War Bond sales which were vital to the continuing war effort.

After the war, a golden age of consumerism flourished and this was the age of big cars with long bodies and submarine like fins. Advertisers and marketing men joined with politicians and interest groups across the country in using bumper stickers in what was a very early example of social media campaigns going viral.

The Sixties were a time of upheaval in the country and a lot of creative souls wanted to express themselves, even those who outwardly conformed with suits and jobs instead of long hair and free love. As opinions and the country became increasingly polarized, expressing your own opinion became even more popular and the voices became more strident on subject matter ranging from the Vietnam War (Make Love Not War), religion, milk, music, love, society and sex (Honk if You’re Horny).

Today, it is impossible to hit the road without seeing a plethora of bumper stickers. All have a message and many have deep rooted meaning too, but for the most part there is nothing better for commuters or those on a long road trip, than a funny bumper sticker which brings a wry smile and sometimes simple laughter.

Florida man charged with stealing Wi-Fi

Update since publication

This article mentions that Wi-Fi stands for “Wireless Fidelity”, although this is disputed.

Thursday, July 7, 2005

A Florida man is being charged with 3rd degree felony for logging into a private Wi-Fi (Wireless Fidelity) Internet access point without permission. Benjamin Smith III, 41, is set for a pre-trial hearing this month in the first case of its kind in the United States.

This kind of activity occurs frequently, but often goes undetected by the owners of these wireless access points (WAPs). Unauthorized users range from casual Web browsers, to users sending e-mails, to users involved in pornography or even illegal endeavours.

According to Richard Dinon, owner of the WAP Smith allegedly broke into, Smith was using a laptop in an automobile while parked outside Dinon’s residence.

There are many steps an owner of one of these access points can take to secure them from outside users. Dinon reportedly knew how to take these steps, but had not bothered because his “neighbors are older.”

Photo source for Barack Obama presidential campaign “HOPE” poster discovered

Thursday, January 22, 2009

Netizens have discovered the photograph that was used to create the iconic Barack Obama “HOPE” poster, which became a national symbol during his 2008 presidential campaign in the United States.

Los Angeles, California street artist Shepard Fairey’s poster design is an almost exact match to an Associated Press photo from October 2006 or earlier. Prior reports beginning on January 14, 2009 claimed that the poster was based on a different photo, a shot by Reuters photographer Jim Young from January 2007. However, on January 20, 2009 Flickr user stevesimula and blog commenters identified the Associated Press photo that appears to be a much closer match.

Fairey had revealed that he found the photographic basis for his four-color screen-printed design using Google Image Search, but could not or would not identify which photo he used. News broke of a supposed source only days ago. According to an earlier attempted analysis by Michael Cramer, it was a photo from TIME magazine which was reversed and stretched slightly. That photo was credited to “Jonathan Daniel” of Getty Images, but this turned out to be a misattribution. Reporter James Danziger of The Daily Beast tracked down the actual photographer for the TIME shot, Jim Young, and in his words “solved the biggest photographic mystery of the 2008 election”. Reuters also celebrated their photo as the basis for such a phenomenon as Fairey’s poster, and a print of the photo was sold to the Museum of Fine Arts in Houston. But it took only a few days for internet sleuths to show that, while similar, the Jim Young photo was not the one Fairey used.

The most convincing evidence that a different photo is indeed the one comes from Flickr: stevesimula produced a graphic comparing the two purported sources. The side lighting in the alternative photo creates highlight and shadow areas closely matching those Fairey used in his high-contrast stencil-like image, and the overlaid images line up precisely from Obama’s eyes to the shadow on his collar to his tie. Jim Young’s photo would have required manipulation to simply match the profile of Fairey’s design, even without considering details like the highlights and shadows.

The actual photo came from the Associated Press, as Wikimedians discovered using the “reverse image search engine” TinEye.com. That tip led photographer Tom Gralish of The Philadelphia Inquirer to the original photo through a Google image search for both “Obama” and “associated press”. The original contained IPTC metadata identifying the creator as Mannie Garcia, which Gralish quickly confirmed. The shot came from an April 2006 event where George Clooney, not then-Senator Obama, was the main attraction: Clooney was addressing the National Press Club about his trip to Darfur.

Fairey’s appropriation raises questions of intellectual property, as apparently no attempt was made to secure reproduction rights from the Associated Press. Sales of the image (on posters, clothing, and other paraphernalia) were used to fund the production of more posters in support of the Obama campaign, and raised Fairey’s public image considerably. A large hand-finished collage version was recently acquired by the Smithsonian Institution’s National Portrait Gallery. The purchase price is not known.

Austrian students protest new government’s student fees plan

Monday, January 8, 2007

Vienna —

A crowd of about 250 activists from the Austrian National Union of Students (Österreichische Hochschülerinnen- und Hochschülerschaft, ÖH) as well as the Organisation of Socialist Students of Austria (Verband Sozialistischer StudentInnen Österreichs, VSStÖ) quickly reacted to the announced forming of the new Austrian coalition government by starting a demonstration in front of the University of Vienna, the largest in the country.

Specifically, the demonstration protested against the proposed plan of enabling students to do community service work at a rate of EUR 6 (about USD 7.6) per hour to work off student fees of about EUR 372 (about USD 475,8) per semester. These fees were introduced under the government of chancellor Wolfgang Schüssel, which ruled Austria from 2000 on.

The protest started directly in front of the university buildings on the famous Ringstraße. Protestors blocked the street by sweeping the street, symbolising the work students have to do in order to study. They proceeded to the headquarters of the SPÖ, where they chanted “Who betrayed us? Social Democrats!”, and later to the parliament building. After this, they announced to go to the ÖVP headquarters, when this reporter had to leave the scene.

On October 1, 2006, a new National Assembly was elected. The Social Democrats narrowly won the election, while the ÖVP suffered severe losses and fell to second place. Since then, intense negotiations between the two parties about a coalition have taken place and presumably ended today, when at 13:30 hours, SPÖ leader Alfred Gusenbauer and ÖVP leader Wolfgang Schüssel announced the finishing of negotiations and conciliation of the two parties in a new government, which is to be sworn in by President Heinz Fischer on January 11.

One of the deals struck today between the SPÖ (who called for the complete abolition of the controversial student’s fees during the election campaign) and the ÖVP calls for legislation enabling easier access to and higher scholarships, as well as reforms in the student loan system and, most visibly, a system whereby students will be able to work in organizations providing social and community services. For this work, they will receive EUR 6 per hour. The total fees for one semester amount to EUR 372; this means a student will have to work 62 hours per semester to fully pay the fees.

Piano Lessons On DVD

by

Lauren Paltrow

You do not have to be musically inclined to learn a musical instrument. Anyone can learn to play piano. You just have to learn the right way. For you, that may be learning from a DVD.

Video Piano Lessons

DVD piano lessons are an excellent alternative for you to learn to play the piano. They are especially good for those who can’t afford to pay for expensive private lessons, or those who find lesson books hard to follow. A piano lesson video is the next best thing to having a live instructor.

Before you begin looking for a piano lesson DVD, you should probably consider getting a piano or keyboard. It will be very difficult to practice if you don’t. It usually isn’t a good idea to borrow someone else’s piano or keyboard, unless they allow you to keep it at your home. Otherwise, your practice time will be limited and you are not likely to be able to practice when it is convenient for you. Pianos can be found almost anywhere, even online, so invest the money. Once you can play proficiently, you’ll want your own piano, anyway.

Once you have your instrument, you will need to find a good piano lesson DVD. You will need to choose between chord lessons and note lessons. Many DVD programs are concentrated on only one type of playing, though there are some that feature lessons for both. Many piano students prefer to learn chords first, and take up notes later. The most important thing is to choose what is best for you and your goals.

If you happen to find a DVD set that features a series of lessons, including both note and chord playing, purchase the set. It will give you the most thorough lesson plan possible. You can find these DVDs and DVD sets at reasonable prices, either in a local store or online. You should always compare the features and prices of different DVD piano lessons before you make your purchase. This will help you avoid wasting your money on something that will not help you learn.

If you have a DVD player at home, you are ready to start your lessons as soon as you have the DVD. The lessons included on the DVD will be presented in the order that they should be taken. They are designed as a step-by-step guide to learn most efficiently. If you have trouble with a lesson, repeat it as often as you need to before moving on. This is one of the advantages of piano lessons on DVD, since you will not feel pressured. You can learn at your own pace, as fast or slow as you want.

Once you have your piano, and your video piano lessons, all that’s left to do is practice. You will learn very easily, at your own pace, as long as you choose a program that suits your needs and taste.

Fernando Alonso wins 2010 Singapore Grand Prix

Monday, September 27, 2010

Ferrari driver Fernando Alonso won the FIA 2010 Singapore Grand Prix from pole position owned a day before. This became his second win in Singapore since 2008 and fourth win of the season.

Alonso was closely chased by Sebastian Vettel up to the finish line — both Red Bull’s were not able to catch Ferrari this weekend.

Lewis Hamilton’s McLaren car broke suspension after hitting Vettel’s teammate Mark Webber, racing him for third place. Another McLaren driver Jenson Button rushed to chase Webber after Hamilton found himself out of the race.

Nico Rosberg once again beat his Mercedes team mate, as the seven-time world champion Michael Schumacher finished only on 13th place. Rosberg ended up 5th.

Williams-Cosworth drivers Rubens Barrichello and Nico Hülkenberg clinched [Robert Kubica 7th place for Renault.

Pole Kubica was forced to visit Renault pits from sixth place with a tyre puncture but easily regained all but one lost positions on a set of his new tyres.

Alonso teammate Felipe Massa started from the rear of the starting grid after setting no time in the first qualifying session stopping on the circuit. Massa then done well in the race to come 9th.

Adrian Sutil owned one point for Force India finishing on the 10th place.

Mark Webber now heads the Drivers’ championship with 202 points, 11 points ahead of Fernando Alonso. Constructors’ ?hampionship standings is lead by Red Bull with 383, 24 points ahead of McLaren and 67 ahead of Ferrari. Vettel’s words to his team crew about the current win by Ferrari after he saw the chequered flag were “We will get there, don’t you worry”.
